  1. Of course increased gun ownership would lead to increased shootings. But the real indicator would be if the US has a higher violent crime rate than other developed nations. Which is difficult to gauge fully, since different countries often track these statistics differently.
  2. It is rooted very deeply in the history and culture of the country. The 2nd amendment reads "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." This isn't something that is buried in the Constitution, it comes directly after the guarantee of freedom. It is a major ideal that the US was founded on, and it continues to be an important part of the lives of many Americans. edit: the personal protection argument is weak, btw. The odds of you being involved in a situation where you need a gun for protection do not significantly outweigh the odds of you accidentally getting shot. Of course, this would be easier to recognize if the NRA didn't do everything in its power to stop actual research into gun violence.
  3. You also get special treatment from the police depending on your race in the US. http://www.cnn.com/2017/01/13/us/chicago-police-federal-investigation/
  4. Poet cannot answer standardized test questions about her own work This is pretty hilarious, but also a great reason why the majority of teachers hate standardized testing. It's a ridiculous way to assess student learning.
  5. US economy also used to rely on slavery.Just saying. Sure, and that tends to be the drawback of looking at things simply through an economic lens, it doesn't really account for morality or cultural impacts. Although I doubt the people who want to build a wall and deport millions of illegal immigrants are really looking out for the best interests of the immigrants, either. As Ben said, if that were true then the answer would simply be open borders, meaning illegal immigration would no longer exist because it would be legal to cross into the US and work. That may sound extreme, but so was ending slavery, hence the Civil War. I would think there are probably more moderate solutions to this issue. The issue looks like this: Open Borders <-------------------------------------------------------------------->build a wall and deport 10 million There is room in between there to work. You don't have to take the extreme view.
  6. Gamestop is offering like $200 if you trade in your Wii U for the Switch, so that makes it pretty affordable. But my 6-year old is pretty attached to his game library, so I think I'll need to wait a couple years to see if it is worth it.
  7. Crop harvesting is largely seasonal work, so it isn't exactly a great option for employment long term. Typically you get a mix of older generations that tend to move back and forth between countries (when possible, immigration restrictions actually mean they are more likely to stay in the US than risk losing the income), younger generations that may or may not have citizenship, and a lot of families that are basically split between the two countries. I wouldn't call them tool sheds, but many are living in former seasonal worker houses that have been converted for long term. They are typically renting them from the people that own the farms that they work. This is obviously ripe for exploitation, although many of these farmers run smaller operations that do the best they can to provide for the workers while staying competitive in the market. It's just good to remind ourselves that the economy relies on illegal immigration for stability. Building a wall and deporting everyone is not going to fix anything, every economist in the world will tell you that. There are smarter ways to enact immigration reform, of course. I just don't think we will see them under Trump.
  8. There aren't really much in the way of left wing folks on this forum. I mean we have a few Europeans who seem to be fairly liberal, but I get the impression they are really more moderates when compared to the demographics of their country.
  9. Only good way to travel the US is in an RV.
  10. My wife collects penguins too. I may be married to Malc... Although collecting anything once you have kids is a bit of a struggle, since they tend to try and muscle in on it. My bottle cap collection is currently being used as a dance floor for barbies. Granted it is a pretty cool dance floor.
  11. I thought it harped on the unreliable narrator too much. It was not all that entertaining to watch him argue with himself for the last couple episodes. I regret finishing it.
  12. I wouldn't make assumptions about what N. Korea may or may not do.
  13. I was unimpressed by the new 49ers stadium, to be honest. Not sure how much it cost, but I much prefer the SF Giants ballpark and the Shark Tank to that thing. Although it might be different in the rich people areas.
  14. I just played through the Shen's Last Gift DLC, and it was a 3 stage mission where you had to get your squad on elevators (one per turn) while robots continually spawned every turn. It was crazy.
  15. Except they also do the reinforcement thing in many missions, so maybe they just wanted some variety.
  16. Yep, I remember timer missions only being about a quarter of the game, and they were usually short snatch and grab ones that made sense to have a timer for. Of course, I'm also not averse to save scumming if I don't like the way a mission is going. I'll take some casualties to keep things moving, but if a situation just goes sideways I'll replay it differently. That's how I get better.
  17. Said movie is a much better spin on the tale, that is certain.
  18. To be fair, we were in the 8th iteration or so of that thread, so it got locked as much because it had run its course than anything else.
  19. I'd imagine a youtube search for "How conservatives treats blacks" would turn up some messed up stuff too, but I'm afraid to try.
  20. That's a shame, it's my favorite game since Jagged Alliance 2.
  21. Congrats on your healthy bowel movements. I am not sure what the acronym ISP means in relation to a fibrous diet, but it is probably best left as a mystery.
  22. Keeping track of the pluses, minuses, and factoring the amount of decks quickly all while dealing with the incredible distractions a Vegas casino floor throws at you requires tremendous focus. Doing that well enough to get banned from a major casino is impressive. Considering he isn't a professional mathematician, even more so.
  23. So WoD is trying to take away people's guns. That is a bit unexpected. We need tremendous attention and reform on how we handle mental health care in this country. I say it every time these events happen.
  24. Trying to finish season 1 of Mr. Robot. It's a pretty bleak show. Everyone is either super depressed or super repulsive (or both!) It started out ok, but I'm not sure if I want to stick with it. I'm on episode 7.
