Politics... US election edition (2020 almost over, read all about it!)

That was my thought as well. Historically, it reminded me of the Beer Hall Putsch. In that case though, the German police responded with much greater use of force. -

One of these things is not like the other. Protest is allowed under the constitution. Rioting and looting is not. Storming the capital building in an attempt to intimidate the government is most definitely not. The mob of morons were okay up until the point where they decided to invade Congress. At that point they should have been met by a hail of bullets. There's a reason why the main streets of Paris are so wide. -

Idiots indeed. Yes it's a head scratcher as to why they got so riled up over what's essentially a fake conspiracy. They're lucky they didn't get mowed down on the capital steps. -

I suspect they more or less rely on their genius overlord to do the thinking. But I'm not really sure that he has thought this through either; he just relies to much on lies and sewing chaos to get his way. -

Well I assume they were trying to disrupt the proceedings. But then it's an army of idiots overdosing on testosterone so they clearly didn't think it through very well. What they potentially could have done is take congress-people hostage, prevent a peaceful transfer of power, and justify Trump declaring martial law. &c. -
Alas, Idiocracy was a documentary.

My concern is with the precedent it sets, in combination with the international image it projects. With more effort and determination they clearly could have succeeded. Next time we may not be so lucky. I think an example needs to be made of the leaders to serve as a deterrent. -

I don't care how "peaceful" it was, the action was unprecedented, reprehensible, and totally unacceptable. I can't imagine there won't be consequences. There was no way to know that the rioters weren't planning something much more severe and the police really dropped the ball in failing to insufficiently protect our government institutions (although they did protect individual members). -

If Trump had the slightest scrap of decency, he'd resign after this fiasco. But if he actually did, this would be a very different presidency and the scene today would never have happened. This is the price we pay for electing a mentally-ill man to the office. I continue to look forward to Jan. 20th. -

I was merely attempting to capture their motivation; certainly they will still be around fomenting their political goals. But without a demagogue to champion their cause, there's not much hope for them to succeed. -

Yes, very likely. The FBI "deep state" should withhold their names until after Jan. 20th. -

Will they be tried on sedition, or some lesser charge I wonder? Me thinks that if Congress hadn't already left the premises then the amount of blood shed would be significantly higher. -

Last hurrah for the far right extremist groups I suppose. They know that once Trump is gone, their brand of bigotry will once again no longer be tolerated. -

The lunatics have taken over the asylum. His hard-core followers are like a physical manifestation of Trump's mental illness. -

Nonsense. I assume you are referring to the "Arab Spring"? That began in 2010. Most of the immigration crisis been driven by the Arab Spring and wars that were started by Bush/Cheney. Remember, Obama was blamed by the right for a significant force draw-down in Iraq prior to his leaving office. -

I keep seeing that prediction being kicked around like it means something. We're already in two wars, inherited from Bush/Cheney. Do you mean a new one? Because eight years of Obama/Biden didn't see us enter a new war, unless you count Syria (which is already related to the Iraq war thanks to ISIS). -

Unlike many people, I can live with a split Congress. At least they can't screw things up too badly. Given the way the Republicans have been behaving with this election though, they deserve a solid kick in the brovaries. -
LA County Paramedics Told Not To Transport Some Patients With Low Chance Of Survival Looks like they are going to rely on paramedics to do an early triage to take the load off the Doctors. Man that job is going to suck.

Today the complex's crew is coming for the mandatory annual check of the fire alarm, and I'm feeling a little paranoid. I mean, they have been to every other residence in the complex... and the air they exhale is going to be hanging in my place for hours. I'd slap open all the windows and ventilate the place, but it's like 40 F(***ing) degrees out. Joy.

Sure. Let me put it this way: I think the only reason we'll (probably) have a peaceful transfer of power right now is that the conditions are not that bad. I mean they suck, sure, but they don't worldwide-depression, end of a world war, runaway inflation, nations collapsing suck. -

One has to always bear in mind that Hitler came to power... via democracy. Many of his methods are recognizable in the current polemic discourse. This type of rabid adherence to lunatic fantasy theories is scary. I'm hoping it will reach a high water mark then recede. But thus far it just keeps getting more stupidly inane. -
Good team systems tend to do well despite the lack of first round draft stock; bad teams often remain so despite years of excellent draft positions. I think it's the later rounds that make the difference between winners and losers. Here's the 2021 draft positions: https://www.nfl.com/news/2021-nfl-draft-order-top-18-picks-set-eagles-sixth
