Food and resting.
TrashMan replied to amarok's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I'd like provisions to matter. More than just food. Food is for eating. Medical supplies are for injuries. Basic campsite items are for resting. Everything gets consumed based on circumstances. The worse your injuries, the more medical supplies you consume. If you are injured and bled a lot, you need to replenish your strength so you would eat more. Basic campsite items last almsot indefinately. I kinda like that in old PnP you really could carry tons of items. Chalk. Coal. Oil. Pots and pans. Flint. Sleeping bags. Bags in general (ALWAYS carry bags). Rope. Those stuff had it's use. When players make ap arty and use up all the starting gold on weapon and armor, go out in the wilderness exploring and start setting a camp, only to realize they didn't bring almost none of the necessities. -
Well, you did mention positioning the party at the entrance the assasin will come trough and dogpiling on him the second he comes. Which implies you know who he is OR the comabt auto-starts. Wy to go mr. Literal. A big, luxurious mansion is gonna to have a lot more possible positions than a small room. Good positions alos depend on the position of everything else within that space. Colums, tables, plants, furniture and other people who are generally on the move). Nice job missing the point. How does navigating trough a convo in any way gives you more flexibiltiy OR is faster or simpler than just clicking on the location? It's more work for the developer for no actual gain. Clothing for formal events varries depending on cultuire, but it is typicly designed to look impressiv,e highly decorative and layered. So why wouldn't you be wearing some kidn of robe? You not going naked - anything that covers up your torso can more or less cover a breastplate. You cna wear a kevlar vest beneath clothes - you can also do the smae with a breastplate. There are clothes out there thehat would do a good job of hiding it. And no, changing clothes is not unusual for human beings, especialyl when beinginvited to a formal party. What WOULD be strange if you came to the party in your normal adventurer gear. Because the head is a hard target to hit and long-range medieval weapons aren't known for their accuracy. Yeah, he could go for your head - but he is less likely to miss. And if he misses he isn't going to get a second chance. Like I siad - poison is the best bet. Evidence? You mean besides all the other conversations we had? I'm not sure they prove what you think they prove.

Which is beside the point. You're asking the player to compensate for bad design. Why should he? You might as well add a "I win" bottun and then claim it is brilliant design because it makes it easier on the players. After all, you don't have to click it. The fact that it compeltely undermines the entire purpose of the game is irrelevant to you? -

It's still quite disturbing and troublesome that *any* nation within Europe can parade around with a Swastika on a flag and not receive EU sanctions public international scorn in return. Meh. Frak international scorn. Who the frak are they to tell me what symbols I'm allowed to like or dislike. Personally I like the swastika. It's catchy and has a long tradition. Then come the natzi's and suddenly it's off-limits. The fact that the symbol is ancient and represents the sun/life, or that is used in Asia apprently is irrelevant. Or the fact that if you change the color or the orientation it's NOT the natzi symbol anymroe than france and italy share the same flag. -

TrashMan replied to Barothmuk's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Then you're a highly unusual person. Most humans don't have that kind of control over their emotions. Really? I find it rather simple really. For an example, if I told you I was offended if you use the word "cabbage" would you apologize and stop using the word or would you go "that's nothing to be offended about" and continue using it? There has to be some critera for when something is offensive and when it isn't. You can't completely rely on the offended person to define it. Given that I'm blonde too I'd say that don't care at all. I'm also Christian and I'm not bothered by jokes about religion, God or christians. Nor do generally jokes about my nation bother me. Some won't sit well with me, but then again, they don't have to. I'm not the only audience, so my approval is not required. How about truth? If someone askes you "what is your oppinion on X?" how do you answer is you know your truthfull answer WILL rub someone the wrong way? Will you lie to avoid offending someone? Even if they ask for the truth? Will you let the truth be the victim? I disagree. The effect of microaggressions -- such as offensive jokes told "in good fun" has been studied a quite a bit. They actually do more psychological damage over time than overt aggressions. The reason is that it's socially costly to react to them. Just swallowing those little insults day after day wears down your self-esteem. Then you build defenses, such as taking it out on some other group. That's depressing and totally unnecessary. Well, I denounce the entire notion of it. No, I want a social climate of reason. To you it might seem like it's the same thing as mantaining, but as I said before - perceptions. Hostile enviroment? Hardly. Quite the contrary, I am constantly baffled at the extreeme levels of intolerance the so-called champions of tolerance actually tend to display. ****** Methinks oyu are looking for another word. Profiling is understandable. Mistrust based on negative experience is understandable. Those are survival machanisms that served humanity well. Racism is harder to swallow, but I guess even that can be justifiable in extreeme circumstances, altough I can't think of one. -

You wouldn't know a fact if it ran over you in a Death star. Just like you missed that the long maaaaybe is not a typo - it's deliberate to show sarcasm in how it is said. And for the record, "No, you are the stupid-head" implies the first poster called the second one a stupid-head. And stupid-head is ALSO an argument that most people above age of ten don't use, so I hope that foot of your tastes good. So feel free to think of me as an ignorant who refuses to acknowledge facts. I will do the same in regards to you and we can both go on our merry way, being insufferable d*** in eachoters eyes. -

You? Your wit is truly comparable to a most remarkably gifted five-year-old child. Congratulations. While thank you. Coming from an aomeba, that's a nice compliment. So tell me - you done with the tounge fencing? Or do you want to throw more not-so-veiled insults at me? Because if you have even a fraction of the intellect you claim to have, you know where insults lead on forums... Just in case you don't know it - thread lockage. So maaaaabye - just maybe - you should consider toning down your rethoric. Or more preferable, if my posts offend you that much, there's an ignore option. Lords knows I will take it if this continues. -

I will feel bad only if *I* feel there is reason for me to feel bad. Jokes are jokes. The whole point of it is that they are making fun of someone or something. Are all blondes in he world insulted when someone tells a blonde joke? No? No, it's a **** move to do it for the sole purpose of being a d*** and "hurting" others. A persons life should not fall to walking on eggshells around easily offended poeple. It's so easy to make people uncomfortable. And often times you really can't avoid hurting someone. - especially with conflict of oppinion. A joke is NOT telling them they are of lower status. Perceptions. Interestingly enough I consider such apologetic, special snowflake behavior as inherently harmfull and logicly wrong, and I hope to shift social climate too. So don't cross your fingers on me seeing the "error of my ways" as that would require my ways to be in error to begin with. Which they are not. I'm gonna treat everyone the same. Period. -

Alas, my point surfaces. Time-sensitivity is fine, until your characters' very existence and breath-taking is time-sensitive, so that the game becomes much like a race. Which it shouldn't resemble. Situational time-sensitivity? Awesome possum. "The sun just moved 20-degrees across the sky, and now 73 situations across the world have changed"? Overboard. Shouldn't? There is no such thing. There is no "one true way of RPG design" and it depends on the game mechanics, story, pacing and what hte devs want to achieve. There may very well be a part of the game where you really are in a massive hurry and the game becomes a race for a short while. Which is should resemble in that case.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but wheren't Landsketch mercenaries rather unique? IIRC, they were the only ones allowed to dress like that - the permission given them specificly by the king - the reasoning being they have such a crappy and short life, let them enjoy plundering pieces of cloting and combining them.

Everything. If one side can play with words and definitions, so can the other. Yes, I am aware of that possibility. I'm also aware of the possibility that it might help. Look, you guys were whining about your "white knights" for a quite a while here before anyone spoke up. You clearly don't enjoy that being challenged much. That's a form of privilege too. Challenged? No. Annoyed more like it. Privilige? Not really. Uh... I dunno. Most people don't actually enjoy going out of their way to hurt people's feelings, as a general rule. Personally, I consider people who derive enjoyment out of doing that bullies, and I don't care much for them. How about you? Telling jokes is "going out of ones way" now? It is done deliberately to hurt people? Ok..is there anything related to minorities that isn't "going out of ones way"? Mind you, I am a member of a specific minority group. I run into misconception and prejudice and ignorance all the time. Yes it's damn annoying. Yes I sometimes want to slap people. No, my group doesn't get any kind of protection from anyone. And I often laugh at jokes aimed at my group because frak it - relax and enjoy the little things in life. No, I don't want to institute thought police or pressure or guilt-trip people to change their minds - as enticing as it may sound. You can't get rid of peoples prejudices easily...sometimes not at all. That is something that can only be done trough time and exposure. Trying to force change only generates resistance. Being hypocritical about it only makes matters worse. -

OH excuseeeee me princes-.. I mean, Glorious Master of Mankind. Not all of us mortals are blessed with english being their native language or the power to remain fully focused and concetrated when typing 24/7, regardless what they are doing. Truly my spelling mistake is a crime without equal and I must flog myself to death in shame. If only I could come up with such masterfull, well-thought out responses like attacking someone elses spelling! Truly the highest point of internet debating that will never be surpassed. And linking random internet articles! A master-stroke. It's not like the internet is full of all kinds of articles and counter-articles on all manenrs of sensitive issues (like global warming). Surely if I were to link an internet article on global warming, I would definatley prove my point to everyone beyond a shadow of doubt. -
What seems silly to me is the notion that the assasin will come exactly trough the door you predict and will be waring a clearly recognizable garb, with the big letters "I'm an assasin" branded on his forehead. No, if an assasin were to come he will probably look like any other guest. There would be little point in attempting to hide near the entrance when you don't know how he looks like. Le'ts suppose random NPC's are enetering hte room. And the assin is randomy assigned to be one of them. Then it doesn't matter if your who team is camping the door, since you don't know who he is and combat doesn't auto-start. "There is only a limited number of places where your people can stand" - well, that depends on the room, doesn't it? And to answer your previous post - I'm 99% sure I won't screw up any given battle that isn't a boss-battle. Should we then automate that? So insted of clicking on Bob and clicking on the spot, you basicly want to navigate tough a conversation: PNPC: "So, how do we go about it Boss? Who goes where" PC: Select BOB PNPC Bob: "yeah boss, where do you want me?" PC: Select balcony. PNPC: "Ok boss. On my way." *repeat for every party NPC* I fail to see an improvement 2 is finite and 10 is finite, therefore they are equal? And is the assasin uses pathing algorith, then his route is mellable depending on other NPC's mingling in the area. If you simplify everything enough, all things end up "no brainers". A breastplate bulky? If you wear a robe over it, you'll just look like someone who gained a few pounds. Unless the assasin is deeply familiar with your diet and body weight, there really should be nothing tipping him off. You'd be just another fat patron. Well, I'm asserting it is you who choses not to see what I am saying.

A) Being white makes no difference. You shouldn't be paying more attention to what you're saying just because you're white. That is just stupid. B) Are you aware that I label what you are doing as microagression? Are you aware that if ANY action has impact then such double-standards alos have a negative impact, despite your protests that it's all i nthe name of justice and fairness. This apologist, ass-kissing behavior might actually do more harm than good. C) You live with it like everyone else. I'm sorry, but people don't have the right to NOT be insulted or angry. You are basicly forming a thought-police. D) Why wouldn't I want to tell jokes about them? I make fun of everyone and everything else (myself and God included), so why the heck should they be exempt like some sacred cow? -

It would make me think that you're lying, actually. But of course. It's far easier than actually questioning your preconceptions after all. It's the default human response when hearign something that doesn't mesh well with his worldview. So you want to establish equality by being unequal? Note that I am talking strictly about behavior, not welfare, so that strawmen can go die in a fire. Yes, we privileged tend to reserve that right a lot. Actually, any sane man or woman would reserve that right - because it's the only oen that makes sense. You can go ahead and live convinced in some "white guilt" if it makes you feel better tough. Counter question - why des it even matter? It's not like there is some global fixed supply of "that stuff" that has to be balanced. "Hmmm..I made 3 jokes about Jews today. That means I have to make 3 about blacks and 3 about white. Oh, and 1 about Irish." -

I don't recall ever telling you in this thread either my race, my sex or my financial status. But let's for a second assume you are right. So what? That doesn't make you right. I don't think you are even aware what the word "institutionalized" means. Because quite frankly, it's the opposite. It's the minorites and spaceial groups that are protected by the state (and other institutions) to an often redicolous degree. So please, tell me how this institutionalized racism is supposed to work when the state is enforcing Political Correctness with the zeal religious fanatics could envy.
