  1. I agree with Baley! Seriously, just so long as the reviewer gives the reasoning behind their marking, then I can determine if I wiegh the merits and flaws similarly, differently, which and why. A naked number is pointless, except to draw sensational attention to the extremes.
  2. ... And quite likely to leave them alone.
  3. Latest issue of The Escapist: ... Once computers and graphics processors are able to mimic reality, watchdog groups will learn that the Grand Theft Auto titles were mere warm ups. They'll be called upon in record numbers to protest video games with more hysterics than ever. Contrary to what they expected, the more accurate and realistic violent video games become, the less entertaining they will be for children. Instead, parents will be in an uproar over Grand Thought Identity, a virtual reality game that will instill teenagers with the ability to think for themselves and make sound, reasoned arguments using the dialectical method. Lawhunter, a game that teaches you the functions of the government (local municipal offices on Easy Level, state senate on Medium, and Congressional Filibustering on Legendary), will break all previously known records despite Madam President Clinton's efforts to make it illegal to create a game documenting any of the legal process on the grounds that giving "anyone" that sort of knowledge poses a security threat - of the mauve level. Yes, once games are truly lifelike, gamers will discover that the only thing worse than 8-bit graphics are 8 trillion-bit graphics, complete with nauseating liquids, disgusting squishy sounds, and truly offensive smells. ...

  6. Game play. (Yes.)
  7. I am a dog person, but I have two cats. I don't like cats as a general rule, because they tend to not understand the master-pet relationship (or rather, they've got it backwards). Having said that, my two cats are not "normal" cats. Very intelligent and exceptionally companionable: they get upset if they cannot monopolise my attention at least every couple of hours. Rocky reminds me of a dog; he even plays tag! He's really good, too: he hides in a different place every time, he watches for you coming to find him, and when he's seeking, he cheats and looks under the obstacles to try and find you. When we got Furry we were renovating (read: gutting) our house; I used to keep her bundled up in my jumper all day (she'd tell me when she wanted to get down for food or bio break). Not normal cats. Doggies are much better as pets because they can kill burglars and you don't get in trouble with the police. :D
  8. Depends if you're roleplaying a post-apocalyptic futurescape where the miserable remains of humanity eke out survival amongst giant, noisy computers, or not ...

  11. ... It's only a matter of time ...
  12. That is all according to the previous press releases: Valve and VU were set to part ways in August as a consequence of the legal battle that Valve recently won. I know EA is a 500 pound gorilla, but I doubt it's a hostile takeover ... Valve justs wants to maximise sales by having a standard distribution vector, as well as their spiffy new shiny Steam.
  13. The intention was to force respondents to give the best answer ... Ah, but more and more games are being designed with more diverse audiences, e.g. Half-Life 2 has closed-caption for hearing-impaired (I turn it on just to see what those Vortigaunts are saying ...), and also helps compensate for the sight-impaired (with audio feedback). True, I don't expect a blind gamer to lead the frag count anytime soon (but maybe later), but gameplay is not totally dependent on graphics, either.
  14. given that i have been a member of the IEEE, receiving the IEEE Spectrum (membership trade rag) for going on a dozen years now, i'd say i have a good insight into what they've been pushing. the new IEC standard is not one of those things, whether they like it or not. they may officially support it, but i don't hear anybody chanting "Mebi, Gibi, Tibi, RAH!"... nobody i know in the industry uses the terms, either. we are ingrained with 1 MB = 1024 kB. "Mega, Giga and Tera RAH!" and yes, b = bit, B = byte. drives me bonkerdoodles (highly technical term) to hear it used otherwise. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> "Bonkerdoodles,"

  18. Yep, read both your posts, just don't see what relevance they are ...
  19. True, I don't mind subjectivity, after all it is almost impossible to remove it; much better to have an honest appraisal of the motives and allegiances of the reviewer so that we may make our own informed judgement. That requires a clear audit trail.
