Man, I should stop staying up so late on the Obsidian forums; it's making me cranky. Obsidian; do whatever you want with xp. I still want exploration xp, but my freaking out about it was just silly.

For what it's worth: My take on the attributes
Namutree replied to war:head's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
Yeah, but the other classes aside from the priest have an inherent need for RES. See, any class can be made into a tank; tanks benefit from RES. Except rangers. I gave healing to RES mostly to make MIG a bit less needed for all the builds. RES is a bit neglected so it made sense to give that stat the greater appeal. -
Another idea is to just make combat xp low and thus not have worry too much about balance. Combine this with the fact that combat xp would have to be disabled for the challenge modes and you could just add it on with little thought really. We should keep in mind that poe has a level cap. Extra xp will not break the game. I approve of this idea clearly.

Of course it doesn't. But it sure encouarages it. No, I don't actually kill everything in sight, but having the abstract incentive there does make me consider the violent solution "superior" to other solutions. The game is basically telling me that killing is good even when there is no other reason for it. In PoE, killing isn't particularly good. The game only gives you an incentive to solve problems. What will you use the xp for though? As far as I'm aware, the only thing leveling up does is make you better at killing things and not being killed. All of the speech options and such are based on your background, previous speech interactions, and stats. If you play in a style that avoids this it shouldn't affect you. If you play in a style that encourages this you should be rewarded for it, even if it's small compared to quests and progressing the story. The current path very strongly encourages avoiding combat which some people don't prefer. Adding in xp for battles shouldn't affect the story if it is properly balanced. Josh has said many times that there will be a lot of MANDATORY combat.

For what it's worth: My take on the attributes
Namutree replied to war:head's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
Giving healing done to other characters to Resolve only helps if healing other characters is something every class might do. Since it probably isn't too likely that your ranger is going to be healing someone, how does this make Resolve any more appealing for a ranger? All it's doing is saying "Mage = Might; Priest = Resolve" rather than "Big spell effects = Might; Big spell durations = Intelligence". You need each attribute to have something that each class might want, not to be specific to a particular class. RES on a ranger is something that really has slipped my mind. I can think of a need for it with the other classes under my tweaks, but not the Ranger... Wait, the Ranger might get an ability to heal his animal familiar. That is a big maybe though; probably won't... Dang, the one class I didn't think about. You got me... -
Give us some form of xp that isn't related to quests. I've seen many people talk about this topic and there are consistent themes; Some people REALLY want combat xp. Some people want quest-only xp. Both sides seem okay with exploration xp. Go with the third choice and make almost everyone happy.

Let's not get pedantic here. I'm merely using it as an alternative catch-all. You're still not being rewarded for exploring no matter what you kill, be it a squirrel or a Gnoll. I was actually trying to be funny. I know it doesn't make a difference. Guess I should have made it more obvious.

"No Bad Builds" a failure in practice?
Namutree replied to SergioCQH's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
Funny, as the PoE lore and the way the system works has more in common with anime than D&D (not that i have a problem with that) PoE system is basicaly Naruto with "soul power" instead of chakra. Comes as a requirement with the philosophy that mundanes like fighters and rogues must be equaly strong with mages You are wrong. In naruto you have the taijutsu (only need stamina, no chakra -- just pure combat skill), others (ninjutsu, genjutsu,...) are all based on chakra. So in reality they are all wizards. Normal people that does not control chakra does not become ninjas. Taijutsu requires chakra just like Ninjutsu. Wait! This isn't an anime board! Oh well... -

My character isn't a lunatic. Not to mention if I even tried to enter the city of Baldurs Gate I'd be attacked on sight by the flaming fist. How many people do you think killed the country side for the scrap of xp the villagers gave you? I guess we'll never know for sure, but I think it's safe to say between 0.001 and 0.0011%. By the way; why do you even care that some people would kill the country side for like, 300 xp or so? For me it was about the atmosphere, but a lot of content was locked out for low level pcs. Need the xp to wander in new areas and survive, and to even get to some. Not that I was even grinding for xp. Xp giving foes were simply around. If I was grinding for xp I probably would be doing mostly quests.

Unlike Obsidian as of now; I'm not out to ruin other people's fun. Keep the quest xp in for those who like them. No skin off my back that people wanna play as a pseudo servant.

You're the one who brought up the Ogre. I never said what was quest xp should now be exploration xp. I merely want some way to get xp while exploring. See, I tend to hate quests. In BG I would just wander around aimlessly for fun enjoying the atmosphere and whatnot. Once in a while enemies would attack me and I of course would slay them to not get killed. Then back to aimlessly wandering I'd go... Good memories. Sometimes I'd get a level up and that was cool. In fact that's how I'd get most of my level ups. See, the reason getting quests put a damper on that is that it gives you direction. Your not exploring anymore; you're traveling. Sure wandering could get me to bump into some npc doofus with some boring mission, but if I do the quest I'm not wandering am I? That's the problem; quests take away all the fun. Now, some may disagree with me. I'm sure many do, but if they just added exploration-xp this issue could be solved for me and those like me without hurting anyone else.

I didn't realize in BG I had to go to town and ask an npc to give me xp. Even if this very fallacious argument had any merit; let me ask you this: What if I don't know which npc the said Ogre head is even related to? Should I run around town talking to every npc hoping to get xp. Also; what if I didn't notice the Ogre head or thought it was worthless? How am I supposed to know it's attached to a quest? I could very well end up leaving the cave being none the wiser. These are issues that would/will come up. Not that that would even be the same.

You don't get XP for exploring in any IE games. Your argument makes no sense. Here's what you'll be doing in Baldur's Gate: You'll walk around in the wilderness and either come upon a quest or a mob. You will then do that quest or kill that mob. It's exactly the same! The enemies are a part of the environment; quests are just tasks. Big difference.

Combat XP Poll - Let's See What We Think Now
Namutree replied to SergioCQH's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
I'm giving Obsidian a week to at least mention that in the future xp won't be quest f**kin' exclusive. After that; I'm done following poe's development. If things don't change I won't even get my digital copy; it'll be a waste of memory. -
And it still will, because you have to explore to find and complete quests. So you're telling me: Since while exploring I'll get a quest; so I can stop exploring, and do the quest. That is the same as leveling while exploring. BS. What I want is the same effect. How it's achieved is a detail. I used exploring in BG to level without doing quests. That's what I want. Xp without a requirement for quests. BG's exploration let you do that. My only issue with the current xp system is that I cannot get xp from exploring without a quest involved. I DON'T LIKE DOING ERRANDS FOR XP!

Hyperbole much? Not in this case. Not being able to get xp without quests makes doing anything else mostly meaningless in terms of the game's primary mechanical function; leveling.

And this, in no way, affects your ability to level. Hyperbole much? A spiritual successor, not a carbon copy. I have already explained to you how it is aesthetically and mechanically the same as the IE games. You are still just defining the IE experience extremely narrowly. The primary benefit according to you. The point, Namutree, is that now you explore to explore. Now you fight to fight. There is absolutely no reason why you should be rewarded for going out of your way to kill a pack of wolves. The main point is that exploration helped you level; that is important in a game about leveling. I don't care about getting xp for killing wolves; I just want to get xp from exploring. If they give me xp for finding dungeons or what not (A product of exploration) that would be fine too. It is nonsense to suggest the fact that one could use exploring to gain levels isn't at least a major element of BG's exploration. BTW: Keeping the exploration from BG wouldn't make poe even close to a "carbon copy" as you fallaciously suggest.

Combat XP Poll - Let's See What We Think Now
Namutree replied to SergioCQH's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
He MAY just be referring to the beta. I hope... That is the currently implemented quest system. Doesn't mean it can't be changed though. Please, Obsidian; let me explore like in BG. That's all I want. To have that epic exploration again... -
BG games used AD&D and this game doesn't use anything similar!! How could the experience be similar if we don't use a retro-clone???? And don't get me started on the lack of dual classing for humans. Or multiclassing for non-humans!!!! You can still go to explore without xp on kills. Fun factor is subjective though. Be it killing stuff, reading the world's flavor texts, dealing with the companions,... so to each his own. Never said we need kill-xp or nothing. We need kill-xp OR exploration-xp. Leveling is at the heart of any rpg; this is not some minor issue. I simply cannot level without doing quests. This fact is game breaking. ALL the IE games let you gain xp without doing quests. This game was pitched as a spiritual successor; not just some RPG Obsidian felt like making. We were promised the epic exploration of BG. Can any one please tell me how such a thing is even possible when the primary benefit of exploring is simply gone.
