Fly United or Else!
I watched Jimmy Kimmel a few days ago he said stock had plummeted to the point where United could have bought all three passengers their own jet instead of kicking them off and the cost would have been the same. I don't think that a settlement will necessarily help United that much though, they may not be able to kiss and make up with a large bag of money, the damage to public perception will still be done.

Point being that it's completely meaningless without doing what it takes. If you remember Iraq, that could mean hundreds of people with free range to go wherever they please.

US attacks on Syria
One of the first things he says is that Syria hasn't got chemical weapons. mmhmm. The process was simply Assad going 'here's what I got, come and get it'. No inspectors no nothing.

US attacks on Syria
mmm. I find it unlikely that a bomb hit a rebel chemical weapons depo by chance. I also find it unlikely that it would all be a hoax designed to get the US more involved, but there is also the fact that chemical weapons are unique in their ability to penetrate to western TV screens. So much so that this negates much of their use on the battlefield, politically they don't seem worth it. My guess, a local commander did it of his own volition. Assad has chemical weapons tucked away for a rainy day, why wouldn't he. He's in a war, is he going to give up weapons. No, he's going to make a show of compliance and that will be enough.

Fly United or Else!
actually, there is. an ordinary english speaker would likely believe a passenger has boarded an airline when they physical step onto the plane. is at least one aviation attorney we spoke to who told us boarding is a process, and a passenger is not considered to have actual boarded until the plane leaves the terminal. law is replete with definitions which do not adhere to simple english meanings. most lawyers we know is gonna be very careful 'bout identifying actual meanings o' overbooked and boarded and whatnot. the problem with unique definitions and simple english readings is a frequent hurdle for Gromnir when attempting to explain Constitutional law to lay folks. folks read their pocket Constitution and become more confused when Gromnir explains what case law has interpreted the Constitution to actual be meaning. "but the tenth amendment says..." *shrug* typical, ambiguities in a contract is decided 'gainst the person who wrote the language in the contract, but is not always the case, and again, for airline travel you got custom and fed law to deal with. HA! Good Fun! Well a document like that should be parsable by the general public, so reasonably there should be definitions whenever ambiguity is an issue. Maybe there are, it's not like I read it. I sometimes wonder if legalese obscurity is a cunning plan to make sure no one but lawyers understand it so they will always be needed for translation.

we would caution 'gainst hiring this guy. am no more an expert on the subject matter than is he, but even we recognize what a shallow reading he gave the contract of carriage. boarding, for example, is a term o' art which seems to have a meaning divorced from simple english. likewise, federal laws is very much a factor when deciding when/how a passenger may be removed from a plane. the internet is a dangerous place. HA! Good Fun! Yeah but this is overbooking, that's covered by the customer-airline contract. The captain can deny anyone for the slimmest safety reason, the cops can have all kinds of cause, but again, this is explicitly a case of overbooking. Once you are on the plane you have boarded. I seriously doubt there is any legalese that would offer a different definition.

Lawyer youtube guy says there is no rule covering the forceful removal of an overbooked passenger, just removal due to 'unruly behavior'. Point being once you are on the plane it's too late to envoke overbooking. That happens at the gate. Who knows maybe that was intended to avoid just this kind of situation.

that's a reason you drive an rv instead o' flying? getting bumped happens .62 for every 10,000 passengers. Gromnir don't drive an rv 'cause roller skating deer, hopped up on ecstasy and listening to air supply tracks from their ipods, tends to throw themselves at our vehicle. *shrug* the situation with united were a bit unique as passengers had already boarded, but for purposes o' the contract o' carriage, airlines got extreme broad discretion insofar as bumping folks. rule o' thumb is airlines can bump you up until the moment the plane has left the terminal. worse, what constitutes "interference with the flight crew" is viewed even more broad, and as soon as the passenger refused to comply with instructions to disembark, force from law enforcement likely became appropriate. regardless, folks is once again learning the wrong lesson from the video. refusing to comply with law enforcement instructions beyond a certain point is all kinda stoopid. how often does we need see video o' folks getting bloody lips or a faceful o' glass or even shot before folks realize it is a bad idea to refuse to comply with police instructions? wanna fight cops? do so in court, with a lawyer to help you. fight cops on a darkened city street, in your car or on a crowded airplane is gonna end up bad for you. fight in court. you might lose in court, but you could win. you will lose on street, in your car or on a plane. HA! Good Fun! ps united stock went up yesterday on an otherwise flat trading day. stock is up considerable for the year as well. Well, the cops don't seem to think so. They uncharacteristically issued a statement that this was not reasonable force and not standard procedure.

Yeah but the cops, or air marshals or whatever were the one's who manhandled him. That's law enforcement ; the government. I bet United are kicking themselves about the cost of all this negative publicity. Overbooking is worth a lot of money, they aren't going to give that up though. Anyway how is it that you can get on a plane and they have the right to kick you off because they made a mistake. They should be forced to give serious compensation in that instance, not just a few hundred bucks.

US attacks on Syria
What about them. This really happened and it's not hard to convince anyone that it shouldn't have. The missile strikes are symbolic though. 'Proportional response' you know, bomber diplomacy, it's what the US is famous for. Minimal risk and... some bombs or missiles which may or may not influence events.

US attacks on Syria
Yeah, just like US intelligence wasn't fooled that Osama bin Laden lived in a Bond villain-esque cave complex in the Tora Bora mountains. Just like US intelligence wasn't fooled Iraq had a WMD program. Do you remember anyone being held accountable for these lies? The US has a long-standing tradition of fabricating "intelligence" on every important occasion of note. The longer this goes on with nobody being punished, the worse it will get. FFS, the standard "evidence" is currently held to is literally "videos by al-Qaida supporters", which is currently accepted without even the slightest hint of critical thinking! What the **** has the world come to? Anyways, what the "US intelligence" knows or not knows is the wrong question, because it doesn't matter if you're not the president. What we are interested in is what the government is trying to hype up. Then they will lie as much as they can, regardless what the intelligence says. They will not try to be impartial. And to their aid they will use the most banal devices, which insults the cognitive ability of even the most casual observer. Really? What do two pictures taken by al-Qaida's propaganda department have to do in a reasoned and impartial UN debate? Or might this be a dumb PR device? Is there anyone in the entire world who does not immediately associate this with Colin Powell, who has become the very embodiment of the political lie? It is clear that what is happening in the above picture has nothing to do with investigating an alleged crime, and everything to do with selling a narrative to the public. It's for the American people. Grandstanding is par for the course. Tradition is tradition after all. It's a performance the real diplomacy is through other channels.

US attacks on Syria
I was wondering about that UN show. It was clearly meant to embarrass the Syrian envoy who was reading texts and ignoring the whole thing. There is tradition for hyperboly when adressing the UN though. The US envoy came off as sortoff a school teacher giving a student a severe dressing down. From that point of view , posturing that is, she came out ok.

It's still got all the same menus, they are just hidden away under a lot of over designed new menus that look kinda IOSy or like they belong on a phone where you can't have more than 4 or 5 entries in the same heading. Most of the things you remember from 7 like the device manager, services.msc and so on can still be called from the search console. Just avoid using the settings app whenever possible.
