  1. The "33" is the number of words in the pledge. When the family was thinking of what they wanted the bottle to say, they had a bunch of drafts. The one they liked was composed of 33 words, and whoever wrote the draft wrote the number of words underneath it. That's how they sent it to the printer, and when the bottles all came back with 33s on them, a Depression-era new business was not about to just toss them. Or at least that's how the story seems to go. Edit: And a fried bologna sandwich, with melted cheese. Mmmmmm.
  2. Fantastic song. That's on Small Change, right? Crowded House - Don't Dream It's Over
  3. Wynona's Big Brown Beaver was a great song. Tom Waits - Blind Love I think Keith Richards sings backup and plays guitar on this one.
  4. Yeah. I wrote a column about the whole thing for the paper. It's funny, they want us to write columns every few weeks, but there's only a few things I'm passionate enough about to write 800 well-thought-out words on. Music, obviously, is one. Video games are another, and beer is a third. I basically whined about how A-B is bankrupting the city of Latrobe by doing this, as well as destroying one of the last independent successful breweries. Then I went into the whole history of the mysterious "33" on the bottle. It was fun and a few people took the time to write me on it, so that was cool.
  5. ^ That is a question better left unanswered. Beer. Does that count? It's Rolling Rock, Latrobe's finest (and only) beer. At least until Anheuser-Busch moves their production at the end of July. I've boycotted those bastards for stealing the quirkiness of my favorite summer beer.
  6. What caused the change? Besides the music of Johnny Cash?
  7. I picked up a Wolfmother EP last spring. I think it was a precursor to a full-length for them. Either way, they're a throwback to 70s metal a la Sabbath or Zeppelin (but mostly Sabbath). Anyway, I'm listening to Bruce Springsteen's crazy folk-rock ensemble tackle these old Pete Seeger songs. He uses the horn section from the Max Weinberg 7.... so La Bamba plays trombone on the CD! Well, that was cool to me anyway. Springsteen & company - Erie Canal
  8. Ha, no they never do, do they. I suppose that makes them the "coolest" though, right? Bruce Springsteen - Lost in the Flood (live) Everybody's wrecked on Main St. From drinking unholy blood
  9. I really wanted to listen to my Danzig CD on 6-6-06, but I forgot. Well, there's a chance that'll never come again, ha. NOFX - Freedom Like a Shopping Cart
  10. I second the "Monterrey is beautiful" comment. Check out the sea lions by all the shops on the wharf. They have a really nice marina too, with sharks, eels and all sorts of fishies. For something less touristy, go to Carmel and pretend you're one of those rich bastards who lives there. Wasn't Clint Eastwood the mayor of Carmel for a while? Oh, and San Francisco is one of my coolest cities in the world. Get breakfast at Mama's and if you want to really fork out the cash, get dinner at Scoma's on the pier.
  11. There's a version of that song on the Beatles anthology that is head and shoulders better than the final album version, IMO. Instead of a subdued solo, George just rips it up. He has a few more flourishes throughout the song on that version too. Buckcherry - For the Movies Yes, I know it's cheesy, and I really don't care. Also, Baley inspired me to dig out Ultramega OK from my collection and I gave that sucker a full play while driving today. Man, Soundgarden would have been a lot different if Kim Thayil wrote all the songs. Whatever happened to that guy? Far as I know, the only thing he did after Soundgarden broke up was a few songs with the Presidents of the USA and a crazy collaboration with Sean Kinney, Krist Novoselic and Johnny Cash on a Willie Nelson tribute album.
  12. Yes. I was cruelly tricked into eating one. While I was up either getting more wings or hitting the john, my "friends" dropped one into my nest of medium or BBQ wings. You can feel the heat coming off that chicken wing as you raise it to your mouth. They're too spicy to be good, IMO.
  13. Back when cell phone ringtones didn't try to approximate the actual songs and were glorified midi files, "Take on Me" was one of the best ones I ever heard. The Rolling Stones - Wild Horses
  14. I suppose I'll lose TOMBS points for this, but there is such a thing as the Quaker Steak and Lube, and they do serve food there. It used to be good food, too, that Ohio residents would drive across the border for, but that changed some time between my senior year of high school and my freshman year of college. We used to put up with a million high school kids to get wings on AYCE wing night, but then the wings started to suck, so there was no longer a reason to go there. So, at least this time, Mothman was NOT at a gay bar. (not that there's anything wrong with that) Anyway, I'm eating one of those enormous Subway party subs, purchased in honor of my last day at this job of mine.
  15. Here's a picture from my rock and roll days. Halloween 2005 was the last show I played with these guys. I'm on bass on the far left.
  16. Isobel is actually my favorite Bj
  17. Specifically, "My Old Friend the Blues." That old blacksmith does look like he's ready to tear up a little. And if there ever was an embodiment of the Marlboro Man, it looks like Townes could be it.
  18. Nice beard, Laozi. Nice...barren landscape as well.
  19. Haha, actually I had to go cover a freaking flood and I just got back. My last day on the job and I'm working barefoot with rolled up pants that are still dripping dry. So much for doing nothing all day. Anyway, I suppose I should listen to.... Stevie Ray Vaughan - Texas Flood or maybe Led Zeppelin - When the Levee Breaks or maybe CCR - Who'll Stop the Rain Edit: I swear I saw a Wilie Nelson avatar. I swear it!
  20. I will check that tribute stuff out this weekend, when I'm at a computer with the internet and speakers that is less than 10 years old. I popped in the self-titled Frank Black and the Catholics album today. In my last band, I was shooting for that album's guitar tone. It's this blessedly raunchy, yet somehow bright, distortion that just cuts through the mix like a knife through hot butter. It's sooooo good. FB & the Catholics - Do You Feel Bad About It?
  21. My old band covered "Fight for Your Right" at only one show... ... which we played on top of an Olds '88 permanently parked in a friend of ours' backyard. We set up the mixer in the backseat so nobody ran into it. That was one hell of a party. Now that's something I should find for the picture thread. Tom Petty - The Ballad of Easy Rider (Byrds cover, I believe)
  22. That beard looks awesome! :D <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Thanks, haha. It was my "Lemmy" look.
  23. That is some serious headbanging. On everyone's part.
  24. Specifically, the song "See You in Hell." Although the whole album's great.
  25. Hey, my first pic was very happy! It was tough to keep a straight face with crazy biker facial hair, but I had to try.
