Coronavirus Goes Fourth
Yeah, this was coming at some point -- it's been predicted for some time; accelerated climate change has just upped the risk. Nations will likely need to set aside a chunk of their defense spending on contagious disease medical technology now. But maybe we'll get some useful advances out of it.

A lot of religious and business leaders have turned on Trump after the riot. He will still have a core of supporters in the Republican party, but many others will view him in a new light after this. I have to think he'd been viewed as an unattractive candidate in 2024 who won't bring out many voters, not to mention he'll now have difficulty trying to attract campaign funding, so that may burn his primary chances.- Funny Stuff: The Phantom Funny

I was thinking this morning: the South finally managed to sack the Capitol. Not really funny, I know. Dark humor.- Politics... US election edition (2020 almost over, read all about it!)
Not really. Short term fluctuations in stock level rarely determine long term success. It's already bouncing up again this morning.- Weird, random, interesting - now with 100% less diacriticals

Funny how the same people who praise capitalism will curse the companies for practicing capitalism. The media companies do what they do to make money (or not lose money).- nfl 2020-2021
It was kind of weird how Pittsburgh seemed to be doing really well for 11 games, and then all of a sudden they weren't. Some strange JuJu, I guess. After that first Pittsburgh play, it just looked like they were in for a long night. It reminded me of a similar play by Denver in the 2014 Superbowl. Anyway, congratulations to Cleveland, and good luck... vs. Kansas City. Yikes.- Coronavirus Goes Fourth
I think your premise is faulty -- it likely only applies to ICU workers and paramedics, not all health care employees.- Politics... US election edition (2020 almost over, read all about it!)

The guy photographed in the Capitol building in tactical gear carrying zip ties has been identified: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9131713/MAGA-rioter-30-pictured-carrying-zip-ties-paramilitary-gear-identified.html Eric Munchel, who was formerly employed at Doc Ford's Rum Bar & Grille in Florida, took part in the assault along with his Mum. 😕 Are these the type of people we'd want running our government? For most people I'd suspect probably not.- Coronavirus Goes Fourth
To be fair, these vaccines are based on a new technology and nobody knows for certain what the long-term effects will be. Many people are understandably a little uncomfortable with having a foreign substance injected in their muscles. Even in the medical field, there are people who are a little uncomfortable with vaccines. That being said, at this point I'll feel relieved to get my booster shot and (hopefully) be fully immunized.- Politics... US election edition (2020 almost over, read all about it!)
I was thinking about an aspect of the Capitol riots yesterday: we supposedly have non-lethal area weapons based on ultrasonic and microwave technology. Why hadn't those been previously deployed to the roof of the building, just in case? Did they just not expect this eventuality?- Politics... US election edition (2020 almost over, read all about it!)
I suspect there's some political pragmatism at work. They'll claim they are targeting 50%, then stall by cutting 5%, primarily to address economic difficulties. But the damage to the city's image is done. Violent crime is up in the city this year, but then it's up everywhere. The bigger concern is the large numbers of camping homeless, who everybody is thoroughly tired of. There doesn't seem to be much to be done about that though.- Politics... Sure. The protesters in Seattle occupied an area of several city blocks surrounding a police station; I think the station itself was just boarded up. I didn't care that much about the situation because I figured it was yet another protest in an area of the city that is more prone to political activistism, and the event would eventually wind itself down. To me, Mayor Durkan's acts seemed intent on resolving the situation with a minimum of bloodshed, so I was okay with a measured response. I know there are those who wanted a more punative action against the protesters, but I think it was mostly resolved peacefully in the end. (There were a couple of unfortunate losses of life, but to me that's on the protesters who drove out the police.) What I really didn't like for was calls by the activists to "defund" the police, rather than reforming it. To me that's an ignorant, self-defeating proposition, bordering on the idiotic. The Seattle police is now suffering morale problems and their people are leaving in droves. Fortunately that hasn't happened out in the suburbs where I live, and I'm okay with that. I do worry Seattle city could become a crime haven. I'm already uncomfortable going downtown these days, such as for jury duty. They need more police, not less. - Funny Stuff: Humour of the Clones
