Viability of not killing opponents?
Fearless_Jedi replied to Mirren's topic in Alpha Protocol: General Discussion
Ok well maybe I overreacted a bit. If you can get an ability that helps you engage multiple enemies then there may be hope yet. Just tell me this: can enemies still fire their weapons while you hit them with CQC? I forget what game it was but I remember that in one game if you didn't disarm an opponent they could continue shooting you even while you where pummeling them. Scenario reimagined: I run into two guys as they round a narrow corridor. I enter multiple beatdown mode and engage both opponents at the same time. They fall down cradling their multiple fractures and I beat the game. What can I say? I feel very strongly about having a disarm ability. In my opinion disarms seem to be essential to CQC in the spy genre. Now maybe I did overreact but you would have to design CQC extra well to make up for the lack of disarms. On the other hand, I have consider the small possibility that disarms could mess with the item drop mechanism they have in place (or some other unforeseen game mechanic). I'll take that bet! You all are witnesses! Obviously if I was trolling I wouldn't admit to overreacting. Still, in my opinion you can't be too obsessed with disarming. Like I already said I feel that it is essential to the genre and not having it seems counter productive when the goal is to give the player a super spy experience in the game. Some of the best games out there became that way because the developers decided to actually read the forums and find out what the community wanted to see in the game. In this area, Obsidian is doing a great job. In my opinion just letting a developer make a game without any sort of feedback from the people who are going to be buying the game is a huge mistake. True it can get annoying if someone fights the developer on everything, but in my defense disarming and CQC implementation are the only issues I've argued about. -
Viability of not killing opponents?
Fearless_Jedi replied to Mirren's topic in Alpha Protocol: General Discussion
It could just be the poor video card in my computer. -
The term spy covers all sorts of different ideas and genres. So lets see: action is essential, guns...or coarse, assassinations, sneaking around, breaking into buildings/safes/computers, meeting strange and very sociopathic characters, saving lives. You see this in many special forces/assassin/law enforcement/spy thrillers. What actually makes it a spy game is the story/settings. As far as we know u play as a secret agent in exotic locals so I'd say it looks like a spy game to me. FYI: Game footage has shown the main character sneaking around plenty of times so the game obviously has plenty of stealth.

Viability of not killing opponents?
Fearless_Jedi replied to Mirren's topic in Alpha Protocol: General Discussion
Well I see no reason to argue the point anymore seeing as a dev confirmed the lack of a disarm ability. I can't wait till I get the chance to run into a couple of guys rounding a corner in some narrow corridor and get my ass handed to me because I can only attack one guy at a time with CQC. Of course ill start pummeling one of them (because its quicker than my handgun) while the other walks around awkwardly while he unloads a few clips of bullets in my backside. Then Ill try to attack that guy and find that less than a few seconds later the other guy I was beating on is no longer stunned and has now proceeded to continue the lead(Pb) raping of my backside. I may luckily find that i now have a takedown for which to use giving me the ability to finish off one opponent. Of coarse right as I turn to finish off the other guy a new screen fades in saying "You failed to prevent the bad guys from destroying the world. What would your mother say? Reload game?". Of coarse this is compared to a similar scenario where I immediately disarm both opponents after running into them. This of coarse betters my odds because they now must face me using only their fists. Since, I decided to put a few extra points in CQC, blocking their attacks and pummeling them till they bleed to death has given me a euphoric feeling reminding me that my 60 dollars didn't go to waste when I bought this game. Hurray, I get to enjoy the end cutscene showing me sailing into the moonlight with who(m) ever I picked as love interests in the game, readying myself for a second playthru. Now I know my whining about it wont get anywhere. However, i prefer to consider this the complaint I'm going to write when scenario 1 occurs and I ask myself why a company that says they were inspired by modern spy movies/shows/video games wouldn't notice how essential it is in CQC to disarm. Bond does it, Bourne does it, and Bauer does it (not to mention that its an essential part of police and military combatives). They must be taking some serious drugs over at Obsidian to miss this one. Seriously though, if Obsidian just admits that they completely blanked on the idea until after their purchased time at the local motion capture studio and they just don't want to spend any more money on the production side then that's fine and at least my sixty bucks will be going to an honest company. But, if this is all because Obsidian just don't wanna do it then I wanna know if they have any idea how many of the hit spy themed action games that came out in the last 5 years didn't have disarms in it. Answer: Not many. After all you just need one animation and a little recoding, something that would take a skilled modder less than a week to do. Now you might not like what I had to say but its not like im asking for a dead to rights level of detail in the disarms. Hell, Hitman Blood Money had the worst disarm animation Ive ever seen but it was good enough for me. In the end its all the little details in a game's gameplay that give it that little extra which separates good/unique games from Mass Effect knockoffs. I personally believe that if your not willing to go that extra mile then you don't deserve to make video games. Don't flame me unless the game does end up having disarms. Then, off coarse, I would be the "bad guy" and I would deserve it. PS: I've got 20 bucks that says at least 2 major game reviewers bust AP for not having disarms. Edit: I'm glad you're passionate, but don't bypass the curseword censor - Matt. -

I have yet to play Oni, however if ammo is unlimited then the need for disarms seems paramount. -

Lets assume you can't sneak up behind every enemy in the game. -

I hate to bring this up again, but CQC would be alot more viable as a nonlethal way of dispatching opponents if we had the ability to disarm them... -
Lets talk about guns
Fearless_Jedi replied to Fearless_Jedi's topic in Alpha Protocol: General Discussion
Totally Agree, except I prefer the USP Tactical or the XD45 to the M1911, still wouldn't mind having it in the game though. -
As far as I know they have yet to definitively answer that question. Undoubtedly I think it will depend on what weapon you are using.

Release date
Fearless_Jedi replied to Cl_Flushentityhero's topic in Alpha Protocol: General Discussion
Then again maybe waiting for ME2 is a bad idea... Why don't they just let us download the game right now and we'll help Obs with the debugging and content creation? I'm all for that! -
Alpha Protocol on GTTV next Friday
Fearless_Jedi replied to funcroc's topic in Alpha Protocol: General Discussion
Dialogue options + the chesthair = lulz When I see this picture I can't help but wonder whether or not he is talking to the guy or the chest hair. I for one think the chest hair is plotting to rid the world of razor blades. The solution: Threaten to pour hot wax on the chest hair and pull it out! (This threat might work if it was the dude and not the hair doing the plotting.) -
why ..... saudi arabia
Fearless_Jedi replied to nawaf alghamdi's topic in Alpha Protocol: General Discussion
I think Obs chose Saudi Arabia because it has that "exotic location" feel to it. Muslims and terrorism could be seen in any number of African countries besides the Middle East but I don't remember hearing about those places in the location list for the game. When you think Africa you don't really get that mysterious feeling like you do when you hear "Arabia". -

Anyone know when Mass Effect 2 is coming out? Maybe Obsidian is gonna wait for ME2s release so they can get sales while everyone is in the Action RPG frame of mind. -
Since questions seem to be getting answered here: Does anyone know which of the four weapon groups sniper rifles fall under? I am assuming Assault Rifles but Obsidian may throw us a curve ball and make it a part of the infiltration or sabotage skill.

AP on Qore today

I noticed a Sniper Rifle in one of the screenshots that played after the Qore footage. Anyone know which of the four weapon classes that it falls under? I'm assuming assault rifles. -
Nobody cares about AP...
Fearless_Jedi replied to lollers's topic in Alpha Protocol: General Discussion
Unfortunately, the current consumer base cares more for MMOs or FPSs. However, it is also fair to note that AP hasn't really been getting that much coverage either. I think that as long as Obsidian makes a good/unique game they will get decent sales. It will just take time to get the attention of the MMO/FPS fanbase. -
Alpha Protocol on GTTV next Friday
Fearless_Jedi replied to funcroc's topic in Alpha Protocol: General Discussion
Yes, much of that horse was personally bludgeoned by myself. What can I say? Its one of those little features that really give me that kick ass super agent feeling. Ever since the first Dead to Rights came out I've been pretty picky about the modern day 3rd person action games I buy. Anyway, my hope is that a dev might pitch the idea at a design meeting or something. As you said, it doesn't hurt to keep mentioning it. You never know. -
Alpha Protocol on GTTV next Friday
Fearless_Jedi replied to funcroc's topic in Alpha Protocol: General Discussion
Just saw the special footage of AP on GTTV. I gotta say AP looks pretty good. However, I did seem to notice one little issue that has the potential to be a deal breaker for me. Around 6:49-6:52 I noticed that while our hero was using CQC on a bad guy, the bad guy was still firing his gun. Anyone else see the potential for issues with this? Even if the motion capture studio is closed and they don't want to shell out the cash for that little extra feature that really gives players that spy action feeling (Bower, Bourne, and Bond have all used disarms BTW) can't they at least make it so that the bad guys don't fire their guns while you punch em? It is bad enough that CQC will be all but useless when encountering multiple enemies (as far as I have seen) but at the very least make it so that the guy you are beating on can't fire his freakin gun! FYI I am a huge proponent of giving players a disarm ability/feature in any action game involving CQC. I mean its only an extra 10 or so motion capture animations (depending on how you want to do it). All you have to do is make your takedown button or the held "attack" button default to a disarm if you do it on an armed enemy. Anyway, thats just my two cents. -
Very funny, yet so very creepy at the same time. Anyway, I remember discussing a few of my concerns about there being no disarms in the game (as far as we know). Here is a link to the thread in which I made my concerns known. Now I didn't get a definite answer about whether or not there will be disarms in the game. It was a little disappointing but the fact that I heard back from a dev at all is astounding so a big thumbs up to the devs who read the boards and respond to our questions. Still I will most likely rent the game if I don't buy it and undoubtedly I will max out my CQC tree so I can get that flying knee. I can imagine that there might be a few timed escape missions where a flying knee will be most useful.

I find your analysis to lack many things especially...heart. I mean the whole idea is that this guy will do anything to save his daughter. Given the situation, plowing through enemies is not only plausible but rather expected. I mean its his daughter after all. By the way, Liam's character did fight one guy in the end who was almost an equal match in skill. How many hand to hand fights did Bourne get into in the first movie where he fought someone of similar skill? Only one! And what happened to the rest of the people Bourne fought...they got owned, even the Treadstone assassin at the farm got owned. Sure maybe it seemed too easy but once you realize that Liam's character is a highly skilled agent whose daughter's life is on the line then you have to understand that Liam's character has alot more riding on this then your normal bad ass would. This legitimizes the whole badass killer on a rampage scenario. The first half hour of the movie was made so that you would empathize with Liam's character and all that he is trying to do to be a father to the daughter he neglected. You see how he has to struggle to remain important in her life when his ex-wife's family gives her everything. No where among this does it say that it is ok to be a government agent and to neglect your kid...quite the opposite. All it shows the viewer is that because of his background he has the ability to come through for his daughter in a way his ex-wife's family can't. And indeed he does come through for her, earning him a little redemption as we see in the end. Pidesco, I don't think you really appreciate the finer points of the story. Rather you made your decision early on that the story doesn't matter in the framework of the movie. Because of that I think you really lost out on what really set this thriller above the Bourne and Bond movies. I mean this movie took a fair amount of time in the beginning to help viewers really empathize with the main character. Can we say so much of the Bourne and Bond movies? I would say no. James Bond was James Bond with all the cliches that accompany him. Jason Bourne was a guy with amnesia who was good at fighting and running. Eventually you got to see alot more of Bourne's character but it was almost too choppy to follow. In Taken you where given a chance to connect with the main character before he started kicking ass. If you think about it, that is actually rather rare. -
Any awesome animations when using Gun feats?
Fearless_Jedi replied to Zoma's topic in Alpha Protocol: General Discussion
Yes you have indeed mentioned both those powers prior. The reasoning behind why I said abilities where "somewhat of a mystery" was because you had only told us about two. The mystery is that we don't know how many there are per weapon class, we don't know any in the rifle and shotgun class, and I don't believe it has been mentioned whether or not the abilities drain a stamina bar of some sort. -

Fearless_Jedi replied to Zoma's topic in Alpha Protocol: General Discussion
From what I understand you will be able to acquire new abilities for each of the 4 different weapon classes (Pistol, SMG, Shotgun, Rifle). As far as what exactly they are/what they do and how they will look is still somewhat of a mystery. I am fairly certain that there wont be anything as extravagant as a gun kata.
