Methinks this guy knows not the difference between "unbiased" and "uninformed." It only could've been funnier if his dedication to remaining unbiased led him to haphazardly download the Mac or Linux build for his Windows machine, and his entire preview consisted of "You can't even install this game. The installer doesn't work. They can't be getting any testing done. How can they expect the game to release in a month and a half?! FEH, I say! It's a good thing they have unbiased people like me getting to the truth of the matter, u_u..."

Backer Reward Shipment Poll
Lephys replied to BAdler's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
Well, one person doesn't care if the game gets leaked and suffers horrible sales because people are crappy, so, obviously no one should care whether or not the game suffers that fate. Definitely not Obsidian, u_u... Glad we cleared that up! I was so confused before, thinking bad things happening would be bad. Phew! -
Backer Reward Shipment Poll

No extra charge to you. Obsidian stated in the official project Update that they're willing to "eat the shipping costs" for the second shipment. Well, themselves and Paradox, collectively, I suppose. But, the preemptive plan is for them to just pay for it themselves. EDIT: Dangit, Flow! You rendered my post redundant by like 5 seconds! -
Maybe it could just grant you pure DR. Then have firearms deal extra damage against it. Dunno how much work it'd be to have that one case be special, though (as "firearms" is not a damage type). But, it seems like that makes it more unique than just granting varying degrees of Deflection. The DR could at least be restricted to physical attacks (Burn, Freeze, Corrode, etc. would still deal full damage). Oh, and still have it degrade with hits. Maybe it lasts 15 seconds, and gives you 30DR vs. physical damage types, and that goes down by 5 for every hit you take. Just as an example. Adjust numbers as you see fit.

Backer Reward Shipment Poll
Lephys replied to BAdler's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
I asked about this awhile ago. The answer was vague. I suspect they'll just make manual patch files available for download via the backer portal. Yeah, the update about "auto-patching seems kinda DRM-y to us" makes it sound like any form of GOG/Steam-key-free patches are out of the question. But they didn't say "No, there totally won't be any disc-version patches," so I'm still left wondering. EDIT: Ahh, I thought it was mentioned at some time, but I couldn't remember or locate it. -
Update #89: Backer Rewards
Lephys replied to BAdler's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
The solution is clear! Very, very quickly invent QEDs -- Quantumly Entangled Discs -- which you can go ahead and ship to us. Then, when you alter the master disc, all the other discs will change accordingly, and will get the 1.0 version etched into them. So simple! Nah, really, though, for what it's worth, I don't mind waiting. As has been pointed out, anyone who's getting a disc is getting a digital copy, as well. They could just go with a GOG digital copy, if they're someone who was planning on using their disc and giving the digital copy to a friend. Then, they have an installer they can re-use if they need to, for both parties involved, and they still have a fully, legally obtained hard-disc copy to back up their extra use of the "same" digital copy, for anyone super worried about the ethics of that. I agree that shipping early-version discs early is pretty much just all-around cons and not many pros. Personally, I don't mind waiting for all our stuff, but I can see why others would want their physical goods on-time (sans disc). But, back to non-serious mode, how can you really replicate the IE experience when you're not having to put a disc into your tray and hunt down manually-installable patch files online?!- 95 replies

Backer Reward Shipment Poll
Lephys replied to BAdler's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
Firstly, is the disc version going to get its very own patches? Straight from the Obsidian site or something? I mean, whether they're manual install or auto-patch, I don't care. But, are we waiting until the disc version has absolutely no more patches, ever, before getting those? Or are there going to be patches? If there are going to be patches, then I say just ship the discs with as up-to-date a version as you can, with everything else, "on-time," then let us patch them beyond that. If that doesn't work for whatever reason, then I've gone with option #2. Because, as cool as the physical goods are, this whole campaign was about the game. And yeah, I'm not about to use a digital key for myself, then send a disc (that may or may not still need future patching and can't go through Steam like the digital key) to a friend or something. Or just keep it on a shelf somewhere. "Oh, the game's at 1.4 now, but at least I have this 1.0 disc lying aroung, 8D!" I guess I just don't see much reason to worry about the disc at all if it's not going to be easily patchable, separate from a digital key. What's the point in having "extra" digital copies of the game if you have to use one while you wait on your disc? -

Yeah, it seems to pretty much be for lore purposes. Although, with regard to the mental arithmetic that would be required if the currencies actually mattered... that's not entirely true. You could have the game do that for you. Get to a merchant, select your currency type, see equivalent prices in that currency. That way, a merchant in Place A could give you a cheaper price in Place A's currency than in another currency. Which could be interesting if not overly done, i.e. "If I want to buy this sword with rubles, it's eighty-billion rubles, but it's only 7 silver pieces." People complaining about such things are usually just complaining about extents. I mean, HP can be annoying if you have way too much of it, or way too little of it (compared to damage). But, that doesn't mean everyone should be invincible. Getting good deals here and there because you optionally pay attention to which currency is most valuable to a given merchant (if the game actually supports this, and doesn't force you to manually figure it all out with a notepad and paper) can be nice, if it's not too ridiculously significant or too ridiculously subtle. -
O(Obsidian) O (Order) o(of) E(Eternity). And no worries. I wasn't sure if my update was informative enough, but then, I tend to just dump paragraphs on people, so... I figured I'd start simple, heh. There's still stuff in the beta that, if left exactly as-is, I'd be very worried about in the final game. But, most of it's tune-able stuff that I'm confident will get tuned. Not that I think the game will be flawless when it releases, but, I have faith that there's a TON of stuff going on with the status of the entire game that we're not seeing in just our little beta chunk.

I didn't even think about the souls thing. Maybe, instead of "oh, it's just time-lapse healing because regular-speed healing isn't any fun to wait for," people in the lore actually heal up in about 8 hours of rest. That would be kind of interesting, actually. Now, as for an actual explanation, I don't know what we're going to get, really. "Because souls"? The same goes for magic, really. Why can it heal in most games? "Because magic." It's not like you can scientifically explain the reason non-existent magic is able to heal flesh (or not, for that matter). All you can really say is "it can't," and maybe make up something like "because soul power cannot mend flesh."

What if Interrupt were moved to DEX, and Accuracy were brought back to PER? It might be nothing, but it seems a little weird, mechanically, to have the same stat make you better at hitting, AND interrupting (since, the more often you hit, the more often you potentially interrupt).

The magic bedroll is easily explained: The non-magic bedroll that required 2 months' rest and 100 poultices wasn't nearly as fun in early testing. It's kinda like how games don't actually make you wait 6 hours for your party to have waited until nightfall, etc.

Merchant Gold
Lephys replied to Hassat Hunter's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Thing is... these are games, and mechanically, the buying-things option is a gate for item acquisition. So, I really don't see anything wrong with being able to buy some very nice artifacts/items. However, where verisimilitude can be reasonably useful, perhaps, is to have access to those purchases be more than just "Peter the middle-class merchant is selling this legendary artifact." Maybe actually have access to that item be tied to narrative things and decisions you've made. Maybe some master thief bought it, and is selling it via a fence in the criminal underworld? Why? Because he's not gonna go screw with any dragons, so it's worth more to him if changed into money, than as itself. *shrug* But it's difficult. I mean, when they're only average ances, it's easy to ignore them. But fine ones? Those are really something to behold. 6_u -

When I see a statement like that, I become extraordinarily curious as to what you would find only moderately or mildly ugly, or even moderately pleasant-looking. I wonder where that line lies. -

Regarding the "it's not epic enough" sentiments, I definitely think that, while a crazy "epic adventure is occurring!" theme is great in-and-of-itself, it kind of leads to epic overload. Main menu? Epic legend-making music. Traveling around on the world map? Epic legend-making music. Combat? Epic legend-making music. I mean, you've gotta have something that acts as a foundation, a contrast to the dramatic pinnacles of conflict and narrative crescendo. It's kind of like... if you just yelled all the time, how would your yelling a bit louder really signify that you're angry? Whereas, someone who "never" yells, suddenly raising their voice even a bit... that carries a lot of weight. Subtle/atmospheric doesn't = bad, and epic does not = good. So, sure, it's still capable of being bad music, either way. But it's not-being-epicly-dramatic does not inherently make it bad.

I don't think all the numbers (like damage output, etc.) have been tuned and finalized yet. Thus, how the classes all work could be much more balanced than you think, while some wonky numbers here and there are causing the current end result to seem much more skewed.
