Hiro Protagonist II replied to Bryy's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
My first submission was a sword. But it was broken down into pieces like in BG2. You had to collect all 4 items and get it crafted by an NPC. I received an email that it wasn't allowed. So I went with a Cloak. I gave the cloak a name and asked Obs to do the rest. I have no idea what the cloak does.- 110 replies

Yeah, I originally did a weapon and then changed it due to Josh asking not to do them. Looks like my item will be lost in the myriad of other people's items. Oh well.- 110 replies

I was trying to understand the discussion and what people prefer. I do like the IE type of storytelling where you see the whole story, or at least 99% of it. I think the exception is the class specific strongholds in BG2 with your main characters. You could still do part of those plot lines if you were another class and that was okay for me.

Kiting as a gameplay strategy isn't something new in video games. The term just became popular in MMOs and was tactical strategy gameplay well before MMOs. Even back in the 70s and 80s. I see people say this or that isn't tactical gameplay and degenerative. I'm just waiting for the next tactical strategy is deemed degenerative by some gamers. Perhaps a list of what is degenerative so gamers can add this to their list.

Maybe Obsidian shouldn't hand out rewards during Kickstarter campaigns since everyone who missed out on it will just cry about it. Seriously, what's the point of a reward if everyone gets it? It stops being a reward and is just part of the game. I saw this on the World of Tanks boards with players crying about missing out on their beta tank. I was actually in the beta but didn't play enough games to get the beta tank. I didn't realise you had to play like 1000 games or how many it was at the time. Since there was going to be a server wipe when it went live, I decided put WoT on hold for a while until it went live. I didn't cry about it like so many others. I just thought, 'oh well'. The same with the Diablo forums with missing out on their beta achievement because they couldn't get in the beta. Also, the OP is buying the retail version. The OP can get everything in their game and still get 100%. Just like in Diablo 3 where everyone can get 100% achievements regardless of when you started playing. The difference being in Diablo 3 is the Feats of Strength achievements which don't contribute to your 100% total. It will probably be the same with the retail version with not having the KS achievement listed. And as Helz said, some crafty modder will probably be able to unlock the in game item. So you may still get the item.

So I'm guessing some people want an IE type game where regardless of companions or main character, you basically get the whole story? Or do people prefer a choose your own adventure and you decide with choices and consequences and the story is unique? And when you play again with another character and different companions and different choices, you get an entirely different story?

I think it's also best to look at the concept art and notice how the characters are distinguishable without having the need for boobies sticking out. The middle female plate armour below is similar to the male plate armour and both the female and males are easily distinguishable from each other. In the below pictures, the females practically have no boobs but still can tell the difference between the two.- 338 replies

I still don't get it. It's an in game achievement and item for being a backer at the time. The same as nobody can't request Blizzard to hand out those achievements when they were current 3 years ago. And there's many examples of other games where you may have received an in game item (eg. World of Tanks beta tank) or achievement during that specified time. The time has passed.

If I make a party which are all female (main character), Pallegina, Cadegund, Sagani and possibly 2 other unannounced female NPCs. Do I really need to have boob scale for some of my characters?- 338 replies

Well it looks a hundred times better than that horrible movie. At least the actor looks like the comic book character. But I don't have high hopes for this series. I would've preferred it was set in England like the comic. But it's an American TV show so it's to be expected. Will wait and see when it comes out. What I found humorous were the comments suggesting the TV series looks crap and the movie was great. Obviously not a lot of people have read Hellblazer. That's like saying Will Smith's 'I am Legend' is great and someone making a TV series more aligned and very close to Richard Matheson's book and calling it crap. Interestingly, I am Legend scored higher than Constantine on sites like imdb and rotten tomatoes. So who knows.

I don't understand the importance of wanting an achievement that you never participated in. Similar to other games where you get achievements for participating in different things like Beta or Web Promotions (Diablo 3 comes to mind) and months or years down the track wanting that Web Promotion or Beta achievement because other people have it. Despite the fact you never participated in it in the first place.

I agree with the sentiments of others. It would be good to go to the Backer Portal and to read the latest news and links to news sites, to see updated screen shots and concept artwork which hasn't been updated for half a year and just have a one stop repository of information. I have no problem with a third party site getting the scoop on something. It would be nice to be able to go to the Backer Portal a couple / few days later and see an actual link to the news article or someone's website, twitter account, etc. Especially for those who don't frequent the boards, it would be good to have all news links available in one spot. Josh has posted a lot of lore on the boards and it would be good to see part of the Backer Portal dedicated to the lore of the game with all his (or over dev's) posts.

Update #77: Art in Alpha
Hiro Protagonist II replied to BAdler's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
Considering you were responding to me in the last few posts and directly quoting me, one would think you were including me in your broad and sweeping generalisation of: 'Well, given a lack of any links... leaving only the last two diehards'. Lack of links? That's at me? Yes? Considering it was me you were asking for links and then including me as the last or the diehards at the end of your post. Despite the fact I have never posted in any boob plate armour threads on this board. Nice jump to conclusion there. and then: Right, so it's clearly in another thread and not the one I linked at and did bother to read but not all the way through. You've behaved rather unfortunately in the past, so normally I have you on my block list. Ergo I may have missed whether you commented or not. No matter. Pointless discussion anyway. Bye. Again. I ask the question: Are you suggesting there wasn't threads and pages and pages of people not wanting boob plate? Because you seem to be suggesting there wasn't and only one thread. You avoid questions like the one I asked. And what will be the purpose if I post links to another three or four threads? To prove I'm right? Because I have no idea why you want to have all these other threads. It's easy to find them with a quick search. It's truly bizarre. And you've behaved rather unfortunately in the past as well. Accusing others with no proof, broad sweeping generalisations. Dodge and weave tactics when called out. Perhaps looking at your behaviour first. You can put me on your block list. It's okay. Nice to see you engage in what you see as pointless discussions. You must like jumping into pointless discussions on the internet. And yeah, bye.- 338 replies

If you bothered to read your own link, I've never once complained about boob plate. In fact, you will not find a post by me in any boob plate thread. So I'm at a loss why you would say I am one of the last diehards from the boob plate armour threads continuing with the boob scale armour. But you do have a habit of posting and jumping to conclusions. Also, I'm unsure why you need me to post links to boob armour threads? Are you suggesting there wasn't threads and pages and pages of people not wanting boob plate?- 338 replies

You've been consistently called out and asked if you have played the games and you never admit to it. In fact, a number of people have made posts in this very thread about you having not played the IE games and you haven't responded to them. And there's been many posts about this issue with you in threads over the last few weeks/months and you avoid those posts and don't respond. And when called for proof about something in the IE games, you never provide it. No screen shot. Nothing. So now all of a sudden you've played the Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale games? I guess recently? That's great. Now how about testing whether everyone in this thread is right about playing with a 4 member party? Why not test for yourself what we're saying is true? Why argue the point for pages and pages and not test it for yourself? I don't get it. If you have the games, if someone said this is what happens in a game, I'd be very tempted to check if what they're saying is true. What I wouldn't be doing is arguing against it for pages and pages. And the discussion with me isn't worth it anymore? Oh Lephys. You know you'll be back arguing over and over. It's what you do. You say things like 'good day to you' and leave, and then immediately jump right back in. And with the 4 opposed to 6 party members. We give examples and you argue against it. If you have the games, why not test it? Test what we're saying is true. Complete a couple of chapters with 4 members and see if it is easier or harder. Hiro gives an example and it turns out to be true. Stun gives an example, and yep, that turns out to be true. Wouldn't that be a good way to test what we're saying is true? The loot spread is better with 4 players? My players aren't dying as much? The reloads have gone down? The fights are actually easier because I'm at a higher level than if I was with 6 party members? I now have access to a Fireball spell and have more fireballs to throw around the place but in my 6 party member game, my mage would only have 1 fireball memorised at this part of the game? Well logic and reason can be frustrating to those who find it frustrating. I don't feel bad when I put up logical reasons why things apparently work such in the IE games. And I'm not sure if you are trying or not. Only you can answer that. How many pages does it take, how many people is required to convince you that what we're saying is true? The best way in my mind if you have the games is test what we're saying. If everyone in a thread was posting about something, trying to convince me that something happens in a game which does defy conventional thinking, I would be inclined to test it. Not disagree for pages. But mostly your post comes across as off topic. If you want to disagree or not even respond to people who have tried to tell you one thing, and not test what everyone is saying is true, then that's something you have to reconcile with yourself.

Not really. You just claim what happens in a game. You haven't shown any evidence that it occurs, or even begun to explain WHY it occurs. At least Stun did a bit (the explain part). I don't understand why it's all on me to produce concrete evidence that perfectly reasonable notions are, indeed, in effect in the game mechanics, while there's absolutely no pressure for you to produce any evidence that it is, in fact, happening in the game. I'm sorry, but "see, people say it's easier with 4 people instead of 6" is not proof. People also say placebo pills work better for them than the real thing, until they know it's a placebo. Through no fault of their own, the human brain allows us to perceive differences where there aren't really any differences. Anwyho, the whole point at the start of this whole debate was just that, if the game's challenging for a party of 6, it should be extremely challenging for a party of 1. In the context of that argument, the whole "a party of 4 is actually easier than a party of 6" scenario got brought up, which I simply observed shouldn't always be the case. Having 2 more people always grants you a higher potential by raising the ceiling on your limitations. It's not always huge, and there's a lot of chance involved, but that's all a constant. Your party of 4 could suffer a bunch of ill luck just as easily as your party of 6, etc. There's no point in comparing what COULD happen to one group to something ELSE happening to the other group. Hang on. Notice the 'WE" in my post? There are multiple people in this thread saying the same thing. Not just me. Also, I gave a few examples on this page of the thread on why it is the case. The default for you is to argue against our position. Stun gave some great examples and you still argue against his position. There is some logic to these examples which you don't want to accept. Other people come into this thread with their knowledge and experience and say, yes, strangely enough, having 6 can be harder than 4. But you still won't believe the examples and what people are saying. And for someone who has never played the game, I find it extremely bizarre that you would argue against gamers who have actually played the game. It would be the same as me going onto the BioWare forums, arguing against gamers who have played Mass Effect and saying they are wrong when logically for me it doesn't make sense even though I've never played Mass Effect. I wouldn't be that arrogant to think that I'm right and everyone who has played the game is wrong, especially when those gamers have given examples. And then continue blindly arguing the point. Which is what you're doing. It really is bizarre. No, I'm not. You're having the fact that they can be liabilities supercede the fact that they absolutely offer additional combat-challenge-tackling potential. At the very least, 4 character can only be 4 different classes. Thus, in PoE, having 6 characters will provide two entire additional categories of abilities with which to form tactics and provide support for your other 4 people. Not to mention Stamina Health, standard attacks, engagement potential, etc. You know what? I may not be a BG expert, but I'm really not worried about that. Because PoE isn't going to be BG. And my reasoning is sound. What disturbs me isn't that you're suggesting the results might not be what I'm estimating they'll be. It's that you're dismissing my reasoning, as though it doesn't somehow make any sense. And, for some reason, you keep taking it not as something to consider and observe in all this, but as "SEE, THIS IS WHY EVERYTHING YOU SAID IS WRONG!". No I'm not. You're discounting the liabilities outright. You're not even contemplating that having 2 extra members can be liabilities. All you see is 2 extra party members, therefore the benefit outweighs the negatives. You're discounting the possibilities that the benefits and negatives could be equal and makes no difference having those extra 2 party members, or the negatives can be slightly more than the positives and overall they become liabilities which makes the game harder. One reason could be is you're spending time trying to keep those other two alive when you could be concentrating on the other 4 who are coping just fine. You're tactics could change by moving one of those 4 away to protect those two. The whole combat then changes. And the reasons could very well be loot spread which others have cited. Loot spread is a very good example too. And again with the difference with party xp in a 4 member party as opposed to a 6 member party. The skills that 4 member party has can be similar as the 6 member party. This was the case with dual and mutli-classing in the IE games. And from what we know, you will be able to do something similar in PoE with assigning skills to characters that normally wouldn't have them in the IE games, unless they dualed or mutli-classed. There's been many reasons. Because your party members are variables, you can't say for certain that having 6 is better. And there's been many reasons and examples in this thread why those 2 extra party members can be liabilities with the IE games. This is the case with the IE games which PoE is a spiritual successor to. Whether this will happen in PoE, nobody knows until the game is released and gamers can test the differences in party sizes. However, we have the IE games to look to. To see if things will be similar. Will the same reasons that apply to the IE games with 4 party members also apply to PoE? Again, nobody knows now but we have the benefit of the IE games to know what works and what doesn't. To see how some things in the IE games are either broken, anomalous, outright head turning with WTF moments and things like a 4 member party that defy conventional thinking, because of things that people didn't realise at the time when playing. I predict people will be trying to find out what party size is the easiest in PoE. And I have my doubts that it will be 6 party members with having experienced the IE games. No one is saying you have to be a BG expert. The fact is you've never played the game at all. You have no experience whatsoever with the game. Your reasoning is not sound when you discount the variables, when you discount the cons of having extra party members and diminishing returns with the IE games. When we have examples of the IE games to back us up. There is a certain logic why 4 party members are better than 6 in the IE games, you're just not willing to accept it. And I have no idea what evidence you require for us to prove this to you. Our reasoning behind our arguments are more than sound, especially when we give examples.

Oh my lord yes. there wasn't just pages and pages but threads. And the outrage wasn't just on these forums either. Which is why I find it odd (and Gromnir points out) that there was so many people against boob plate back then, but now you hardly hear a peep with boob scale with the exception of a few people - pointing out how people have now changed their position with the whole boob armour.- 338 replies

This is how I see it. There's always going to be gamers that will find a way. And I imagine there will be a lot of players trying different classes and builds to find some of the most optimal builds to solo PoE. Considering PoE is taking a lot from systems like 4th Ed which takes character/class optimisation to levels you've never dreamed of if you've never played it, I can see a lot of optimal builds that will come in this game. There will be threads about this for sure.

Update #77: Art in Alpha
Hiro Protagonist II replied to BAdler's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
I don't play BG:EE anymore. There were a few bugs that never got fixed. Others may not realise there's bugs while playing because they may not be game breaking bugs and not realise certain things aren't working as intended. But bugs introduced by Overhaul are still in the game, and that comes from meta knowledge. It's jarring for me having played the original game so many times. I just loaded that save game because it shows what you can do with the circles. I prefer the original game and continue to play it. Also, at first it was odd seeing different coloured circles, but after a while you do get used to it. Now, it doesn't bother me. But yes, the models are different to differentiate them already. Even different colours of armour, different helms, etc. And a lot of the time, they will be facing away from you. Walking in directions where you won't be seeing the front of them. In battle where the enemy may be either directly above you (North) or to either side of North.- 338 replies

No, she's human. You're right in that the different outline of the body is one of many visual cue's that you can use to work out from the male body. And they are both using the same full plate. Minsc is bigger, the human female is smaller. The armour would generally be smaller for a female. The size of the armour wouldn't be the same for everyone. eg. in real life, a smaller man would have smaller armour than a larger man. I very much doubt the smithy would have a production line with only one size. And that is the EE and you can colour coordinate the circles. The colour comes from the colour you chose for the clothing on your character.- 338 replies
