Stamina Regeneration POLL (Merge?)
Cubiq replied to Osvir's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
Since neither of us knows whether this is the case, I figure it's best we dropped that subject. Damn, this is exactly why i came to this thread to find out. So it's still unknown whether or not attacks cost stamina? -

Sigh*... i wasn't talking about you specifically. Just because some people insult OP doesn't really make your argument any stronger. "Negative" isn't universally a bad thing. Feel free to point out the false parts. Because this is just a good way of backing the developers in to a corner. If they did the event, they are pretty much forced to make a choice from some of the "contestants" even if they find no one who would actually fit the right character, or they already have a professional to do that better. Why are they forced? Because people will then cry on the forum how obsidian promised them that backers would have voices in the game, and get more bad rep. And for what? Because people just can't be bothered to send their portfolio through email? If they really are good then they have nothing to worry about, amaright? And even if it's the public that votes, instead of developers, i didn't really back the project on the idea that people who aren't developers will get a "direct" choice on what is and what isn't in the game (yes even voices). I backed it because i trust Obsidian knows what it's doing based on filtered feedback. The backer rewards for npc design were warned ahead of time and i accepted that as i paid. This is just random event and i simply don't trust the public. And likewise, if the game turns out bad, it will all be on Obsidian's head. And i think you underestimate the complexity of such an event. Not only do they need to organize the whole thing and even make preparations, they need to get true information off of these random people through the internet and get their copyright permissions or risk getting sued. They would be an extremely easy target especially since they won't actually pay anyone, so they have nothing in their defense. Doing these type of things through the internet is never a good idea. So it's not really "free stuff" versus "half a grand" -

I have no idea what Good Eats is so i can't comment on that, but there's a huge difference of getting a group to shout things on a stadium than getting one guy in a closed room and watch him through a glass window and judge his every word. And what you describe as background noise will mostly likely already be in the game. They can record the background noise as long as they like, since like you say it's not hard to record, and they don't need extra people for that, they can just go outside. The reason it's on short loop in BG2 1/2 is because of drive space. They could obviously record for hours if they wanted to, there's nothing really stopping them other than audio compression. As for orc impressions that's exactly what i'm talking about, yes it's easy to say "What the heck" in to a microphone with your own voice, but do it in a voice of an actual orc? I doubt it. First of all the accent needs to be consistent across the game, so getting everyone organized for things like that already costs money. WoW orcs have the Yoda accent while in Lord of the Ring they had hissing sounds, if i remember correctly (probably not, but you get the point). Second of all it's really easy to spot a forced impressions (because that's where acting actually comes in) and if they do it badly enough, it becomes so transparent, you can sometimes even judge how his original voice would sound like. So i think that saying things like, everyone can do, it is really stretching it. Thirdly, i really don't think there will be a lack of such sounds like grunting and death screams or just random select noises. I'm sure you can send your portfolio to Obsidian if you really want to add your voice (it's not really uncommon to do things like that), but to say that they should promise to put random amateurs in to the game just because they can? I'm completely against it. -

I don't think you do. If you get a random person with no experience to act in front of people they will tense up and you can easily hear it in the voice that it's forced. And the npc mods that were added by amatures are the proof of that. There was "absolutely" none of that in the original BG1 or BG2 series. But you can clearly notice the forced accents in the BG:EE characters that Beamdog added, because those really were awful. Although there was less of it in BG2:EE There is not a single Review of the original game where they mention bad voice acting, you are the only one who think it was. Annoying characters does not equal bad voice acting. Especially if they were intended to be annoying. -

Opposed to what? The strained **** voice acting that came with the npc mods? I'll take the bandit quote any day of the week. -

They would also need to record it at a professional recording studio unless everyone at home has recording equipment of up to 5000 eur. Or everyone will sound like they have clogged noses. If they want some untrained random people they can easily get some of their own friends or family or even other people in the building to help, but i doubt that's how they do things. -
No i'm just asking you what you mean by innovative, and that you give more examples of what you would consider to be innovative because it sounds like the only reason you want it to be different is for the sake that it's different. -The developers already said that you will be able to sneak past or talk your way out of encounters or trash mobs and complete the objectives in different ways, and the small text you complained about is really only the poor resolution of the game that is now blown out on your high rez monitor. -And still i don't get what you wish from a different UI. I think the portraits are important to be there, because that is the only way to identify the characters in the game, since you can only see small 3d models of them. -We will have alchemy to make potions in the game and able to enhance armor and items. Armor will also have durability that you will have to repair. -We don't get a house for the player, but we get a stronghold (epic house?) that we will manage with lots of events that will be tied to it. -Combat we haven't really seen, but you will have a melee engagement system where if you move close to an enemy they will be locked in combat with you and stop moving and if they try to move away they will have a good chance of being hit which makes running for cover like in BG games completely different. And Fighters will be able to engage 3 enemies at once, and prevent them from moving, so i think that's already a pretty big difference. (in my opinion a bad one as i feel it will make combat too static) And some classes will be able to do aoe melee damage, so it should make positioning more important. Also you will have to manage your stamina or risk getting knocked unconscious. And there won't be any kind of healing in the game other than resting. Soooooooo....an example of what you want from it to be different would make it a lot easier to understand.

That's really a bad example, turn based versus real time pause combat, hardly indicates any "moving on" . Temple of Elemental Evil already had this feature. And give an example of how do you believe a UI should look like then. Like modern MMOs have? EDIT on http://www.obsidian.net/ website you can see how people voted on what they imagine what the game should be like Temple of elemental evil was among it so i'm pretty sure people would prefer the real time combat over turn based in this game.

It sounds like you're looking for another cinema console game. Where every interaction is like a movie cutscene. Where melee fights are made of flashing lights and hit combo text is displayed over every hit and inventory is restricted to picking up, using and selling all in 1 button command. This is exactly what the majority of people came here to get away from. First, you can't achieve voiceover and nonstop cutscenes with this type of budget. Secondly the game was intentionally made for readers, mainly for people who prefer books over films. If you don't understand why someone would prefer that, this game REALLY isn't for you. And i think you will be greatly disappointed by Torment as well, as it WILL have a lot of reading, and considering their budget, will also have only partly voiced dialogue.

Ok... so give an example of this "moving on" you are talking about. And how will Torment achieve this, while Eternity didn't

Okey... So i read about the attack mechanics But how will this work versus crowd control? I remember reading that the graze/hit/crit will have some say on things like how long the stun would last if someone got hit by a quivering palm attack. So let's say a confusion spell hits the party. So there is only a 5% chance that the spell will actually miss, and the rest of the categories (graze/hit/crit) only affect the duration of the spell? Or is there another roll on save versus afflictions?

So the barbarian can attack the target's Fortitude rather than Deflection. So what is this Fortitude? Is this going to have the same function as the D&D stats? Mainly versus spells saves and such?

That' really doesn't matter if the extra content is optional. We have already paid for an extra polish (enhance) of the game with the 4milion goal

Indeed, if everyone who voted yes donated 50$ you would still only end up with only 50% of only 1 stretch goal (if we consider it will be 100,000 and not 200,000 like it was at the start of the campaign) Problem is, a lot of people have forgotten they even backed this on kickstarter and are nowhere to be seen. If obsidian wants to have a go at it it they are going to have to get some publicity first.

Update #69: Pillars of Eternity
Cubiq replied to BAdler's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
*lose But I think that having final product specifications is a good thing. Otherwise we could end up with adding more and more stuff infinitely There is nothing in the addons that actually adds to the game. They are things like beta keys, lore of the world, strategy guide, extra copy of the game download, etc- 488 replies

Bg2 was larger than Bg1 in terms of content. However one of the main critics people had was that Bg2 didn't have as many wilderness areas as bg1 did. So when they were talking about the game being between bg2 and bg1, they meant the number of wilderness areas only. I don't think anyone said how big the actual game content will be, however they did say in an interview that they are worried that people are expecting a bg2 size game in terms of content, so it will probably be lower than that.

it's not and that's the whole point, in an interview they already said they are worried that people will compare it to BG2 (which IS huge) in terms of length, which means it will probably be less than that. The extra stretch goal is to try to even it up a bit in size in terms of content (not map areas) I think the delay will probably be about 2-3 months.

I'm thinking that more areas would greatly improve the modding opportunities, since there would be a chance to add more interesting quests in different areas.

I kind of wish they did a really good job with first release, because it's all about initial reaction with gamers. I think that if they polish the game with DLCs later it won't have as good reviews at the start, and that means a lot in gaming industry, since most reviews stay on websites for ever and every new player would see it when checking it out and all they would see is a lower grade. I've been guilty of such act many times. And if it improves the outlook of this types of games, i'm all for it
