It's all about your projected income versus what you actually made. If you get the same monthly wage all the time that's a pretty easy bit of math, if you income changes drastically however.... Fair to say I didn't know what I was doing and had nothing to pay with.

I think it's useful to regard religion as the whole range of practices within it. What to the books themselves mean to anyone without interpretation, not much. The extremists obviously get more press, after all we are at war with them, but there are areas of the world where extremism is the norm.

I'm guessing blowing up a mass relay would require at least one dreadnought, if not an entire fleet, and the Council would never allow such a fleet to enter the Terminus systems since it would trigger an intergalatic war (and that's content saved for ME 5, 6 and 7).
