  1. That height dimension is crazy, some video cards would probably be that thick by themselves. But it is very wide, which leads me to think it may be a side-by-side arrangement: a mini-ITX board is about 7" each side, a large video card is about 10"x4". So lay them both next to each other and you get the approximate dimensions given.

Side-by-side, how? That doesn't sound like "readily available components." Where would the power supply sit, then, and the hard drive, not to mention an optical disc player. Which should be an option anyway, but there would still have to be room for it. And cooling fans. And heatsinks for the CPU, not that I'm into copper monsters or water cooling, but I know they get pretty tall and Valve is claiming a high degree of customization ... 2.9" is just impossible ... it has to be a misprint of 9.2". But assuming it isn't, the engineering of this case could make it a fantastic piece of kit.

  2. Btw. a lot of interesting matchups this week.

Not super-interesting, but every team in San Diego's division will be on one local channel here ... an AFC West triple-header with Chiefs/Titans early, then Dallas/Denver, and finally Chargers/Raiders as late as I've ever seen a football game, 8:30pm. Tomorrow could be the day to achieve unprecedented inactivity.

  3.

    Steam Machine prototype specs:

    http://steamcommunity.com/groups/steamuniverse#announcements/detail/2145128928746175450

The 300 prototype units will ship with the following components:

    • GPU: some units with NVidia Titan, some GTX780, some GTX760, and some GTX660
    • CPU: some boxes with Intel : i7-4770, some i5-4570, and some i3
    • RAM: 16GB DDR3-1600 (CPU), 3GB DDR5 (GPU)
    • Storage: 1TB/8GB Hybrid SSHD
    • Power Supply: Internal 450w 80Plus Gold
    • Dimensions: approx. 12 x 12.4 x 2.9 in high

It's the dimensions of the enclosure that interest me most. Or I should say, concern me most. I look at those numbers and then look over at my old Xbox 360 and they seem about the same. No mention of a motherboard brand, either. Is there some super secret way to mount a GPU parallel to the mobo. It better come with silent liquid nitrogen cooling, or something. :geek:

If they release a Steam Machine for less than $599, I will have to clean up the aftermath of a purple twinkie sharknado.

  4. Anyone play Madden? I never have, but the next-gen version of 25 is maybe finally wanting me to try a team-sport video game. They say it will individually render every blade of grass at Qualcomm Stadium. Although I hope it doesn't render every single Raiders gorilla pirate in the stands, too. Sorry if I am asking in the wrong thread.

  5. Marie Calenders stuffed shells. Out of the freezer and into the oven. I'm sure it will taste like hell but I don't have time to cook.

The cheese-stuffed pasta shells!!? I just ate that exact thing! Like five minutes ago. Dammit, of course. See, this is what I'm talking about. When I get to be twinners on the internet, it's with frozen dinners, not regular temperament improvement.

  6.

Fielding an angry angry ex, via email. She's angry because I wouldn't go out with her again. I won't go out with her again because she's unpredictable and angry.

The situation would be funny, but I've got a bad feeling about it.

Why did you even answer her mail?

I simply ignore crazy people, saves me a lot of trouble and valuable time.

The need for familiar human contact can sometimes overpower judgment.

  7. I thought this was a fascinating description of the new controller. I didn't know what "haptic feedback" meant until now, which is apparently what this is:

"This sounds weird, but it's almost like rolling two weighted trackballs that are too large to actually fit into the controller," Lambe said as he tried to explain what it's like to have one's thumbs on those two trackpads. "For camera controls, slide one thumb to the right, and you'll feel this ticking, like you're turning a physical control. Flick your thumb quickly, and this imaginary physical thing reacts like something with weight to it—the 'trackball' continues to roll for a bit, eventually coming to a rest. And since it's all controlled through the software, the same trackpad then becomes more like a mouse or a laptop trackpad when you're navigating through menus. Dynamic!"

  8. What would happen if America's Team beat America's Finest City at home? A freedom tornado. A devastating liberty tsunami. A national shortage of apple pie. Please, Dallas, think of the country first, and just let San Diego win.

  9. No one is forcing anyone to buy it, yet everyone seems compelled to comment as if they were. I say it's about damn time we got a new input device, christ, keyboards and mice are like fifty years old. I just hope my spatial awareness is fast enough to keep up with 19 frickin buttons plus double tracking and touch. I'll take on the challenge of playing Project Eternity from deep within a recliner.

  10. I just turned the TV on and there was a show called Flashpoint on which I haven't ever watched, some cop thingy. It had eerily familiar music playing in the backround and then it hit me: It was from Dragon Age Origins soundtrack, I Am The One by Inon Zur.

Now I'm afraid Leliana is going to sing at my face every time I change the channel  :aiee:

In the first episode of Sleepy Hollow, inside the police station, one of the metal clangy doors had exactly the same sound effect as the red metal doors in the pirate outposts in Far Cry 3. I heard the sound and I was like, where's my weapon ...

  11. A colleague shared this on Facebook (Most of the information is new to me as well, so I can't really elaborate on anything.  I only know what's in the slides too)

    http://www.slideshare.net/DICEStudio/battlefield-4-frostbite-3-mantle

Those slides have some very entertaining syntax ... as though translated from an internal DICE Swedish company presentation.

Mantle sounds more like proof-of-concept marketing, but I'm cool with that, and so is my Radeon. It gets old rooting for the underdog, so yeah, give me something more tangible to feel good about my choice of CPU and GPU.

  12. Thank you! Finally! Stupid "smart" devices that aren't. I don't want a smart TV, or a smart blu-ray player. There is no such thing as successfully "recommending" shows. I don't want to talk to a stupid remote. I already have four devices capable of Netflix that I don't even use because it lags like a mad hag. To hell with facebook on my TV, christ. Whew, I feel a little better, thanks.
