Two weapon style (dual wield)
80Maxwell08 replied to nerevar's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
Honestly I voted for both "weapons can be same size" and "weapons don't have to be same type" but I don't need them to get to insane levels. I don't need or want to have a greataxe in one hand and a halberd in another. Still if they are within some form of reason then why not? Why not have someone have an axe in one hand to cut and a sword in his other hand to stab? Especially if the character fits. The example I gave could be for a character with low intelligence or who didn't grow up in a city so he just did what sounded smart to him. -
forced party member poll
80Maxwell08 replied to Michael_Galt's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
Obsidian has mentioned that none of the companions will be forced on to the player and it's fully possible to beat the game solo if you desire. Though after actually reading you weren't even asking about that. Personally I just don't care too much unless the character is really annoying. -
When I opened this I thought you were talking about having different quests depending on character builds. I'n not very good at guessing. On topic I agree with you. I don't mind some quests not being available depending on certain classes or races but I certainly don't want quests that are unsolvable. If I can't do the quest it shouldn't give it to me. I am a bit curious how a quest would be impossible considering having different companions and the adventurer's hall though but is it right to force someone to use those even for side quests? Maybe if you talk to the quest-giver they should say something about you not having the right skill they need or talking to themselves about how they wish someone who could sneak around or bake.

A text heavy game
80Maxwell08 replied to molarBear's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Honestly I don't disagree with your point but allow me to try arguing against it. Icewind Dale didn't have a story focus because Josh Sawyer only had a weekend to write it compared to the several weeks that games like Planescape Torment and Fallout had. In terms of Baldur's Gate I have yet to play a Bioware game that managed to have any deep theme or use morality outside black and white. For Planescape I haven't heard a single person defend the gameplay even from the people who made it. Avellone said the D&D rules basically got in the way of their dialog focused gameplay. I'm not saying you are wrong but I'm saying it may have a better chance than you think. -
Well along the coast, originating from an off-map non-visitable land or island. Or maybe the pirates are based in a cove on the mainland and are powerful enough to keep themselves from being conquered and driven off. They might sail along the coast raiding villages and such. If that's the case then why wouldn't they be trying to form their own city and making their own civilization instead of continuing to be pirates if they have so much power. Also if no one can stop them then chances are there wouldn't be any villages by the coast or there would be massive harbors that they would have no chance against. My problem isn't with them existing but the game doesn't look like it was designed with gameplay in large bodies of water in mind. I don't want something being forced in just because.

Let's talk about the map
80Maxwell08 replied to WDeranged's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
And so did Saint Xantomas free Maiden Falls of the foul daemons that dared to disguise themselves in the form of beautiful women. There to wipe away the memory of such horrible acts did he open the greatest brothel this land has ever known. Thus did he work day and night building and on the last day he casted his most powerful holy magic to turn the waterfall into a place of healing where wounds and diseases were wiped away. Truly will his deeds will be remembered with the highest reverence and respect. A long time ago lived a woman next to the Maiden Falls, her fair features were of such great renown that many still believe the place's name is in her homage. But that isn't true: the woman killed herself upon hearing the death of her lover, it was then that wicked spirits took her form and haunted the area. For a long time they seduced travellers into falling from the top of the waterfall, but Saint Thomas' passing during a famous spiritual journey purified the place and slew the demons without bloodshed. Ever since, the people of Maiden Falls are dedicated to the memory of that journey - turning the place into a tourist trap and a brothel. As it turns out Virtue doesn't sell. I propose hijacking this post and turning it into creative stories behind the map location names. Lake of Drowned Tombs. Named so because it's original name was Lake of Drow Tombs and then someone realized that put them within lawsuit reach of Hasbro/WotC. Oh I think I got a better one. Echo Bay. One day an explorer named Enam Chonfer Orfen found this place after a long week of travelling. Exhausted he stopped and sat down and said "I need some rest". Miraculously he heard it being said over and over, each time being more faint than the last. "Is someone there?" He said and again he heard it multiple times. He sat there talking to himself marveling at what he was hearing. Nowhere else had he ever heard something like this. He decided to give this wonderous place a name and named it after his initials. What he failed to notice the entire time was the bandit several metres away hiding behind a rock who decided to screw with him instead of rob him. -

You do realize the ouroboros is fairly common in mythology right? Also if this has to do with wheel of time why aren't red eagle games announcing it and obsidian linking to it since they would only be helping not leading? Do we know how much Obsidian is involved? Perhaps the project's evolved to the point where it's mainly Obsidian. Seems like a fairly clear correlation between the prominent logo and the fact Obsidian is working, at least in some capacity, on the WoT game series. The quotes don't seem to have much to do with the novels, though, but who knows at this point what it's going to be. If it evolved to it being mainly Obsidian then why did Red Eagle run the kickstarter with another company, Jet Set games, and not mention Obsidian at all? Also Obsidian aren't really mobile developers -

When did they say that? Maybe they changed their minds. Maybe they found something like high fantasy that interests them. If it quacks like a duck and walks like a duck... I think Chris Avellone said it on his blog and I also think someone linked an interview with George Ziets here where he said both Avellone and Sawyer said they disliked high fantasy and whatever they were working on wasn't high fantasy. EDIT: It appears I read it wrong with Sawyer but I know Chris said he didn't like the concept of high fantasy. -

Except both Chris Avellone and Josh Sawyer hate high fantasy. Chris said he wanted to make a game that turned high fantasy on it's head once though it looks a lot like Sawyer is going to be the lead on this one. They could both agree to do that though. Sounds like high fantasy to me. I wasn't arguing what it sounds like I'm saying none of the available heads want to do that. If it turns out to be high fantasy then fine but I'm just saying both of them have said numerous times they don't want to do high fantasy. -

Baldur's Gate 3?
80Maxwell08 replied to projectx's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Except Trent Oster went to Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast about Baldur's Gate 3 and they turned him down as well unless he could give them proof that the name would still sell. Also Chris Avellone has said that no one he knows from the original Black Isle is working there. -

Doubtful considering everyone is currently working on something. The most vocal person about doing a Kickstarter is Chris Avellone and he's stated if he's going to do one it won't be until Wasteland 2 is done. Doubtful? Maybe. But keep in mind Kickstarter takes a while to execute and then gather funds, and you don't need a lot of people just to start pre-production. With South Park SoT cycling down sooner rather than later, there's no reason not to look forward on this now. Seems like a safe assumption. There's still months to go on the South Park game however and so far that's the closest game to release. Also I heavily doubt they would run a kickstarter when no one is available to work on it. EDIT: Granted I have no idea what Josh Sawyer is doing so if that Black Hound project can somehow relate to this then maybe. -

If you're heading up a Kickstarter, let us know if you want help.

Sorry to jump beyond off topic on this Chris but please check Trent Oster's twitter now. https://twitter.com/#!/TrentOster/status/193148007288545280 Look for a few posts down on him talking about if he was going to do something new with Planescape. EDIT: Well I sound a little overexicited on this. So it's not that urgent but do please check it soon anyway. Also I edited my link to go directly to the tweet. -
Well I like Obsidian a lot too. I have since KOTOR 2 which I like even more than the first. I still need to beat Obsidian's best works (Mask of the Betrayer and if you count this from Black Isle Planescape Torment) but so far I have liked all of their games. Still a word of advice don't have an "it" company at all. Listen to what people say since regardless of what some of the internet says if people actually have problems with a game they aren't just hating on it. Still glad to hear you had a good experience with Alpha Protocol. I need to play that game some more. I have it installed right now but haven't done much with it.

Can we get a projected date on a kickstarter?
80Maxwell08 replied to 80Maxwell08's topic in Obsidian General
Ah well that all makes sense so thanks for that post. Especially the part about Kickstarter changing your rules. I do know that people won't be getting as much money from kickstarter as from being funded by an actual publisher. I do think Obsidian would be able to get a good amount of money at least around the level Double Fine has but that still wouldn't be much compared to an actual budget by a publisher. Still I hope they do one since Obsidian has the worst luck with publishers. -

Well now my May suggestion has been taken by someone else. Tex Murphy is going to be doing a Kickstarter on May 15. Well I got nothing. -

80Maxwell08 replied to 80Maxwell08's topic in Obsidian General
Agreed but I don't want them to start it tommorow just say they will or will not and maybe say a date. Personally if they are going to it I would say they should do it in May since right now they have quite a bit of competition for money. March has Tales of Graces F, Mass Effect 3, the Wasteland 2 kickstarter and April has Xenoblade Chronicles and The Witcher 2. I can't think of anything in May so that seems like quite the opportune moment to do it since right after May comes Darksiders 2 and The Last Story. Agreed there too though I should edit that into me first post now that I think about it. I thought I put that there. Huh it appears I can't edit it though for some reason.
