Attributes - Fixed or Increasing?
TrashMan replied to Cultist's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
1) You could, but you wouldn't. Your'e not forced into anything, so I dont exactly see your point there. 2) That's actually a problem with the D&D armor system. In PE armor doesn't make you harder to hit, meaning dexterity/agiltiy is important fo fighters too. An extra layer of defense if you will. Imagine a high STR, high DEx fighter in full plate. What he cannot doge, he can absorb/deflect. Scary. 3) There's nothing wrong with medicore scores really. It stands to reason that not all stats will be equalyl usefull for all profeessions. However, who said you have to build a cahracter that is focused so narrowly only on his profession? Charisma is not importnat for a warrior IN COMBAT... but out side of combat it could be usefull. I get what you are saiyng, altough trying to do for everything also feels aritificial. Would critical be determiend by DEX and INT? If so, by what formula? Equal share? It would have to be some pretty weird fomula if you want to force a player to invest equally. You would again run into the problem of balance, where favoring one stat will yield better results. And I have no problem with that really. My philospohy - go with what makes sense and FRAK everything else. -

If it has some use then it's not a dump stat. You'll be really hard pressed to find EQUALLY valid use for EVERY stat for ALL classes. It's just silly. It doens't have to be perfectly balanced. It's a RPG. If I want to "gimp" myself or play a unortodox build, then let me. As a mage, if you have CC spells, then I can see a use for STR as it might increase the potency of such spells as and you can try and build a CC mage. Basicly the STR would act as a modifier. WILL might increase the potency of protection spells. But for a fighter? INT increases critical hit modifiers? I dunno. When you try to balance it like that, it ends up feeling fake. Artificial. I think iz goes without saying that I prefer realistic attributes over "gamey" ones -

To me the issue is when an attribute is so fundamentally useless for any single class that every build will minimize it, there's very little point in including it for that class. Ideally most attributes would be relevant to every class, and the game would ensure that different allocations actually support different playstyles. A complete dump stat like luck is also rather pointless, and if it's already virtually decided where a character will allocate their points based on which class they're playing, why even bother making the player allocate the points? Just to filter out noobs who have no understanding of the system? There will be people who don't care about min-maxing. So for their benefit. Also, to me it just makes sense that some attributes are more usefull for certain professions. A long-distance runner will favor endurance/stamina, while a short distance one might favor agility/leg strength for as much explosive power. I find it kinda self-defeating to try to "balance" what really shouldn't be balanced. How much points a player puts in what attribute is the players decisions. "Optimal" builds depend on what you want to achieve. If you want a charismatic, smart fighter, then you wont' be putting everythnig in STR. -
I don't get why some of you just want a game where every mechanic is meaningless, all in the name of your ideas of "escapism". *** Consequences are fine for me. Re-spawnign monsters is a cheap way, but more effective would be to have enemies re-inforce. You rested? Well, the enemy emptied the armory and are now better equipped. Or most of them converged in the great hall. Or they brought a few reinforcements. Resting is meaningless if there is no UNAVOIDABLE penalty. Random dice-roll monster spawning can be so easily avoided.

Why is being remembered - even in a negative connotation - considered a positive? It's redicolous. Being average is definately better than being bad (and DA2 was average overall) -

Wouldn't that be more the problem of audience not seeing past the physical? Or assuming that any man MUST jump at any attractive woman like a horny animal? Don't get me wrong, I know what you're aiming at and I generally deslike fanservice and oversexualization - especially in anime. -

That starts with the assumption that accurate representation is the goal OR necessary. I personally like acccurate representation, but again - it's not a requirement. It doesn't HAVE to be that way. Fanservice in itself is not bad. Blatant fanservice can tick some people off tough. But it goes both ways. Men like to watch bouncing boobs and the lithe, female form. But don't tell me women don't like firm, hard abs and tonned buttocks. http://now-here-this.timeout.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/Twilight-Saga-Breaking-Dawn-Part-1-Jacob-Black.jpeg -

What retconning? Morrigan was never confermend dead. In witch hunt she falls trough the mirror. Same for Leliana. You defeated her (in a room with magical healing ashes), but her death was not confirmed. And don't even bring up the decapitation animation - I decapitate both Zevran and Howve, yet still managed to recruit one into my party after that and have a nice chat with the other. Anders is a problem. Not only the personality change, but the tomeline makes no sense and given the choices he could be dead, with the templars or traveling with the commander - at the same time as he is in Kirkwall - and never even meeting Justice. -

With BioWare's Revolutionary Proprietary UglyTech® Rendering Technology, We're Now Able To Produce A Staggering 75% More Ugly Characters. * UglyTech is a trademark of BioWare, a subsidiary of Electronic Arts. All right reserved. What is wrong with Morrigan? She loosk good....except the lip syncing which stretches her mouth. But of course, you have to find the worst picture so you can have something to complain about... Also, I odnt' know if you're aware of this stunnign fact, but real people don't have perfect skin. -

It's not a BLUR pre-render, but that doesn't mean anything. In-engine doesn't mean real time. Yes it does actually. And before you try to argue, it has been confirmend that it's is real-time, in-engine with game assets. What you are seeing is recorded "cutscenes". -

You guys do realise that the DA3 trailer was entirely IN-ENGINE? That was NOT a blur pre-render. Of course, not that snazzy new graphics will save DA3 if the story/mechnics end up sucking. -

I see you already have your armor on Always. And thus a dillema. If you are fightign for tolerance but are intolerant of anyone who isnt' as tolerant as you...you aren't really tolerant, are you? Hence why, if I'm "fighting" agaisnt such pointless debates by poisting in such a debate... which is another complaint in itself....am I really fighting it? -

Welcoem to the internet - where verything and everything will be turned into a massive social issue and people will fight over it like petulant children. -
Biggest steaming load of bollocks ever. Do you know what policemen will tell you to do, if you are apprehended by the police when you have done nothing wrong? Don't tell them anything. They just want to ask you a few questions! They don't think you did it! Oh, it'll be okay! No, don't say anything. Any and every innocuous, innocent, even noble thing that you do in your life can easily be turned into something scandalous, incriminating, sufficiently suspicious, when under the close eye of people who are trained to look for suspicious things and have some reason, whether right or misguided, to think you may be suspicious. Why should we now live our lives by the maxim that "you should live so cleanly and unambiguously that no amount of secret surveillance upon every aspect of your life will incriminate you, and if you don't, then it's bloody well your fault that they're now probing up your buttcheeks"? It's nonsense. I don't think he meant you have ot live the life of a pure saint. Just that if you're a normal guy not doing anything illegal, there's really not much to worry about. If people are actively trying to find something or falsifying evidence to incriminate you, then you've got a LOT bigger problem on your hands,

Attributes - Fixed or Increasing?
TrashMan replied to Cultist's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
I find it simpler to blance so that NOT having an attribute sufficiently high is a problem. If types of attacks that are defended against with attribute X are frequent enough, then not having decent scores in that attribute gimps EVERY character. Willpower for a barbarian? Get charmed, stunned, confused often. Also, is it really necessary to completely avoid min-maxing and dump stats? It can lead to some fun characters too, and there are characters out there whop are...not well-rounded. -

Attribute range from1-20 hits a sweet spot with me. 1-10 is barely enough and anything lower just lacks destinction betwen characters or requirements. Anything over becomes too cumbersome and increases too redicolous. -

I don't know if anyone actually measured bruces strength, but as any active martial artist, it is safe to assume he was pretty strong (for his size). Now, there are a few exceptional individuals who are born with a fluke so that they can use far higher percentage of muscle fibers than a normal man. They are literaly 3-5 times stronger than a normal human, but run a very high risk of breaking their bones or ripping their muscles.
