  1. Yes, it is. The original JRPGs I think were heavily inspired by D&D and Wizardry. In fact Wizardry still seems to have a solid foundation in the Japanese market. In those games you don't roll your stats, but you basically make your own protagonists. They are also considered very old school by Western reviewers who grade them excessively harshely (which is terrible, Etrian Odyssey was one of the best new RPG's out with it's generation, and the same goes for Wizardry: Labyrinth of Lost Souls). Not the best graphics, but graphics don't always make the game.
  2. when will the starter edition be available though? Immediately after they finish with the servers, or after the game release? No intentions on buying the game, but if they have a trial or starter I may be tempted to give it a shot, not that I'm expecting to be impressed or anything.
  3. hey, that kid was great! And a killer blitzball player on top of that!!! Some of the best JRPG's of recent years have come out on the PSP and NDS. For awesomeness, the re-release of FFIII on the NDS was a killer game, as was FFIV complete on the PSP (they also had a graphically ramped up version of FFIV on the NDS). Suikoden for the NDS was pretty sweet as well. For the PSP, though not rated as highly, I really enjoyed Brave Story. For Wizardry fans, JRPGs are the biggest things out there in recent years, with Wizardry, Etrian Odyssey, and Class of Heroes (unfortunately CoH 2 probably won't make it out West from all appearances at this point).
  4. REALLY, SERIOUSLY...YOU'RE CALLING THIS DLC???? http://www.gamespot.com/news/street-fighter-x-tekken-dev-disappointed-in-dlc-being-hacked-6372028 Street Fighter X Tekken dev 'disappointed' in DLC being hacked The kicker...the "DLC" wasn't actually downloadable...it was already on the disk. It just wasn't unlocked...hence why it could be hacked. Maybe companies should stop holding back content they've already made in their desires to make a quick buck. Then again, I think they bled me dry with Marvel vs. Capcom already.
  5. that was absolutely cool aka go here http://www.bayrou.fr/ and do the konami code edit: for those of you who are wondering up,up,down,down,left,right,left,right,b,a....enter
  6. Well, they only wanted 20K for the game? That's rather low. That said, they wasted at least 4K I think. Why the heck did they need to spend funds on Ipads and going to PAX? Poster Art? That would be around 10K so at least half their funds to spend on game development, even if not the entire 20K. For IPADS I'd have though that would be something they'd have personally anyways if they wanted them. The rest of the stuff sounds like advertising. If they finished the game already, then I can see it as an advertisement budget, but if they were still making the game...that seems odd to go with the advertising before the actual creation since they don't have to worry about crowing up to a publisher anyways. Meh. Just my thoughts on their kickstarter thing. Interesting to see how big a chunk Kickstarter takes out.
  7. Can't ever say I followed rec.games.video to tell the truth. I'm not familiar with the arguments or discussions that happened there. I would be for more of the Japanese RPGs to come across the ocean. It seems many we get these days are of a particular brand, whilst some of the others which are more like what I remember never get across to the US anymore. It took like an army of requests and pleas and bartering for someone to finally even consider Xenoblade coming over...and there are a lot more where that one came from which will never see the light of day in the West simply because the japanese companies do not feel they will bring enough of a return.
  8. One slight differential, I thought Crysis was actually quite fun.
  9. Video gamers aren't manly... Mushing in -40 degree weather is manly
  10. Really? And which game made the Bioware name be worth a damn to most gamers? Ah. Shattered Steel and MDK 2??
  11. Racing games are fun as long as they don't have the rubber bands in effect. I absolutely LOATHE the rubber band that some of them decide to put in to make it "challenging." That's not challenging, it's either letting me cheat like a dog...or if I'm ahead the game is cheating like a dog!!!! FPS games have gotten a lot harder in my opinion. I occasionally go back and play old games, Doom, Quake, Quake II, all seem a LOT easier than many modern FPS games. Of course you then hit a spike in difficulty around the end of the 90s and beginning of the 00s of which many are more difficult than many (and those that they aren't harder then are about on par with them) of those that come out today.
  12. Meh, game descends into abject absurdity from the moment you hear the citadel has been kidnapped. Been thinking a bit about some improvements (with the benefit of hindsight)... Drop all the pointless Fed-Ex quests. All of them. They add nothing to the game and adds to the sense of bad pacing. No trace of those quests would add more to the game than it lose. Drop Vega, Ashley, Liara and EDI as party members (Kaidan was actually surprisingly tolerable when you play a male Shepard and can ignore romatic pursuits). Reallocate those resources spent to one or two interesting party members. Drop Kai Leng. Adds nothing to the game. Put a stop sign at the outskirts of London and tell people 'To be continued' and then find a decent way to wrap up the game. But then what about War assets? I barely have enough already, and need more for the Shep breaths for a second at the end if I only play SP!
  13. Source? Ah...wth...it doesn't matter. Regardless of how many they have...I'm thinking they could have only sold a little over a million and still turned a profit. With how many they sold, I think ME3 turned out very well for them.
  14. http://kotaku.com/58...e-united-states Another Kotaku editorial on JRPG's which I found interesting after following a link from your editorial. PS: I love the guy who was with Working Designs...and love his tastes in games.
  15. 150. Plus tons of outsourcing. Greg said they desperately wanna reach the big boys one day in terms of sales. Well, good luck with that. I heard it was 57. around 50+ for ME1 54 for ME2 and 57 for ME3 Oh well....if I'm wrong...that's life. ME3 still sold well enough to turn a profit and be a success for Bio. Of course that isn't counting some of the extras...and I don't count the outsourcing or other people that aren't actually Bio employees... Interns don't count, temps don't count...etc...etc...etc...
  16. Demon's Souls spread very slowly, though. But yes, it was mostly due to being somewhat fresh experience. Binary Domain doesn't offer anything new, that's why nobody really cares about it. But Sega's marketing is still lacklustre. I love Sega...but you hit this dead on in my opinion...
  17. I know...they even show him shaving it in the ads...supposedly so he's in "disguise" or something...who getting a new start or something. Then he blows it by shooting everything in sight! Even if he shaved it, they make him appear bald...so bald and fat it is. Reminds me of some of their game developers! In fact, striking how he resembles one that can't even run 100 yards... Yeah, I was a big fan of Max Payne, I might give this new one a shot...but I think they stand a chance of having ruined their franchise with this installment. I'm not really wanting to play a fat bald man that in real life I would outshoot, outrun, and out bullit time.
  18. That's PC only, mate. The 360 version was just released, so let's re-evaluate that number again in a couple of months. Yes, 1,3 million units sold in NA is considered a failure by BioWare's/EA's standards, since they are the one who aimed to sell 10 million+ units. Well, they failed. If something like Skyrim can sell 10 million units, then BioWare (self-proclaimed "best RPG developer and story-tellers out there) certainly must reach that target too, no? Except, BioWare doesn't get it. They're stuck in their old ways and that's why they continue to become more and more irrelevant. NO WAY they aimed for 10 million. They only made and shipped out 3.5 million. My math shows that's not even half of 10 million. I'd say they expected around 3.5 million throughout the lifetime of ME3. Any more than 4 million and they'd have to get a reprint/repress just to fill the orders. I think the develpment team was only around 50-60 (I think more precisely around 57) people for ME3. They also have TOr (the big personnel hog) and DA series that they are working on along with...something other stuff. Looks like we are on the same page. Whatever happens with ME3's reaction...it's not going to make ME3 a failure. The actual reaction people have had to ME3 and Bio's responses will be seen in their next games. That's the moment of truth. That's when Bio either calls their bluff and finds out all those claiming they won't buy another Bio game unless such and such happens were really bluffing all along...OR Bio get's hit with a slap of reality. Thus far, they've called the DA2 detractor's bluff...except I think a majority were waiting for ME3 and seeing how that turned out. I'd say that now is the true test of whether people are fed up with Bio, are bluffing, or if those complaining are truly a minority like Bio and some others have claimed in the past. IF they are a minority...I expect Bio's next game to sell well, if they are not...and they aren't bluffing about their disappointment...I expect Bio will suddenly have a VERY RUDE awakening next game they release.
  19. III was fun. The best part was picking your bride and seeing the results. Something I still like and in some ways I feel Agarest copies today (best part of Agarest as well though). I hated the mazes/dungeons though...they had passages that looked so much alike it was hard to remember where exactly you had been and where you were going...or if you mapped it, just exactly where you were!!!
  20. I like Max Payne. It is an enjoyable game. Max Payne 2 was okay, not as good as the first, but okay. Max Payne 3, no idea how it will be. The fat, bald guy doesn't look like any Max Payne I know though. I know many cops who actually exercised, stayed in shape and ARE NOT fat and bald. I think MP3 is designed by gamers who want to be Max Payne, they are all fat and bald, but could never do bullit time...so create the vortex of impossibility of someone who can via a computer game. Will it have the Noir feel to it still? Or will it simply be a Uncharted rehash now? Except instead of a fit guy who travels with fit companions (one who happens to be an older guy who adventures and is NOT fat and bald) it will be a fat, bald guy who somehow acts as if he's 25 and athletic! On another note: Yes, those tanks from EA certainly do look like a blatant rip of Warhammer 40K designs.
  21. I believe ME3 has sold at least 3.1 million units, or sold through 3.1 million. It initially shipped or sold in around 3.5 million if I understand correctly. Sales wise I think it's actually right about on par for what they were aiming for. Of course that's the entire talley thus far from what I understand, not just March, and worldwide, not just US. (edit: Note the article just states US sales...not all sales). From it, I think Bio thinks they didn't get hurt from DA2 (ME3 sold well) and DA2's reaction was bluster and bluff, not what would really happen. I know that I and others however were willing to give ME3 a shot still, with the hopes that DA2 was just a happenchance trip up on Bio's part. I may buy the next bio game...but I think many who placed reliance on ME3 may not be back. However, I think Bio won't believe ANYONE saying they won't buy the next Bio game due to how ME3 sold after people claimed the same thing after DA2. If people are actually serious this time around though...and they were waiting to see if Bio had a one time problem with DA2 so gave ME3 a chance and were disappointed again....then Bio probably won't get the message till their next game. That is if their next game is a total flop.
  22. Of the Phantasy Star series my favorites are probably II and IV. Didn't really care for it as much after they started the entire Online biz. I suppose the PS2 ones started to be at least bearable again.
  23. When I play RPGs I play it for the story, I also play it for the personal choices/interaction. I normally do NOT PLAY it for the combat. The way combat is handled CAN make me decide not to get a game or play a game, so it's important, but it's NOT the reason I actually play the game. Bioware noted that a MAJORITY of players play their games on the easy mode (at least once they started monitoring you all big brother like on their network). Personally, I'll even admit, on my 3rd playthrough of ME3, my last, I started off with Normal, like...normal...but then once I got nearer to the end, I got bored with it. I simply decided I'd seen this all before and I was ready to be done. I shifted it to Narrative and went high gear for the end skipping any sidequests remaing simply to get done with the experience. I wanted to get through the game quickly simply so I could get the character to the end. I have no problem with players cheating or playing on easy. In fact I think a majority who actually finish the games probably do play it on easy or cheat. There are only a few sadists in the world afterall...me included among them occasionally, especially on FPS games.
  24. That was one of those "Wtf? Is she in the right business?" moments for me when I first read what she'd said. I generally either cheat or play on easy because I find combat to be the least enjoyable part of any of the RPGs I play and try to get through it as fast as possible to get on with the story. Thanks for the honesty.
