  1. 'But it was made for us' -- indeed, people. but also: 'trying to bring back the magic of the old games', 'PoE will be more IE-ish' Some of you want to play a so very similar, enhanced Baldur's Gate ? Then go buy Beamdog's enhanced edition of the games. PoE goal is to bring back to the market a product abandoned by recent gaming trends, all the while integrating this product to modern standards. Enough crying over split milk- if PoE was to be exactly like BG it would fail. We are very forgiving to the games of our childhood, this does not mean they are the Holy Grail of video games. Obsidian respects retro, while enhancing or adding elements that should be there. Giving their ear to our feedback all the while. Anyone who is not pleased with the work that is being done here should think twice.
  2. Then you're seriously doing something wrong, since I don't recall any of these behaviors from me in any IE games, and I am a hoarder. Of course, logically (although I suppose reading this thread, not so) I left 1 gold armors and swords from downed enemies where they belong, the floor. And this was even in BG1 where I had a full inventory of missiles and bullets on my least strength hero. As you might have read, I definitely agree with the stance that OE should not appease the "I want all lootz" crowd, and that will definitely weaken the game, just like all the other games it has done so in the past. Learn from past mistakes, not repeat them! You could have 1 small fight with skeletons in about the mid-game (5-8 skelies) and each one of them had a Comp Longbow, which sold good gold at traders. I was so frustrated by that time that I didn't care and didn't collect the bows-- or most magic arrows/bolts, or chain/splint and later plate mails, or magic daggers/short swords- and the list goes on. Thankfully 99% of the merchants sold crap things and my excess gold need not grow any more than it was. Re-playing I collected stuff for the early part of the games, then I didn't care about collecting anymore. But it worked well b/c trading was of little use anyway. But don't tell me that you could be a hoarder and have no inventory management problems, 'cause that is a flat-out lie. And all of you guys you should stop worrying so much about the inventory-economy issue b/c most likely adventuring will equip you with the best gear for your characters. That is enough discussion on something that is of secondary importance for the game. Of course there are ways to make trading & world economy more interesting, that is up to Obsidian to decide whether it will be something they will focus on. I'm ok either way. *edit*:However be optimistic as they are gonna take after trading routines similar to the Fallout games. So, you can still collect 10-20 long-swords from your vanquished foes, but still selling them will only be a fraction of that cool named weapon/armor you want to buy. No random encounters in PoE also, so you will not have a way to collect infinite amounts of stuff.
  3. Amazing. PoE is gonna be the most visually pleasing of such games so far, also the art has its own identity. You guys surpassed yourselves and more than met our expectations ! Congratulations on a job awesomely done !!
  4. Polina looks like some dead-serious-tough chick ! Typical stuck-up paladin material, 1 dose of psychological issues, obsessed with some higher purpose-- but of course susceptible to soften & open up to the protagonist ! I hope I am wrong 'cause my thoughts on her bore me before even meeting her ..!
  5. He looks too joyful for a barbarian though. Also maybe a bit dumb rather than fishy
  6. From the official wiki(which is unfinished yet): -Abilities http://pillarsofeternity.gamepedia.com/Ability -Talents http://pillarsofeternity.gamepedia.com/Talent -Skills http://pillarsofeternity.gamepedia.com/Skills
  7. Party resources... Nostalgia Like when in pen-and-paper D&D you took note on your Character Sheet how many more provisions you have left to keep travelling. PoE people not only try to bring back the 'magic' of the old games, they are working on making them how they were supposed to. Again, congratz !
  8. Eh.. In games terms he is harder than any other creature you may encounter. Too many attacks which hit all the time for too much damage paired with insane magic resistance, superb saving throws and Armor Class your fighter would beg to have. He can kill a full party within a few rounds.
  9. I need to pay for an account to read that forum. Can't you copy the interesting bits and paste them here? The post opens for me and I can directly read the comments. Follow the link from within the forum I tagged. ... making a product you dislike says nothing about the individuals that made it. No, it's not disliking. Far from it. It's that they betrayed me: Dragon Age 2, Mass Effect 3. They have sold their souls to the enemy and I don't expect anything worth my time anymore coming from BIOWARE, even the so much anticipated DA 3
  10. Replying to those who find D&D spell memorizing out of the ordinary, I can pinpoint you in AD&D 2nd edition PHB (Player's Handbook) where it is explained in detail how & why spell memorizing works like it does. Still, it is obvious they tried to explain something that they wanted to work in that particular game-friendly way. However the explanation is there and makes sense in this 'magical' world. As for PoE spell memorizing, Mages will have a finite number of castings per encounter/rest and can select to cast any spell they know among their list, for as long as they have castings left. On higher levels for the Mage, low-level spells will become at-will powers, able to be cast indefinitely.
  11. Of course, I wouldn't like it if resting in the dungeon defies realistic outcome just as you described. I guess I will have to trust the devs will also pull that one through and decide what is best for each case. *Edit*: Also thanks for the explanation of the Barbarian's power ! I thought what was implied is that they converted Stamina DMG to Health DMG and I was like ... whaaah ??!
  12. Thank you for the links PrimeJunta. -From the wiki: Some characters (e.g. barbarians) have a different formula for converting Stamina damage into Health damage. now why would any sane person DO THAT ??! *edit*: now that i think of it, barbarians are not known for their wisdom
  13. Anyways, if you wanna have a taste of dialogue quality, dispositions & dialogue options check this post: http://forums.obsidian.net/topic/64979-josh-sawyer-talks-about-stealth-mechanics/?hl=stealth -read Josh's posts on the external link our friendly backer provides (note: you will have to scroll through many pages to get to the part about dialogue, but every other post you may read is absolutely delicious !)
  14. The Sorcerer is a FREAK and an insult to the Mage ! Knowledge and handling of magic is the absolute power in a fantasy RP setting. Mages are anything but nerdy. They are respected, feared, admired, frowned upon, viewed with jealousy or even idolized. And if you were addressing Edwin now, you'd have turned into a hamster forced to live in Minsc's pocket for the rest of your few, hairy years !!
  15. Awesome idea PrimeJunta, if anything should have randomized loot, that should be the Mega Dungeon ! Although it may be late now for the devs to develop a healthy tool for loot spawning ..
  16. Weird, that's actually stuff I love, especially for a re-run. Knowing to which shop to go to equip my party with some crutial items, optimizing your character early with that great class-specific item you only get from that one monster, knowing secret places to give yourself a little headstart, stuff like that... So I guess I'll have to disagree with you there. Ohhhhhh c'mon guys !!! You kill Dritzz for the scimitars ..? He should be able to insta-kill the party, as in truth NO BG1 party is able to kill him without exploiting the battle. Anyway, ok, powergamers duuuuuuh, no respect for the least itsy-bitsy part of RP. Not your fault you exist, but it's the game's fault that allows you to act in such manner. *edit*: hopefully PoE will have what it takes not to allow such exploits
  17. Just the thought of it makes me wanna or maybe
  18. Thats good. ill be able to play ironman mode without woring about perma death. The only thing i hope is that every one that plays in expert mode plays also with ironman mode. So they dont do any reloding after every death shananigans. I am not THAT hardcore myself, but reading all expert mode has to offer, like withholding skill checks-dialogue options' effects from the player, this is the way i'll go for my play experience.
  19. Jeez .. This may be the first very thing I read about the game and can't find myself to agree with .. It would sure be nice to eliminate rest exploit from previous IE games, but wouldn't only be natural that rest spots exist even in dungeons ? I mean, every pen-and-paper player party has rested in the occasional ruins every now and then, so even if you see it from that perspective it still makes sense. How are we supposed to explore THE ENDLESS PATHS OF NUAAAAAA ?????!!! AHHHH !!! (replying to my worried -and kind of creepy- self: bit by bit .. or maybe the devs DO add rest spots in dungeons !)
  20. Also, I'm definitely going for expert mode ! I wanna have the frightful feeling of perma-death slightly crawling on my neck
  21. May I pose a worry there ? Do we have any idea how commonly will such places appear in, like, a dungeon ? I mean it can be a bother if your party is not allowed to set camp inside the ruins they explore and has to leave to find some safer outdoor area .. *edit*: typo
  22. I read those very informative posts by Josh which state that there will be potions in the game and that they are emphasizing on the effects being quite powerful. I can assume healing pots will also be present consequently (btw, drinking pots will trigger an animation which can be interrupted). As for replying to topic, I would prefer item swapping is non-existent than it being there and allowing us to exploit it (as in older IE games). *Edit*: forgot to add address of Josh's posts here: http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3593502&userid=17931&perpage=40&pagenumber=5 *2nd Edit*: I'm sorry, the address requires you to subscribe, see the content by accessing this topic: http://forums.obsidian.net/topic/64979-josh-sawyer-talks-about-stealth-mechanics/?hl=stealth
  23. Thank you guys, that helped a lot. -Another question: So.. so far it has not been announced that there are other ways to replenish your Health apart from Resting, right ? So as an effect the party (or maybe your front-liners that are likely to get the most abuse) will *need* to return to a safe spot to recollect their strength right ?
  24. ... or healing -/-/- NO healing ? are you sure, cause I remember I've read some Paladin and/or Cleric talents that can replenish Stamina over time or give a big temp bonus to Stamina But are there talents or magic (pots) that can replenish Health or you get it back only with resting ? Permanent Death -- so, in Expert Mode, losing all your Stamina is just as punishing as losing all your Health ? Wouldn't that render useless the Paladin talent to revive you with a peak of Temp Stamina (which gradually wears off). Does anyone know how the game handles perma-death ?
