Skeletons army animation
Lephys replied to Mazisky's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Do they simply instantaneously appear when the spell is cast? Or is there an actual process/effect? If a process for their summoning is representing, then there's absolutely no reason why a process for their "death" (doesn't mean actual death-death... just RPG "this thing has lost whatever gave it 'life'"-death) should not be represented. Also, are they corporeal? I don't need to know the science behind all of magicdom, but you're either animating matter or you aren't. If you're animating matter, and they just teleport into existence right there on the field of battle, then why don't people use that to simply teleport across the world? Obviously it makes perfect sense that the teleported person would simply disappear instantaneously when the spell's duration ended. So, why not summon armies inside of castle walls? Why is that a thing no one's discovered in the lore of the world, if it's so easy to do with skeletons? Yup. Obvious logic. Anything other than their ambiguous disappearance would just be silly, u_u... -
Paradox Con Livestream

Haha. "Why does Might affect the damage on my pistol?!" . Good times. -
I dunno, though... it'd be kind of nice if instead of "I'm either walking out of here, or I'm just biting my tongue and participating in whatever plan you deem fit, without question," someone would actually tell you how crappy they think your plan to lie to the orphanage is. Then, when you're in the midst of it, they "accidentally" expose the lie. It's not like you wouldn't be forewarned. And, you'd ideally have the opportunity to at least explain your motives, etc. to that companion, so they could at least understand you if not agree wholeheartedly with your decision.

Almost here!
Lephys replied to FrE3kSh0w's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
They actually used that last $400,000 "make a better game" stretch goal money to develop robot arms into which they can load the motion-capture data from each team member's signature gesture, so that the signatures will be legit, but the signing won't take up their time. The robot arms have been dubbed Han****, Mk I. Patent pending... -

Chants for the Chanter - Lack of Sound Effects
Lephys replied to Havelok's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
Hey now... it's the same number of syllables as "unattractive," and it's not as if the meaning isn't clear. "Whoa... What does the prefix 'non' mean?!" There are far worse blunders to be had. -
Recorded playtime in the save files?
Lephys replied to Devard's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
^ Just get one of those little stopwatchy programs that speedrunners use. You can map a button to it, and every time you press that button, it'll stop. So, when you're done playing, you can stop it for the night. Then, when you start again, just start it back up. There should be a program somewhere that'll let you save the time so you can shut your computer down in between play sessions, etc. That seems like a simple enough data value to store. *shrug* -
^ I don't mind that as much, because different creatures have different typical lifespans, but it DOES tend to be a bit heavy-handed in the case of many hundreds of years, and a little silly (in some ways) in the case of immortality. I always wonder when they're immortal, why they aren't the most amazingly skilled people ever. I mean, they're always of superior skill, in general. But, "I was trained by that guy who's been alive commanding troops for the last 1,000 years" seems like it should count for a lot more than "you're probably not going to win in a 1v1 fight."

Smite-y Paladin?
Lephys replied to TrashMan's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
Simply letting everyone have a sort of "favored enemy" choice at character creation might be cool. It could qualify for part of the Background selection. Maybe. But, yeah, fun procs are pretty great. I like it when the possibilities for the proc circumstances are very interesting. Like "whenever you're immobilized, such-and-such happens," or "every time the enemy misses, chance to blind them," etc. Adds a whole 'nother layer to just "when you hit something, one of many things happens." Heck, you can even do it with things like missile-weapon ammo. Some kind of shrapnel arrow/bolt or something, for example. "Chance on hit to strike up to 3 nearby targets with 15% damage." -
Well, it's a very simple 1-100 roll, and your ranges are: Miss 01-15 Graze 16-50 Hit 51-100 Crit 101+ So, you roll 1-100, then you take the difference of Accuracy (attacker's) minus Defense (target's) and add that to the roll. If I'm not mistaken (please someone correct me if this is wrong). The average baseline Deflection, for example, is 50. So, if you've got 65 Accuracy, and you're making a physical attack against an average target, you get 65-50=15, granting your attack roll a +15 for the purposes of determining Attack Resolution. So, now, the lowest you can roll is a 16, so you can no longer miss. If your accuracy had been 100, then 100-50=50, so you'd get +50 to your roll, meaning you'd have a very small chance to graze (I'm pretty sure there's a minimum on Grazing and Hitting, so you can never have such good Accuracy that you're ONLY hitting and critting, and you can never have such poor accuracy that you're ONLY missing and grazing. I think it's a 5% chance? That could've changed...). Now, the reverse is that, if your Accuracy is crap versus their defense (say, 20 Accuracy against a standard 50 Deflection), then -30 is your roll modifier. So, even if you roll 100, your roll actually comes out to 70. So you can't crit. So, that's pretty much all you're looking for... that relationship between your Accuracy and the target's Defense. In general, the higher you go above 50 with Accuracy, the more often you're going to get hits and crits, and the less often you're going to get misses or grazes. And the lower you go below 50, the less often you'll hit well, and the more often you'll miss and graze. You've got 4 different defenses that can be targeted, but they all work the same way. Just, a target can have 20 Will and 90 Deflection, and it's going to be a lot easier to hit them with an attack against Will than one against Deflection (so, some kind of mind spell versus a sword strike, for example). This works this way for all attacks (even effect applications, I'm pretty sure... if your attack inflicts poison, for example, then your physical sword attack targets Deflection, and if that hits, the poison effect rolls its own attack roll against their Fortitude to determine if they get poisoned, and for how long), including spells. After attack resolution, all you really have to worry about is DR (Damage Reduction). There used to be two of these, but now there's only one, and it's just a flat number of damage that goes bye-bye. If you crit someone for 50 damage, but they have 30DR, you deal 20 damage. And there are something like 9 or 10 different damage types, and a target can have a different DR rating against individual ones (kind of like how the 4 defense values can be different). So, someone might have 30DR versus Piercing, but only 10 DR versus Crushing. Or 30 DR versus Burn damage, but only 5DR versus Shock damage. There's a lot of possibilities and factors that can change the ultimate outcome (reduce damage or duration, etc.), but one simple thing happens every time an attack is made: a 1-100 roll happens, and the result of Accuracy - Defense is added to the roll. Then, look at the chart and see where the roll fell. Was it less than 16? It missed. Was it greater than 100? It was a crit. Then, it checks armor, etc, and adjusts the damage accordingly before actually applying it. That's it. Any questions (or corrections)?

Combat Start: Ideas to fix it and Dev polling
Lephys replied to tdphys's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
The "war on pre-buffing" is overly extreme. However, it's little more preposterous than the "OMG, changing the design of buffing at ALL is a horrendous mistake and a huge problem!" sentiments. There would've been nothing wrong with simply having the buffs designed such that stacking 5 of them before initiating combat isn't really actually viable (because of durations, etc.). Basically, it's a different magic system and a different world, so maybe people can't protect themselves from fire and Evil, and raise their AC, block physical damage, and boost their weapon accuracy and speed for a whole day at a time. There's nothing WRONG with that, but it's not "the right way" to do buffing magic, either. -
The box art for this game - am I dreaming?
Lephys replied to Grotesque's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
He never said things or people from Poland are bad. He simply stated that, as it happens, he has never desired a thing or person who happens to be from Poland. Though, how someone can not enjoy and desire polish sausage is beyond me. -
The biggest thing with magic I see is always "Who cares? It's friggin' MAGIC!". But, you kinda have to ask yourself, "why didn't the first mage ever born either stamp out crime by ruling the whole world, or destroy everything and rule as a tyrant?". The answer has to be reasonable limitations to magic, or it doesn't make any sense. That's why I hate "I cast this spell and everyone's heart stops" magic, etc. I hate when the effects of magic are just some ridiculously powerful thing, no matter what. I mean, a fireball is a big fiery explosion, and that's powerful. But, it still obeys the laws of physics, mostly. You can still block it, or mitigate heat damage, etc. But if someone can fly around, teleport, make themselves invincible, and explode people's hearts, I don't really want to experience the story of multiple people like that all contesting one another, especially in a world filled with other people who can't do any of that.

Dunno about that... The new Mortal Kombat game isn't a "spiritual successor" to Mortal Kombat. It's actually a "new generation" Mortal Kombat. Same with any and all reboots, or continuations of game series' like 10+ years later. Starcraft 2 wasn't a "spiritual successor" to Starcraft. Yeah, maybe they're maliciously deceptive people who intentionally made you think you were getting almost an exact replica of one of the IE games with better tech, or maybe you just don't comprehend thresholds of specificity. Next people will start moaning about how the space piglet isn't in the spirit of Boo, simply because it isn't a hamster and doesn't belong to Minsc. *eye roll*

My old school solid UI mock-up for Pillars of Eternity
Lephys replied to Grotesque's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
Speaking of weapon slots... I REALLY wish they just linked items instead of physically storing them. What I mean is, if you want Set 1 to be a Rapier and a Small Shield, and Set 2 to be a Mace and a Small Shield, you have to have two small shields. When, really, you should be able to click "Set 2" and have it decide what needs to be equipped to achieve that combination. In this example, you'd simply put away your Rapier and draw your Mace, the Small Shield conveniently already resting in your other hand's grasp. Annnnnywho, sorry. Side-rant. I like that mockup, ^_^ -
What they could do is, at this point, offer free beta access on any new pre-orders, etc. They could still have their reasons to not do that, though, of course.

That's fine. As long as I get some recreational time in my schedule, I can work on my pundamentals. 6_u Seriously, though, this pundemic has to stop. It's hopping threads now. This is all my fault, 8P On-topic, it's unfortunate, but they can't rightly go all-out for Portuguese if an estimated 70 people (For example -- not saying there are 70 people exactly) are going to play it in that language. People tend to act like the difference between translating it into a given language or not is the difference between dropping a candy wrapper on the ground or putting it into a trash can that's 10 feet away. As if it's just some big lazy or arbitrary choice not to do it. Which isn't the case.

^ Indeed. I understand budget limitations and priorities, but the general attitude about life-breathing details in a game world is pretty horrid. "Nah man! Just MAX DAMAGEZZZZ!!!" Like anything that isn't out of character is just a hindrance to the player, despite the letters "R" and "P" being a part of the genre's very name. There's a big difference between deciding not to put a durability mechanic into the game, and just deciding there's not even any potential merit to such a mechanic ever existing in a game. Drunkenness is half the battle.

Backer Reward Shipment Poll
Lephys replied to BAdler's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
Meh... while more != better, less doesn't really, either. If all fantasy series were 1 book, the world of fantasy novels would get quite old rather swiftly. And yeah, methinks some folk here are thinking the game disc is going to ship earlier with one option than the other... -
It would somewhat trivialize the usage of those defense spells on the Wizard. But other spells can be cast on others. Arcane Veil cannot.
-
Regarding that part of the intro -- in which what's-her-face will go all "screw you" because you decide to wait on Injured-McWoundsman -- it would be nice if that sort of thing would occur, but not in a "this person simply leaves your party forever" capacity. It seems like more of a "I really don't have time to wait on that guy. So... if you're gonna stay here, fine. I'm going on ahead." Then, there could be consequences for that, even if you still meet back up with them (very likely) in the near future. Maybe they've pressed on and get captured by some group in another room by the time you get there. I'd like to see stuff like that, rather than purely "You made me upset, and now I'm just gonna run off and join the circus!" Really, even if they flat-out leave your party forever, it'd be nice if they still had motivations in the world and showed up in various places/quests.

^ Or you could even map it to an extra mouse button (middle click, if you've only got a basic wheel mouse). Even faster and easier.
