  3. AnandTech The board definitely is geared at the enthusiast market ... that cooler is HUGE!
  4. But a math coprocessor would be different than a PPU - or is the reference to parallel that something similar has been done previously?
  5. Really? Do you have a link for that information? I think I will stick with XP - apparently after Vista is released SP3 for XP will be issued. Sort of like the reluctance of people after XP was released to leave 2k (especially as an SP followed). History repeating itself I suspect.
  6. 1. Indeed is more than likely. I think the mainstream adoption will be in new pre-installed OSes. I am definitely not going to consider migrating until SP1. And - if at all possible - this may be the first time in 10 years that another OS (Linux?) may grace a req for a game ... and then the competition is really on! /wishful thinking?
  7. Yeah I saw this article too. I personally feel that what the PhysX anomaly will do will either push mobo/cpu designers to integrate or video cards to add on. The PC is moving, imo, toward tighter integration, not more add-ons. so, my prediction, the PhysX longevity lies in exhibiting enough performance increase that: a) someone buys them out to integrate (a la Voodoo), or; b) one of the big corps takes the ideas an creates their own integrated model. the fact is that, imo, bang for the buck comes with either a better GPU or CPU. The good thing is that this a tech that will push innovation, just not ultimately as a stand alone item ... or so I think
  8. And time it with thelikely Civ 4 expansion - that would be pretty much what got me excited with the Complete Valve relase over Steam (all HL up to HL2 Exp1).
  9. So perhaps that means that Vista is one large corporate attempt to perform a global DNS attack! Seriously though - I do find such reporting problematic. It continues to reinforce the myth that technology is dangerous. But then again, dry by the 'fact' journalism would fail to make money otherwise ... :?
  10. And correct me if I am wrong - but IPv6 is intended more of a commercial conduit, as 4 is felt to be too 'free.' That's my own language, but I hope it conveys some of my understanding in this regard. So in essence, the slowing of 4 would have to do with the fact that more corporate/commercial sites may be transferred to that protocol - is that a reasonable lay-person's description?
  11. CNET Now I've got a rudimentary understanding of how the net operates, but when I read an article like this, I've got admit to being a little confused. Even if both the protocols are capable - 4 & 6 - wouldn't the OS 'know' when to communicate in one or the other? I guess what concerns me more, is the sensationalising that many of the titles' descriptions (from various media outlets). I have a hard enough time with clients who just want the 'bloody thing to work.' This kind of byte grabbing is of no help!

  13. I agree with pixie - thank you - for illustrating that the events of the last day have been on account of a minority of the 'old guard.' That such behaviour is not to be tolerated any longer, I pray indeed, is clear. The intent of this thread - that of being a welcoming place or else experience likely contraction is a fair challenge to all of us. As Darque has articulated, community is only community when we all take responsibility and question behaviour that is not becoming. I hope that the recent Announcement addresses this very real issue with respect. If you - any of YOU - have further questions, challenges and/or concerns, please feel free to use the PM system. With respect, Fionavar
  14. The rationale - that I know is not what you are advocating PPR - that it happens elsewhere, or well 'they do it,' is opting into acquiescing responsibility. Posting here is aprivilege that carries with it responsibility. If one cannot meet that expectation, then there may arise the need to use the tools available to those entrusted to maintain these fora for Obsidian. These fora (in all of their manifestations since BIS) have always walked this fine line with tolerance. Alienating any - though particularly new - members in the fashion that has occurred today is not acceptable. I will leave this discussion for the community to engage in and hopefully something will be added for reference globally soon. If we cannot offer a welcoming space that we have found here, then perhaps it is time for those less-welcoming to find a new - private - home ... /pontificating from the Roost
  15. Thread Pruned. Continuing to post in such a manner will follow with an official warning/mod status.

  17. After speaking with post originator, I thought we could continue the thread with the express understanding that berating/baiting a/o general mistreatment of new members is not going to be tolerated. Any community needs to balance those who are here with the energy of those who come to an established sense of place. So please be kind to one another and I'll just sit on the Roost wasting time ... Note: Thanks to peterpaulrubens for respectfully challenging and engaging in PM with me about this thread.

  19. Well to say that I am disappointed with the members who have contributed to this ... I guess I should reconsider the feeling that we might actually be a welcoming community ... I would like to add that with the arrival of NWN2 coming soon, if this is the manner in which new members are going to be treated, then those who alienate in this manner should be prepared for the fact that there may be ramifications for such unkind behaviour. With disappointment, Fionavar
  20. Okay we seemed to have transitioned from Top 100 Games to Top 100 Barbs (Featuring Grommie & Volourn). So ... thanks for the thread, the input and now let's hold the memories in a moment of silence ... *AotS bound ...

  22. Welcome Mainframeguy, don't mind the denizens and trolls ... they just don't get out of the sandbox any where near often enough ... As for the topic: here's the Zelderex link for those of you who remember that derailment is a not an encouraged manner in which to post ...
  23. Due to many PMs/emails over the course of the last week, I have decided to move the Tech Files to Obsidian.
