Inventory management
TrashMan replied to rjshae's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
I prefer separate inventories. If a party memebr is out cold, I shouldnt' be able to acess the stuff in his backpack. Some may say that doing that means a chore in switching items between party memebers, but I say that is not the case. You can display the backpacks of all party members in a single screen, with the pack of a knock-out or out-of-range party memeber being grayed out. You have ease of acess with logical and tactical limitations. -

Aerie is rather squishy early on. But if you build her properly later she becomes an unstoppable juggernout. I gave her the belt of constitution and crom Faeyr and the shield of harmony (?) and combined with her spell arsenal, she can ruin entire armies. -

"In the name of X"? Pointless. People ultimatively kill eachother because they are stupid, greedy f***. Religion has got nothing to do with it. -
You will find that in combat with weapons, and with helmets, grabbing someones hair is very, very, very, very difficult. Long hair can go into your eyes, but there are simple ways to fix that. The part of the body that is easiest to hit and will have most attention is the torso. Always was, always will.

**** Just finished watching Mushihi. It's a strange and surreal anime. Kinda sad and disturbing (in a horror kind of way) at times.

Beyond good and evil

Computers have math. They aren't really capable of inteligence. Any logic outside of strict maths is something they can't deal with. -
That your avatar is an armour that presumably you think looks cool rather than one which offers protection, a blow which would have otherwise missed could potentially break the wearers neck.... therefore I assume you don't want to see anything like it in the game My avatar isn't in the game. Nor have I asked for it. Yes, I think it looks cool. No I don't think it would be a good armor choice (unless the wings are actual feathers and thus weigh almost nothing and wont' catch a blade, in which case it would be OK) No I'm not against having some rare boobplate armor or codpiece armor. I'm against such armor having actually good protective value. So if oyu want your character in a chainmail bikini, you can have it...as long as you accept the consequences. Don't assume to much.

Allow us to fail Quests!
TrashMan replied to JFSOCC's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I actually think a few quests (or quest stages) like this should be there. Some chance and randomness are part of combat - is having even a tiny bit of it in quests that bad? Just make reprocussions sensible. Quest faliure doesn't mean an end to everything. You done 4 quests for the brotherhood and failed the 5th? Well, that shouldn't halt your progress. You'd have to really screwing things up for a faction to kick you out completely. -

Design a monster.
TrashMan replied to JFSOCC's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Bronycholus A monster resembling a vaguely humanoid miniature horse, with highly irregular proportions. When standing fully upright, they are on average shorter than a human. They come in various, vibrant colors and usually with strange, occult marks on their rear leg. Some have horns, some have antlers, some even have a single, long horn - but they all have long manes. While the main is usually single-colored, some individual Bronycholuses have been reported to have multi-colored manes. The unfortunate traveler that walks into their midsts will find himself under the diabolical effect fo their aura - he will become more and more docile and open to suggestion, ultimatively becoming a slave and eventually host. They poses disturbingly oversized eyes with huge retinas that grant them excellent night vision. Legends say that if one looks into their eyes too long, he can see the endless black void and his soul is sucked out forever. The empty shell is then inhabited by it's progeny. The unfortunate host will mantain it's human apperance for a while, but the body will evantually change and turn into a full Bronycholus. Before that happens, it will attempt to use it's apperance to trick or lure more victims. Bronycholus are physicly not very ressilient, but poses significant strength, especially in their lower legs. Combined with their hornes, they can make a deadly adversary if underestimated. The more powerfull among them posses magical powers, usually in the form of limited telekinesis, but some can unleash a magical disharge from their horn. The best way to deal with them is pure violence. The adrenaline and rage can fight off the effect of their aura for a while - indeed, some schoolars theorize that it actually hurts them - and all weapons are quite effective at killing them. -

It's also easier to be a hero when there's 100 of you and 2 of them. My beef is more with them taking pictures than anything. -
Food and resting.

No doubt it would prove amazing to make it so detailed,I would first welcome this, but the fear of overburdening the developers with all that still stands. That danger is always there. But there are far older games that did it. I do love those extras tough. It does lead to some "fun" PnP situations. Player: "Ok, we make camp and eat." DM: "You have rations?" Player: "yeah, we have some potatoes with us, so we'll just cook them." DM: "You did bring some pots and pans, right?" Player: "Ummm... no. Can we cook it in a steel helm?" DM: "Only if you take out the padding and ruin the helm in the process. You got flint?" Player: "Frak. We eat them raw then." DM: "You eat the potatos and feel satiated. However, your stomach hurts...because raw potatos." Player: "We sleep it off." DM: "Sleeping bags?" Player: "Dammit, doesn't anyone have a sleeping bag? Tom? Tom has one." DM: "Tom gets a semi-restfull night of sleep. The rest of you can barely sleep at all betwen being uncomfortable, being bitten by bugs and stomach ache." Player: ".... at least it cna't get any worse." DM: "You didn't post guards...it can. I roll the encounter table.... ouch. Ogres attack you. You are caught flat-footed and you get an aditional penalty because you are unrested and basicly poisoned." Player: FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU -

I am talking about those that did stand around and take pictures. That kind of morbid behavior sickens me. And the 2 guys had knives? Pikcup rocks, branches, trashcans. Lets see their knife stop a flying trashcan or a rock to the face. Mah... -

And it is irrelevant wether it allows it or not. I'm putting up the issue of sound game and mecahnics design. "Allow me to play the way I want by brekaing mechanics" doesn't automaticly equal good. It does to you probably. You are equating a game that allows more playstles as automaticly superior, compeltely ignoring what is sacrifices for that. It is. A cheat/test code is NOT part of game design and what is or isn't part is relevant. And no, I said the mere existence breaks the game DESIGN. It will unavoidable break the game for some tough. Think of it this way: I can poke you for the whole day and you could cetanly choose not to poke me back... But will you? Will you be equally engaged in your reading a book as long as I'm poking you? -

The purpose of gaming is to have fun, not to play the game exactly as TrashMan would play his game. One option gives everyone the power to play as they like, the other does not. All this "I win" button crapola you guys keep spouting is just background noise. You play your way, Ill play mine. And what is fun? If the only purpose of hte gmae is to deliver this nebolous, undefined concept of fun, what type of fun do you actually deliver? I ask again - what if I consider clicking the same bottun again and again fun? What if I consider things you hate the most fun? No, no...sadly you are wrong. There are ways games are meant to be played....otherwise there wouldn't be genres in the frist place and no mechanical limitations. Mechanics serve a purpose. Creating a set of mechanics that undermine eachother is bad design. Pure, simple logic. Wether you like it or not is irrelevant and is "background noise". That was a cheat (and for game testing purposes) and not part of the mechanics. Very bad example. -
Codpieces are for show. Empty space - and only several armors that mostly weren't for battle had them. In other words, if you take a blow to the codpiece, you'll likely be OK. They were silly aditions to the armor. I don't mind chainmail bikinies, boobplates OR gigonormeous codpieces in the game....however I will mind if they don't suck in the protection category.

I would say that your analogy doesn't work. Atmospheric music is something that exists outside of the setting and serves no other purpose other than atmosphere. Clothing isn't. Not really Memorable and good are not the same thing, altough they often are. Also the definition of what makes someone a clone is largely subjective. Because The Nameless One looks like a zombie to me...in other words, a clone. If you are really counting on character appeareonce - or even worse, clothing - to make a character appealing, you're doing it wrong.

Temple of Elemental Evil

ToEE was great. Tactical combat and options are unsurpassed. The only thing is lacked was that it felt like dungeoneering. I had the most fun with the game BEFORE entering the temple.
