The TV and Streaming Thread: Where is Ricky Gervais when you need him???

When rewatching Brisco County, just remember -
You may catch something I missed, and hasn't been articulated on the few English sites I skimmed through. Japan seemed to love it more than the English reviewers I looked at, so maybe there's a cultural piece or historical resonance that I just didn't get.

Well its possible I missed something, but I've yet to hear anyone satisfactorily explain that bit or why it needed to be in the film. Even checking a few sites, none of them seemed to be able to justify that bit within the narrative that I saw.

Well my friends loved it. It has really, really good animation but IMO it has a fairly dim view of humanity, to be honest. No plot spoilers in the next spoiler box, but regarding the film tonally and if you want to avoid that I've put it in tags - All that said, plot element spoiler ahoy (SPOILER ALERT FOR NEXT BOX)... But who knows, a lot of people liked it and found it meaningful, I guess.

Back in 1993, when Wicked City was released by Streamline to US theaters, it was considered pretty groundbreaking. I do know there were at the time some edited versions that existed back in the day (a separate UK edited dub known in some regions as "Monster City") as the content was a little out there for the times. That said, skimming online it seems like its reputation has only went down over the years. I guess once you see more and better anime movies, the novelty of this one wears off. I personally never saw it, but the people who recommended it to me also recommended Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honnêamise, for which I'd still not quite forgiven them.

Don't get me wrong, I understand your argument (ie that people have different scope to their job that may not be understood by colleagues who have the same basic job title or job description). I'd argue that is a problem in not having clarity in job titles and descriptions, more so than a problem whose only cure is to make talking about ones salary a firing offence. I always figured you for more of a Scrooge McDuck in his money vault type!
 -
To be fair, I work for the government (since I work at a state funded school), so my salary (as well as my supervisors and subordinates) is all a matter of public record. But, the opposite can also be true - if the guy earning 7.5k is the boss' friend and never does near the amount of work as the other employees with the same job title, not allowing them to discuss it seems to be a way to hide the fact that the boss' friend is being unfairly compensated. That's why I find mandating a lack of transparency to be a worrying sign - because it is open to abuse.
 -
I'd be very concerned about what any company that forbade conversations about salaries between non-managerial employees might be wanting to hide. Its one thing to forbid a manager from telling their direct reports what each of them make and another to forbid colleagues from discussing their own salaries with each other.

I'm not sure whether to give that the 'laugh' or 'gasp' icon... -
Well, she explodes, but it's an un-gory explosion. I may have glossed over a bit of story as they search the treasure room, but it has an abrupt end. Yeah, that's probably fair. I think in the context of the story, they're all women he's stolen.

TNG: Lower Decks. A good episode. Sito Jaxa we hardly knew ye. I remember the episode pretty well from first run, but had forgotten the character types (mostly remembering snips of scenes and the overall thrust of the plot) so it ws interesting to see how closely the characters here mirror the characters in Lower Decks the animated series, though, which was something I didn't remember. Discovery, Season 2 Episodes 1, 2, 3 So far not awful by my standards (which would mostly be to become boring, but I do keep waiting for the other shoe to drop). I don't find this Pike to be particularly like any Pike that has gone before, but he makes an effective leader character which I guess is good enough for the needs of the story. Characters are suffering from what I like to call "LOST-itis". You know, where things could easily be solved if they actually talked to one another like normal people, but instead they keep secrets for no real reason other than to prolong the plot (the worst of the bunch is Tilly who keeps her secret for...like half an episode and for no real reason). Sadly Stamets is missed a lot in the early episodes; nice to see him come back at the end of Episode 3 as the slightly jerky character we all like. Saru gets a few good lines. Jett Reno was a fun character in the one sequence she was in. Tilly has been wildly all over the place. Some of the other bridge crew get a bit more face time (and names said on screen). Liked the gag about Lorka's ready room. Speaking of Tilly... The Klingon stuff...I kinda don't care. Its nice to see some follow-up on the storyline, but the Klingon based story arcs were the weakest aspect of the first season, and nothing here has changed my mind. Now to the big elephant in the room... -
Space Cobra Episode XIV - "Dai Ma Ō Garutan" aka "The Great Magician, Galtan" aka Cobra is bored in space, and wishes he had a tower of treasure and a bevy of babes. And then, just like magic... "Whoa, the sun's gotten really close!" A bit of a nutty episode, very much a fantasy story with very little of the science fantasy of other episode. Edit: Also noticing a trend in this episode -

Since its Pittsburgh, I'm guessing the name is from the Whiskey Rebellion? Yeah Dodger Stadium still looks like a 60s stadium which wasn't a great era for park design. I gotta confess, though, I like it existing since I think its cool to have a park with history rather than making a new one every few years (even if some of the modern throwback designs look nicer). But then again, if Atlanta had been forced to use its existing park when the Braves came to town, there'd be a magnolia tree in center field (Babe Ruth hit a home run into it in exhibition play, IIRC).
