  1. This has been stuck in mind for a while recently. I still recently remember feeling chills the first I heard it. Maybe my memory is playing tricks on me but I think Dusk... and her Embrace was the first black metal album I heard from start to finish.
  2. If by "review our immigration policies" you mean let's create systems that help integrate adult migrants into society, that help avoid the creation of immigrant ghettos, and that focus on the effective education of the children of immigrants, sure, I agree with that. If by " review our immigration policies" you mean close the borders, then no, that's plainly stupid. If there are pressures that create large population movements between countries, be it war, climate, crime, or whatever, people are going to move across borders, whether you want them to or not. https://comparativemigrationstudies.springeropen.com/articles/10.1186/s40878-020-00213-1
  3. Immigration is inevitable and it will become increasingly more inevitable in the coming decades. Europe will be flooded by refugees whether we like it or not. So you either prepare for the people that are coming accordingly, or pretend "closing" borders and sticking your head in the sand will solve the problem.
  4. Jean-Luc Godard died, at 91. I was actually surprised to learn he was still alive. Here's Jean Seberg in À Bout de Souffle.
  5. The party of small government strikes again. https://www.spglobal.com/marketintelligence/en/news-insights/latest-news-headlines/texas-bans-10-banks-348-investment-funds-over-fossil-fuel-policies-71842914
  6. A variation of the old "I enjoy participating in gatherings with racists, but I'm actually not a racist" conundrum. A common companion of "how can I be a racist if I have a black friend" and "how can that guy be racist if black people voted for him." I'm sure there were some German dudes at the rally of freedom in 1935 who just really loved freedom.
  7. It was a big thing here in Sweden when she died. Cancer, I think.
  8. OK, I'll give you that but that is really minor. Sounds a bit like propaganda. See, abhorrent.
  9. DeSantis seems like a pretty abhorrent dude with the abhorrent policies to match, with a strategy specifically designed to appeal to rabid trumpers. So, politically, it is like you are asking people if they prefer Trump with more or less orange smear.
  10. I'm more interested in knowing if we retain our tastes and interests. Would that mean heaven for one guy would be painting warhammer miniatures? What about a heaven for furries? Or BDSM. Or people who just love creating RPG rulesets. Anyway how does pleasure and happiness work without dopamine?
  11. It's also why Jewish people in the middle ages in Europe controlled banking. They were allowed to loan money at an interest to non-Jews while Christians could not at all. Also I don't have a citation for you, but I believe the timing of the church realizing there was money to be made in loans, and the timing of renewed Jewish prosecution in the late middle ages coincided somewhat.
  12. More fun stuff for Gromnir to comment on: The Clarence Thomas Cinematic Universe The post-legal Supreme Court By fun I mean not in any way good for anyone. @Gromnir
