  1. True dat
  2. Even with an expanding cloud of aerosols, I have to think that the inverse square law still holds at low quantities -- you're going to get four times as much exposure at one meter as you do at two. Granted if an enclosed saturated with viral aerosols then distance isn't going to matter. But that's why ventilation is also important.
  3. The Brain ‘Rotates’ Memories to Save Them From New Sensations Turns out parts of the brain are operating on a whole other level, at the same time. Fascinating really.
  4. It probably didn't hurt that their President is such an intolerant autocrat. It's not like our relations are going to improve any time soon.
  5. Right now we have antiviral drugs for treating more extreme influenza cases. What I suspect the medical community will do over time is develop treatments that make most hospitalizations unnecessary. That will reduce if not eliminate the need for the more extreme quarantine measures we've been employing. We'll just get better at treating it.
  6. The odd part of the last link is how it completely ignores the factor of viral load. You're more likely to get a severe case if you inhale 100 aerosol droplets than if you just inhale one.
  7. I can kind of see LeVar Burton being kept in that role, unlike the other guests.
  8. The funny part is D.C. wouldn't be the smallest state in terms of population. In 1788, it would have been the second largest state in the Union, population-wise.
  9. Most western countries have more stringent gun control measures than in the USA, so policing here is inevitably different. I wouldn't say it's "bonkers"; it's at least partly a response to the threat model. That being said, I don't think it would be harmful for the USA police departments to take a good long look at how they are enforcing the law and see if elements of foreign approaches would be beneficial in terms of reducing gun deaths.
  10. Power attracts the corruptible. That is still true even if you eliminate everybody and start over.
  11. There's a Wikipedia article on how it works: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Missing_square_puzzle Well that was entertaining.
  12. I think the square comes from a slight difference along the diagonal side. There's enough slack in the positioning to cover it.
  13. One wonders if he wanted to be buried in the world's most inaccessible graveyard?
  14. I'll bet he won't get any rest now.
