In world where bullets go through every magical defence that there are, which is reason why even wizard have started to use plate armors, I think that your description is not entirely accurate Maybe low level mages and novices.....at mid to higher levels a bullet "getting through" would likely amount to slightly less than "hahaha, that tickles!!!"....at insane difficulties any kind of protection will probably be a waste of time since the toughest protection ever will likely be almost as strong as wet tissue paper.

Ironically, originally Scarlett was wearing a bikini top in that picture, but so many people griped about it, myself included, that Larian Studios touched up the picture to make it look more like some sort of leather vest. I definitely still have gripe with that armor deign, easily the biggest being the comically gigantic single pauldron, and that goes for Roderick too. I know it's a slightly cartoonish art style, but yeesh! Sorry, comically gigantic pauldrons are a pet peeve of mine. Well that's all awesome and well but I was referring more to this: More like that would be far better.....and I'm perfectly serious here, no sarcasm or any such shenanigans.....armors should be made to resemble the armor in this picture. Magic is far more powerful than any steel or bulletproof material.

I sincerely hope they follow in the steps of inXile and have another kickstarter planned for after PE goes into full production but I think they need to do two things first: launch a pledge fulfillment site for PE and have a gameplay video to show for PE. The video inXile had for wasteland 2 was a killer, didn't just hit the ball out of the stadium but into space. I think these two bits are important: it gives pledgers the sense of safety that obsidian is tracking and cares about fulfilling their pledges while the gameplay video shows raw awesomeness and displays the kind of awesomeness that can be expected from the end product. If they do decide to make this I sure hope a spiritual successor to Arcanum would be next but I would back them in any future endeavor they choose to make through crowd-funding.

Psshhhhh, inXile. Pssshhhh. They don't have MCA. Besides, elements and magic are more in the realm of the gameplay mechanics/design, it's true that the writers will have input on that area, but it's still up to the higher level game designers to actually determine the mechanics and what ultimately comes out of their ideas on magic or elements. It's being helmed by Sawyer so I don't see any problems in that realm of design. Avellone, so far as I know, is just working on writing. So far as I know. Also, I needed to say this: OP, the idea of real-world chemical elements in a fantasy magic game about souls is just absurd. Absolutely ludicrous. Absoludicrous (© Seanbaby.) There's no "magic" in physics and cosmology unless you're using figurative speech about a personal interest and fascination. Actually they do....that's what makes Cyphers unique....didn't you read the updates when the stretch goal adding the cyphers was made? Mind control or at least heavy mind influence is their thing. Ciphers have nothing to do with the absurdity of having real-world modern chemistry and physics in a fantasy world of magic and souls. What are you even talking about? Chemistry? Physics? Real world......have you even READ anything I said? I was talking about MIND CONTROL(MCA)......WHY are you talking to me about something I never mentioned. The quote of my original comment is in your post.....READ it, that'll tell you what I'm talking about.

It was....well the best today's shooter/multiplayer games industry can spit out which isn't saying much at all. I enjoyed it to some degree but all you ever get are mostly fake choices without much impact on things....it's 95% shooter and 5% story. ME3 is 1,000% mindless "YAY MULTIPLAYER!!!" "Story what? Do you know about multiplayer? YAY MULTIPLAYER!!!" "Did you hear about our new multiplayer feature? You can teabag fools!! YAY MULTIPLAYER" You haven't experienced awesome until you played an Obsidian game. Awesome story, great depth and choice....just overall amazing.

The Nuances of Evil
Darth Trethon replied to bojohnson82's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
That's only because we are still largely ruled by animalistic feelings we do not comprehend.....the problem in large is that our "feelings" are chemicals produced by the brain and given the proper motivation your body will react. And thoughts are also a bio-chemical process....so your point? Thse "aninmalistic feelings" are part of humanity and part of the world. Any worldview without them is limited - i'ts basicly not looking at the full picture. You may call it a whole different kind of ignorance. My point is that for as long as these feelings remain a mystery while they have a near total control of our lives the chaos and insanity will continue. Given the amount of violence and horrors in the world it's not inaccurate to say we are insane as a species....we are highly self destructive and we destroy our environment too. We need to gain understanding and control over our feelings....what we do with them next we'll find out when we get there. -

I can't detail specific examples but the adrenaline rush in certain situations can become addictive. The problem to our extreme chaos and self destructive nature is the fact that ultimately most allow their feelings to rule their lives with logic used only to excuse those feelings rather than to keep them in check. But with practice we can learn to diminish their strength and grip over our lives. Ultimately we have to face and understand the mystery that is our "nature" and grow up or we may wipe ourselves out along with most if not all the rest of the life on this planet...and the worst part is that we have the means to do it. -

I think you're completely missing what I'm talking about.....you're seeing a lot more religion that I actually referenced....sure religion is the most handy example of blind belief and certainly encompassed by what I was saying but there's a lot more to that topic than you seem to see. It surrounds all things people accept on faith....such as that your clinic and doctors mean you well or the rather large issue of customs and behaviors......in fact one of the prime examples that came to mind when I mentioned people being disowned by their families and social retribution is a friend who lives in an area where it's very dangerous to mention you support a different political party than the status quo....as in an issue of life and death dangerous. But since you took the focus to religion, yes, religious faith has been and remains a key manipulator of people in the extremely poor and more desperate areas of the world where education is scarce and in many cases even suppressed....it's easy to forget there's a lot more to the world than the countries where people can afford computers. When life is a living hell and you are at the mercy of the ruthless there's no future or goal to hope for than what happens when you die. But my goal isn't to eliminate beliefs but rather to encourage that such beliefs be developed through extensive critical thinking and the facts available at hand.....and above all being open to new but solid and conclusive information. I don't even see how you missed this since reasoning has been my key focus since I started posting. I'd give plenty of wonderful examples of what happens when you accept things on blind faith(not just religious) but such things are frowned upon. All in all a lot less faith and a whole lot more reasoning would be an enormous improvement along with a lot more questioning of motivations and increased self understanding of ourselves and our species. And I see no point to living in regret and self criticism....if something is correct logically and leads to a more favorable outcome(and not just for the self) than the non "morally repugnant" there is something wrong with the morals. These thought patterns that are just about hardwired into us since infancy are difficult and painful to overcome but they are also at the very root of most of our problems because they teach one thing, imply many unpleasant and fear inducing(not to mention contradicting) things without much of a logical reconciliation that makes any kind of sense. Hence why regret and heavy self criticizing and punishment are highly encouraged. -
Cyphers will bring mind control with them....and will probably be the only class I ever play. Still I am fairly certain Obsidian will go well outside of the realm of everything that's been done before with this game....at least with the story. There are no greater storytellers out there than Obsidian(except maybe inXile) so when they say they want to keep the story completely under wraps until the game ships you know it's going to be mind blowing.
-
I'm not worried, I know Obsidian will deliver big time. I rather they take the time to make the best game ever though the competition mounted by the Torment: Tides of Numenera game that inXile is Kickstarting as we speak looks nearly insurmountable but even IF PE ends up being only the second best game ever we'll all still be VERY happy indeed....and that is a very big IF.

Update #46: How (Proto-)Typical
Darth Trethon replied to The Guildmaster's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
George answers this concern on Formspring: http://www.formspring.me/GZiets/q/434424012253185870 Level design? In the 5th update for Torment: ToN they specifically refer to him joining the writing team and that his writing will enable them to increase the depth of the game. Now I'm confused....is he drawing maps or writing? I hope they didn't have any misunderstandings or miscommunication that will cause problems for one or both games.- 98 replies

The Nuances of Evil
Darth Trethon replied to bojohnson82's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Letting go of all you have been taught to be true is painful....VERY painful. You lose sense of purpose and direction and there is no invisible man with a plan where all the horrors and monstrosities have a purpose that is somehow meant to all end up good, your childhood heroes become parodies of the denial everyone is content to live in....it takes time to get over but when you do you can make your own path. It's hard to question something when everyone you know has believed without question since you were born and all you've ever been taught is blind belief.....have faith. The more you look the more questions there are and even fewer answers.....facing reality is perhaps one of the most brutally painful things someone can suffer emotionally.....to know and understand the details of the horrors people inflict on each other with most wars being fought over some belief or another because neither side could cope with reality, so they blindly wanted to believe but some part of them had been touched, shaken by some knowledge they could no longer suppress....that all they knew was a lie. So they threw themselves into combat in the belief that killing the perceived "enemy" would somehow make things right again....that it would please their deity. What makes things even harder is social retribution.....offend someone and there can be legal punishment, in some societies you can face being disowned by your family or worse. Reminds me of how people who didn't believe the earth was flat used to be treated....mentally unstable, dangerous to society. We have developed a pattern that suffocates critical thinking....a species that refuses to own up and grow up....this may be well why we are so insanely troubled and destructive. We don't reason and let go of the lies....we get violent and ego takes over because we feel our sense of identity....that which we believe ourselves to be...is threatened. Basically we get violent because our sensitive feelings get so very hurt. And it only gets harder with time because you've spent more time blindly believing which has made the beliefs plant even deeper and stronger roots on one's sense of identity. Reminds me of a childhood story....something to do with a young duck that was afraid of drowning that ultimately overcame the fear by holding a hook which it believed anchored it to the sky....now imagine that it never learned otherwise and grew old and passed that belief to future generations and everyone accepted it on faith. Trying to explain to them the hook did nothing and was merely extra weight would be met with hostility....because how could everyone be wrong?? You must surely intent to get them killed. That's more or less where people are....thousands upon thousands of blind beliefs all trying to distance themselves from the bad actions of the others while teaching the same thing and reading from the same book. -

George Ziets has also been successfully added to the Torment: ToN via the most recently reached stretch goal....how will that affect Project Eternity. You guys are about to start production as inXile will soon start pre-production.....will George just up and quit Project Eternity when production starts? My understanding is that the heavy writing happens in pre-production...but still, you are looking at potentially have a writer just up and leave when you may still need him.- 98 replies

The Nuances of Evil
Darth Trethon replied to bojohnson82's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
We're only expecting the devs to resolve issues where we as a species haven't resolved yet. Nothing more difficult. Devs? One already said examples weren't welcome and there have been none after....beyond that there is no further issue with the discussion afaik. Some people have been really sheltered and some of the less pleasant details of reality may be shocking. And the answer to the good and evil question is that the worst thing we can possibly do is presume we know it. I find it interesting how you assert that "the worst thing we can possibly do is presume we know [good and evil]", when you present your own account as revelations of objective "reality". Seems legit. Things are what they are, nothing else. We can be wrong but reality does not change and if we pay attention, use reason and avoid assuming what we do not know it's not that hard to find a reasonable course of action based on available information....I see it as practical. This is nowhere remotely close to presuming to know all about what's good and evil.....sometimes actions that people judge as "evil" are needed.....that judgement is where they fail. Circumstances should dictate decisions not some set of silly morals and invisible power figures that you fear because somebody else told you to. -

The Nuances of Evil
Darth Trethon replied to bojohnson82's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
That's partially because of self-validation and the need to actually have a firm stance on some things. All of us MUST have some firm footing, some fundamentals that we can cling to. And this extends more than just the physical (like laws of physics). Religion...haven't even started really, there's A LOT more where that came from but it's not all roses and butterflies so I'm not going there. As for the need to have a firm stance....that's perpetuated by the misguided self righteousness.....imagine the embarrassment(and in many cases punishment) for being the only one that doesn't know/accept/tries to break the status quo.....it's a cycle that feeds itself. -
The Nuances of Evil
Darth Trethon replied to bojohnson82's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
The issue of good and evil is far more complicated than what people think they are doing. For every person that wrongly think they are doing good there is another who is right and wrongly judged by society. Talking about the lesbians raped is irrelevant, that's one tiny aspect of a much larger problem that needs to be addressed and solved. At the end of the day it is irrelevant what anyone thinks....we are hardly anything other than a virus spreading on the face of this planet destroying species by the thousands and wearing out the resources of this planet. Look up the global population growth and a little something called exponential growth. Beyond that it really takes a lot of gall to presume one is good when we feast on butchered animals on a daily basis....the amount of misery and suffering we create without thinking anything of it is insane. What we perceive as good are merely foolish ideas based on nothing other than wants and needs....same with our relationships. There are a hundred worse and more urgent situations like murders being committed in the name of that religion so why focus on the lesbians being raped? People focus on what they care about.....someone is afraid of a relative being raped they'll start crying for rapists to all be jailed....if someone is gay/lesbian they'll focus more on lesbians being raped rather than rape in general....to think of how horrible it is not to be able to scream your sexuality to the world. Nevermind the murders....nobody I give a damn about falls under the religious criteria for being killed on sight, nevermind the issue of priests of the world's largest religion raping children, I'm not taking mine to church anyway. And on and on and on....we sure love to think of ourselves as good and whatever else but ultimately that is all we ever do....think of ourselves....and too few see the real problems and should they say anything about it they are vilified. Talking about religion is taboo by law....god have mercy on you if you offend somebody's beliefs. At the end of the day most people are sexually insane regardless of gender or orientation....sex is a lot less about reproduction and a lot more about satisfying instinctual animistic desires we really do not comprehend....or for that matter care to comprehend. This too is a core problem that is probably much larger than religion or politics. Everyone is busy playing victim after they or someone close suffers something and even then they are unwilling to look at address the real diseases. It's like trying to make fever illegal without trying to even look at even one of the hundreds of disease that cause fever or how these diseases are contacted. The biggest problem of all as I see it is how self righteous humans are in their nearly infinite ignorance.....how certain we are that we know right and wrong. It's pathetic really. -
The Nuances of Evil
Darth Trethon replied to bojohnson82's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
For one you're not looking at the real problem....you won't be able to teach those men differently or convince them otherwise unless you recognize and address the real issue which is their culture and religion. Then even if you somehow did convince them otherwise the problem remains that there are likely another 100 extremely wrong things done in the name of that religion that you are ignoring or unaware of. You can't treat the symptom without curing the disease. This is sort of an extreme example but nuances similar is varying issues can be found in all cultures. But alas this is NOT the topic, this thread is about the way we perceive and define what is evil rather than about rape or men raping lesbians to turn them straight.
