  1. I have an Antec (Antec p182), that is part of the dilemma The only way you can put a newish card in my current case is by cutting out the middle hdd bay arrangement (because of 1cm of overlap). So I was looking for either shorter cards, larger case or a compromise between the two. Frankly, I would hate having to move all that stuff into a new case. Just thinking of it gives me the shivers. It does look like post GTX4xx/ATI4xxx stuff is getting bigger physically though. Currently checking casings and maybe older cards although I would hate to by "older" products.
  2. The sizes seems about right. Add the 5970 to that list with a staggering 13.36" (same size for Asus and Sapphire 5970 cards)
  3. Yeah, that is sort of the tricky point. I'm currently checking out other casings. I have my eyes on a Thermaltake VA8003BWS which, if the lower HDD bays aren't used, looks quite spacy on the lower, inside. The Antec casing, while being very nice and silent, really does make you appreciate every cm3 you can get
  4. My traitorous card seems to be unable to recover from whatever ailment befell a month or two ago, inflicting all kinds of bsods and crashes on my computer whenever it gets pushed even slightly. Not likely to be a driver problem, since it happens during post too. Temperatures, as far as I've been able to log them with ATI Tray tools seems Ok, around the 50-60 degrees (there always was a slight difference between the two cores) when working. So, I'm currently falling back on using my trusty old ATI Radeon 2400 while looking around for a new card and could use a bit of advice... I had a look at the ATI 5970 cards, but besides being way overpriced down under (prices range from $850 to $1100), they are ridiculously oversized at 34 cm length, which means it wont fit in any mid sized Antec casings (i have the 182). A question for the panel, just out of curiosity, are there anything smaller than server casings that the above card would fit in? The actual question, anything out there that currently gives decent performance, has a water cooling options (most nVidia and ATI cards do) and will fit physically in the empty space left behind by an ATI 4870x2 (which was in itself a very tight fit inside the Antec case)?
  5. Not really. Too far away from my part of the world. It happened once before though, back in 1957
  6. Jagged Alliance 2 handled that somewhat better by being real time when not in contact with enemy forces. When getting a visual on the enemy it switched to tactical combat. That would have been nice on some of those X-Com missions Yeah, but how often did you actually see any of the enemy in X-Com? You shoot one alien and suddenly you're taking fire from all corners of the map, far beyond your visual range. 1) Don't stand out in the open, it attracts enemy fire 2) Enemy is in hiding? Remove his hiding place. Area bombing is your friend. 3) Tanks. Need more tanks. I mostly got ambushed by aliens on night missions. Don't really remember it being a problem during day time. X-Com 3 is still my favourite though. Enemy hiding in residential area? Strategically placed demolition charges does what it says on the tin (i.e. )
  7. Much kudos to you for quitting that

  9. Testimonies of spiritual experiences
  10. See? that wasn't so hard
  11. I forgot which graphics card you have? The Sapphire ATI Radeon 4870X2. I've been very happy with it so far. I sort of hope its one of the other parts acting up.
  12. As I said, I was just being silly and taking your idea that "anything they add to this, it isn't X-Com" literally. TFTD had some weird **** that didn't fit very well with the canon established in the first game, too. Wasn't that sort of the point though, that people cared about the gameplay mechanics, not the cannon?
  13. *Grumble* I feel like kicking my PC. After the initial hassle with defect HDD's, the poorly performing motherboard and the unpleasant experience that was Samsungs socalled "support" when my monitor deceased, I finally thought I should just kick back and enjoy for a couple of years. Now the gfx card seems to be acting up, Emphasis on seems since i don't have a spare pc of similar technology that I can swap components with for testing purposes It displays random pixels and characters during POST and crashes regularly everytime it does anything powerhungry, e.g. running games or using OpenGL accellerated features like previewing in 3D applications. Even when not, I now get a windows error every now and then that the display driver has stopped working but recovered. Could be anythign from powersupply over motherboard to gfx card. yay Yeah, logging the temperature was the first thing i did. Looks all good. Too soon for a new PC dammit (although getting one where I can finally put 24gb ram in would be nice). [/rant]
  14. Uh huh... Your "arabic" needs a little work though. Maybe we all have an inner German? Maybe yoga, hynosis, meditation, traumatic experiences etc. is what takes to bring it out? Maybe we all have the possibility of becoming engineers overnight? One of my favourite classic jokes... The European Commission have just announced an agreement whereby English will be the official language of the EU, rather than German, which was the other possibility. As part of the negotiations, Her Majesty's government conceded that English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a five year phase in plan that would be known as "EuroEnglish". In the first year, "s" will replace the soft "c". Sertainly, this will make the sivil servants jump for joy. The hard "c" will be dropped in favour of the "k". This should klear up konfusion and keyboards kan have 1 less letter. There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year, when the troublesome "ph" will be replaced with the "f". This will make words like "fotograf" 20% shorter. In the third year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be expekted to reach the stage where more komplikated changes are possible. Governments will enkorage the removal of double letters, which have always ben a deterent to akurate speling. Also, al wil agre that the horible mes of the silent "e"s in the language is disgraseful, and they should go away. By the 4th year, peopl wil be reseptiv to steps such as replasing "th" with "z" and "w" with "v". During ze fifz year, ze unesesary "o" kan be dropd from vords kontaining "ou" and similar changes vud of kors be aplid to ozer kombinations of leters. After zis fifz year, ve vil hav a realy sensibl riten styl. Zer vil be no mor trubls or difikultis and evrivun vil find it ezi to understand each ozer ZE DREAM VIL FINALI KUM TRU!
  15. Maybe he can hire you as a guide for a fun night out in Wellington
  16. Doesn't AvP already cover that market segment?
  17. Unfortunately, shooters (and RTS's) also seems to just about the only thing released these days, like 13 a dozen. I don't really get it with X-Com though, because the setting of the first two games is about as bland and generic as you can get. Their selling point is the game mechanics and when you throw those away you have nothing >_ The name seems to be mostly known by the "wargamer" crowd, so I can't imagine that it would be because if brand recognition either.
  18. Epic Fail!
  19. You may find this interesting, visualizing one TRILLION dollars. Ah, you guys just need to have 11 weeks less vacation every year, problem solved. Where do I apply for the job as finance minister?
  20. I don't know of one place that has it all. Queenstown is a nice tourist base. Good eating and nice hotels. More importantly, all the tour operators work out of there. Milford Sound is sort of a must see trip. For temperate rainforests, you might want to go to Kaitoke (a bit outside Wellington) and the volcanic activity, probably Rotorua somewhere on the North Island. That one also has kilometer long caves where visitors can see some parts of. Glaciers... the only one I know of is the Franz Joseph Glacier on the South Island. Climbing and skiing? Beats me. Not really my thing
  21. Depends on your interests. Shopping, Culture, Scenic Vistas?

  24. You guys do realise that, besides the parties directly involved, nobody is likely to know what really happened? Not saying that the posts doesn't make for interesting reading, but the horse can feature in the next Romero movie I don't envy the court that has to untangle the mess.
  25. The only place I've bought games online from before. I've been sticking to buying DRM free games though, so I wouldn't know if such things would lead to any kind of hassle?
