  1. First of all, the Project Eternity wiki source for Modes. In a discussion on Xenonauts forums (great game by the way, it's still Early Access but I recommend it to anyone who enjoys tactical turn-based games) I'm discussing an Ironman suggestion and what it means to me. No one agrees with me over there lol, partially because I'm probably intruding on their established community circle regardless... it made me curious to see what people stand on the subject of "Ironman" over here. What is Ironman to you? To me, in fact I didn't really know what Ironman really was up until 7 or 8 months ago. I had seen it but I had stayed away from it, or played it and not fully understanding it. I researched it and got excited about it and now I always play it whenever the option is available. Only 1 Save, Permanent Death, Save File gets deleted and so and so forth. In a sense, in terms of risks, it is the most realistic mode as there is no "turning back" when or if you make a mistake, in a way a la "in real life you can't ever save". To me Ironman means this: - No Auto-Saves (No Checkpoint Saves) - Only Save & Quit (Single Save File) - When you load the game, the Save File is Deleted - Save Scumming = If you Copy the Saved File and put it somewhere safe - Only 1 Life (If you make mistakes you tread on and do the best out of it), Rogue-like-ish - A true incentive for tactical, careful, strategical and slower paced gameplay because of real risks - Arcade-like-ish (Get to the final boss, die, start over from the beginning) What ticks me off about Xenonauts Ironman is, it is not the Ironman I researched or that I have experienced in other games. Death of my units is not permanent because I have a save file from an earlier state. It Auto-Saves after every mission you do, and you can Load the Save file whenever (And when you Load it, it isn't deleted). So Xenonauts is using a sort of "Light Version" of Ironman in my opinion. It is not too much of a big deal really, as I can manually delete save files (alt+tab and save file folder) to get the real Ironman experience I am looking for. The topic makes me curious though: Is this what "Ironman" is today? Auto-Saveman? How will Eternity play on Ironman? Will it Auto-Save every now and then like Xenonauts? Does Save Files get deleted when loading? When can I Save? Could I get more insight into this from anyone of the Devs? I'm also curious what the community thinks about Ironman here. The suggestion is as follows: If Obsidian feels uncomfortable at putting "No Auto-Saves", "Save & Quit" and "Delete Save File Loading" in the game, could it be possible to at least add it as an optional "switch" thing in a text config file? Default values (if Obsidian feels uncomfortable about it, which the Xenonauts developers seem to be): Auto-Saves = 1 Save & Quit = 0 Delete Save when Loading = 0 Ironman values (to me, which would have to be manually adjusted by opening the config file): Auto-Saves = 0 Save & Quit = 1 Delete Save when Loading = 1
  2. ctrl+z works, it undoes the backspace. next time you don't have to redo an entire post Edit: you may have inspired a faction idea. It was a backspace that took me back a browser page and the "Last auto saved" function hadn't saved anything. Does ctrl+z work on that too? ^^
  3. Socks should be its own entire thread! But jokes aside, that's something I've never seen before. Taking socks into consideration when gearing up (Not suggesting it, simply curiously exploring ideas). Is there any RPG out there that does? Sock mechanics: - X% Chance of losing one sock when resting -2 Morale - After X amount of use, socks gets holes and gives -1 Morale due to Irritability
  4. I think I get the picture still. Real life magicians play a lot with the illusion of the eyes and mind. Tricking our perceptions in a similar way. Another easy test that you can do by yourself is to draw a stick figure on the corner of your notebook and then flick through all the pages, and you get an animation frame depending on what you drew. There's also the bird in the cage (a flat and round piece of wood), on one side draw a bird, on the other a cage (I saw it in a movie first, but I've also seen it irl). Get a thread and pull it through, then you're supposed to spin the wood fast and then you'll see a bird in a cage.
  5. Unless there are ways for you to put the rolls more into your favor to avoid it as well as post-battle measures (getting a prosthetic for instance).
  6. I'm still going to make (if that will be possible) a Ring Mister/Mistress Class. Just copy a Grimoire, rename it and re-write the description/conditions/triggers. Change some artwork. Same thing with some spell scrolls, rename them and re-write their descriptions/conditions/triggers (Make some 20-30 Ring Spells). Change some artwork. Done :D Ring Lord? Ring Duke? Ringer Oh my..... "The Ringer is an excellent magician with each Finger!"
  7. No futuristic technology in Eternity (it's taking place in the equivalence of... mid 1600's? Something like that IIRC). Neither does it have any Healing magics (there is no Resurrection magic either, so if one of your characters dies they get maimed on lower difficulties and outright die on harder difficulties. It's an optional On/Off thing). Dead means "point of no return" in Eternity. * Just wanted to emphasize that I don't care much about the "realistic" aspects, but rather I enjoy the "challenging" aspects (not denying that more realism is usually hand in hand with more challenge). Sounds like a neat little balancing idea you've got there though I like it. EDIT TIME RAN OUT AGAIN (frrrrr!): Furthermore, if you aren't playing Hardcore mode, then your idea would still be a viable option for lower difficulty modes as well (such as your "Sacrifice Dexterity for a bonus in Melee Damage" example for instance). Maybe you want an extra damage output for melee and you are willing to sacrifice some Dexterity (focused minmaxing or whatever) Except on lower difficulty play it'd be more Player Controlled as in "Go to the prosthetic store and chop off your old arm and buy a new arm" whilst on Hardcore mode it could be "Go to the prosthetic store and buy a new arm because you lost your old one".
  8. Edit time ran out. You block the "Check" because you knew it was coming/part of your strategy. One sacrifice (spending more attribute points on [stat X] but can't get 18/00 in Strength because of it or putting on more armor and lose some mobility or something) to get an advantage later (get better Critical Hit Protection). * Just wanted to emphasize that I don't care much about the "realistic" aspects, but rather I enjoy the "challenging" aspects (not denying that more realism is usually hand in hand with more challenge). Sounds like a neat little balancing idea you've got there though I like it.
  9. Whilst I somewhat agree, I also somewhat disagree. Let's take an example, a job in France which is a job where you sit in front of the computer 8 hours a day: A) Physical Presence - I go to France, become a citizen of France and all that. - Get an apartment. - Get the job and I work 8 hours a day, 5 days a week (40 hours). - Get paid by French standards. B) Virtual Presence - I stay in Sweden. - I already have an apartment. - I do the same amount of work, as good as I would if I went there, I work 8 hours a day, 5 days a week (40 hours). - Get paid by French standards. Why would I get less paid if I manage to do the same amount of work?
  10. Nnyyyarrrgh daaaaaaaamn yoooooooou baaaackspaaace!!!!! Now that's done with, let me try to recall the 3 paragraphs I wrote... Recollection A) Prosthetics Gun/Cannon Arm: Arm Loss Wooden Leg: Leg Loss Sharingan (Joke) Eye Loss The last one could however be a Magical Eye or whatnot, perhaps better discussed in this thread (How many [Rings]?) which is steering towards a discussion on accessory ideas. Recollection B) Permanent Injuries & Critical Hit Protection .................................................. So.... *scratches head in ritualistic manner to summon paragraphs from thin air! Success!* Permanent Injuries should obviously only be affected by Critical Hits. So it gave me the thought of "Critical Hit Protection". But before that, I agree that losing all limbs like the Black Knight in Monty Python is awkward and rather silly so it would make sense to limit severe/permanent injuries to a 1 of the kind and have a pool of 5-6 injuries that you could suffer from. Going back to the whole "Critical Hit, Hit, Graze, Miss" discussion, it'd look something like this: - Critical Miss (Don't know if this is in, but put it in here anyways) - Optional in Normal or Hard and up mandatory. - Miss - Graze - Hit - Critical Hit - Severe Critical Hit (Causes Permanent Injury) - Hardcore Difficulty The Bold is what we know, the other two are just "suggestions" conceptual idea and visual aid. The [severe Critical Hit] would roll a dice between the 5-6 Injuries and choose one (One Eye, One Leg, One Arm, One Hand etc. etc.). Now, Critical Hit Protection would be fairly important. What would be the best ways to avoid Critical Hits? More armor perhaps? Yes. Maybe even have to spend some extra points on an Attribute to gain more protection against it. That implies you'd have to allocate points, thoughts and resources on strategical measures as to try and avoid getting a Permanent Injury. The Permanent Injury mechanic I want to discuss and envision is the one where you get "Checked" by your mate whilst playing Chess, but you can still block the "Check" by sacrificing a Peasant.
  11. Hi! This is an idea rather for a worldwide and international opportunity and what I believe could be a step forward towards a unified world. Live wherever you want, work wherever you are capable. Technology is savvy enough today to allow people work from one location in the world for a company at another location in the world. I am aware that not every profession would be able to handle this, but an office based, computer/technology/web-based profession could. Programmers, Journalists, Website Managers etc. etc. professions where you work in front of a computer. A solution? Skype or similar service. How am I envisioning this? Skype (in this case) has several features, the one I am most interested in is the "Share your Desktop" feature. So in essence, one could get a cheap dedicated computer at an office in, let's say France, and then work from India. The employees in France could see everything the worker does on their computer through the "Share your Desktop" interface, they could hold conversations with them and direct them as well. It'd be like having the employee at the job, except he'd be invisible. I am also curious about the QA implications a format like this could have. Thoughts? EDIT: Does there exist jobs like this or similar?
  12. *shrug* Not anyone else but you can answer that. Cliche but true. It is your life after all? Right? (Unless you are in a brain tank somewhere of course ) Isn't the body just a brain tank, if we are to take it to that level? Many times we fool our own senses as well, rationalizing for our own sake. Turning a white lie into truth. Making sense of the senseless. The Placebo Effect is a good example as well. But to further your thread of thought: I don't think it matters much whether we are deceived or if we deceive ourselves or whatnot. "What is reality?" is a question with many answers. "What is the meaning of life?" etc. etc. Does it really matter much? For some, maybe, and many get engulfed in it (I engulfed myself in the question and was depressed for almost 2 years asking the question and trying to figure out what to do with my life. Did it help me? Well maybe, everything in life is a lesson). What matters most, in my opinion, is what you can do. "What is reality?" is a passive philosophical question that has no real tangible answer that might or might not expand awareness & scientific intelligence. Maybe it's just a rite of passage to learn to "accept" reality for what it is to the self *shrug* "What can I do with my reality?" is an active philosophical question that I can do something with and improve. If we are living in "inception" already, what does it matter? Would it somehow be better to be outside of it? Or can we do something within it to enhance humanity and the reality we are living in and the universe we are living in? When do we stop? As a race, does humanity improve by asking the question "What is reality?" maybe, maybe not. Do we improve by asking the question "What can we do with our reality?". Yes. I believe so. "God is the Answer to Everything" is a form of ignorance, but it also enlightenment. What is "God"? I personally prefer to call it "Energy". The Life Force. Everything is "God" a.k.a. "Energy". What makes the plant grow? God? No. The transferal of energy from one location to another makes the plant grow. Why is there a war against the machine in Matrix? Because the humans are slaves? Because humanity deserves better than we are being treated in that tale? That we are prisoners? There's a different side to that coin: The Machines being batteries and slaves to our living standards as we are living right now. Does it matter more or less in the greater picture who is on top? From an omnipresent observant perspective, would it matter if Humans were on top or if Machines were on top? When or if you watch a football game, how much "meaning" does it have that one or the other wins if you are watching neutrally or just casually? As for uploading our consciousness to machines, indirectly & spiritually we have been doing this since we learned to write on cave walls. Can you see or feel the spirit of the neanderthal on those wall paintings? Can you bend time in your mind and imagine returning to that wall and gain the perspective and potential thought what the caveman was thinking when he chose to write on the wall, and question with what purpose he chose to write on the wall? Is that a fragment of the caveman's consciousness or your imagination? Are we uploading fragments of our "consciousness" on these forums as we hold our discussion, share our ideas and laughs? I do think that the Occulus Rift and all future first gen VR will carry with it a very negative effect to many people all over the world. Losing the sense of what is real and what is not. TotalBiscuit, again, mentioned that if he didn't look closely at the props around him he was sure it was real things, an effect caused by simply putting a "blindfold" on from reality. His perception got tricked and his consciousness was moved into the game for the duration of his session. What happens when people begin to immerse themselves into Virtual Reality and believes that Reality is not "Real"? Avatar touches this question as well, when Jake Sully begins to question his human reality a la "I begin to feel that out there is the reality and this is the dream" in one of his video logs. Eventually he does go all way and becomes a Na'vi too. He uploads his consciousness into the machine. Subliminal messaging? the Singularity Orogun spoke of, eventually we'll go there (or so I believe).
  13. Haha I am talking about that crappy remake that I didn't even know was a remake with Tom Cruise. Though I liked the movie, mostly for the idea, didn't think much about the acting. It was a great concept that the movie explored. Yes, we are very far away from "true" VR but we are well on our way towards it. Sony is also developing their own VR, I believe it's only a question before Microsoft begins with it. In a sense, Apple is also developing towards a VR experience in their own way (Google Glass). Interesting about Singularity, I'll be sure to read up on it. I remember reading an article which concluded it's analysis with the ability to upload your consciousness, something like "The Next 25 Years in Technology". I couldn't find the exact article but googling for it I find many articles going for the same mindset written around 2007-2008. 19 more years and we'll see
  14. Level 1 Stronghold "One-Size-Fits-All" I believe. Then, this is just an idea, the Player could cultivate the Stronghold as they see fit without restriction (save for some requirements, but it shouldn't be impossible for any class to fulfill these requirements). You want a Wizards Tower as a Warrior? Hire some contracted Wizards. You want that Aumauan architecture as an Orlan? Hire some contracted Aumaua builders. Vice versa, of course. However, for obvious reasons, upgrading a section to a Wizards Tower might lock you out from being able to make that area into a Soldier Training Grounds or something.
  15. Osvir replied to NOK222's topic in Computer and Console
I watched TotalBiscuit's take on it, he pretty much said the same thing. It doesn't look like a bad game concept though, the idea seems pretty sweet but it needs a touch-up and a massive speed-up. Isn't Beta about player opinion/feedback as much as it is about bug removal?
  16. Vanilla Sky explores that idea Calax, quite interesting movie to be honest. In a sense, a movie like Surrogates also explores this notion in its own way. Minority Report also explores this, but only very very briefly during a short scene (Virtual Reality though). Some guy lying in some machine and getting boosted by his boss, friends and family for being great. I imagine the deal with that short scene was to present this guy who wants to feel loved, but either he is too lazy to spend energy on it in real life, or he just wants a "fix" and gets the dopamine more accessibly. I simply think it's a curious thing. With things like the Occulus Rift and already the technology to control some minor functions with our brains alone (emotions), are we evolving towards a "Matrix" society? To clarify, I remember watching a video where "Prototype This" (some Discovery Channel show) managed to start a car if you were happy and if you were angry the car would shut down. One guy was sitting maybe 10 meters from a car with a brain sensor thing on his head and made it both start and shut down during the test. If it is real and/or meaningful... I don't know. Again, the Occulus Rift, it's something TotalBiscuit claims "will change the gaming industry, this is going to be the new way to play games". So for the entertainment system it might become something meaningful in the next 20-40 years. As for some sort of "meaning of life!" meaning... I dunno, it'd probably have as much meaning and purpose as our regular life. Of course, the implication and philosophy of "shape and create your own life" would be taken to a whole different level maybe you could learn certain skill sets in a Simulated Reality to pursue a career. Get a driver's license virtually~ For science I believe it could be very meaningful, because every sort of diagnostic test or hypothesis could theoretically (and practically really) be tested within a "real" simulation of reality <- If that last part makes any sense. "Let's test reality in this simulation of reality!!" similarly, if something wouldn't work in the reality simulation as it does in the real world (a bug in the system), would it not instantly be a "ruling out cause" in reality and we'd figure out why the simulation wouldn't act according to "reality" and suddenly we'd learn more about the real reality? I.E: We think reality works a specific way, put it into the simulator, realize it isn't working as intended, we figure out that we didn't know enough = we pin-point what we didn't know = we learn more. And yes, the endeavor required to build something like this would be ground-breaking and probably cost a lot to create, and would it even be worth it? Would it even work on our current hardware? Would it even work on super computers? I don't know.
  17. This very pressing question must be answered: Would "Fist" shaped mace's be considered unarmed weapons? I can totally see a Monk unleash hell and fury whilst dual-wielding a pair of those. EDIT: And to further Lephys statement and add a question to it: Will there be knuckles, claws and other "hand-to-hand" enhancing weapons in PE? I know Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale are lacking them (IIRC) which I thought was mildly odd, but that's because I'm coming from Final Fantasy (Yang, Sabin, Tifa, Zell, Amarant etc. etc. claws and knuckles are pretty present in those games)
  18. @Nirgal: I think Obsidian said (getting unsure) that they would try to make a toolset for the game. Regardless, telling Obsidian "Hey! We want to play around with the content of your game. Could you make it more accessible if possible?" even if they don't make a toolset is "no harm done". The question is free. @topic: Another idea, if there's an Arena or a Coliseum in-game. IF there is a toolset, could that be a sort of "template" and/or in some ways a map/level easy to spawn creatures and player spawn point on? Could be a neat little beginner modders "Challenge Mode" thing. Basically, the ability to create a Player made tournament~
  19. Sounds sweet. But I think if you clip 2 rings in half they should both get half n half. So if I have a... +2 Strength and a +2 Dexterity excessively, I could combine both to get one +1 Str/+1 Dex. Maybe there are some unique Rings that can only be discovered by combining 2 Rings~ 1 Summon Energy Blast Ring and 1 Frost Bolt Ring could maybe spawn a special type of ring. Would any Class be able to use Magic from Items/Scrolls/Rings/Trinkets? I know there are some items in BG (Wand of Magic Missiles, for instance) that the Rogue can use... but will any class be able to use such an item in PE? Then, if there are some "Cross Class" Talents such as "+X% Item Damage" you could pretty much make a Fighter into an Utility-Based Wizard.
  20. I couldn't care less. But it's going to exciting to play the game (PE) and see different aspects of the game that was discussed on the forums. It is, in a way, their response to the discussion.
  21. Discussed the idea of a modern day Baldur's Gate over Skype with a friend all summer 2012. Googled around a little bit after finishing the first Baldur's Gate then bam, Project Eternity out of the blue. I recall being a part of some Dragon Age Community for a while after Origins, hyping and discussing Dragon Age 2. I believe it was the official forums too, but I think "BSN" looked way different back then *shrug* was an active member for maybe 3-4 months or so~
  22. ... crafted from individually-enchanted rings! o_o... ... Dear gods... Sweet mother of mercy... I want SWORD-CHUCKS next (like nun-chucks, but with swords! and yeah, idea taken from 8-bit Theater). A warrior wielding sword-chucks and wearing a ringmail fighting a dire wererabbit! Epic. @Osvir - still making concepts Always! I know that there is a possibility that someone might see it and get inspired, if not for PE, maybe for another title made by a different company. The company my dad works for, for instance, they hire people that look for ideas on the internet for various elements to their website, marketing, article writing, innovation and people opinion and probably much much more. Bigger game companies might be doing that too, if not the designers outright check forums themselves because of hobby/gamer lifestyle. The point is, there is always a chance that someone might be inspired and make something greater out of it than I ever could
  23. Different "Equipment" Tabs. Not a suggestion it but I think it could be a solution to allowing more forms of "equipment". So, in essence: Something like that^ but with tabs for the Equipment. The "Rings" tab could be (conceptual) just hands (fingers) and a face in the middle (eye, lip, ears): Tattoos:
