  1. Yeah, even though he keeps it to just his voice and electric guitar he always gets his message across. It's good that somebody still flies the flag. Fat Mike can't do it alone, ya know.
  2. Billy Bragg - It Says Here A lovely comment on the newspaper business. When you wake up to the fact That your paper is Tory Just remember, there are two sides to every story
  3. And I like the Spit Enz version. I thought it was cool that Ted Leo preserved the original handclaps in his version, although he turns them into snare hits. The Split Enz have an interesting sound, sort of a new-wavey power pop. The Tragically Hip - New Orleans is Sinking Edit for a comment on new post: You know, there's way too much emo/screamo/whatever out there, but I still think that MCR album is good stuff. Those guys can write a catchy punk-pop song about murders, eyeliner and weddings.
  4. It would be a wise decision. DL can atest to the raw excellence of their version of Bjork's "Hyperballad" also on that album. The whole thing really is that good. The cover art is a bit... lewd, however. The Twilight Singers - Strange Fruit (Billie Holliday cover, with Mark Lanegan on backing vocals) Mr. Dulli has said he was challenged to cover the song, and was considering how to do it, when "She's So Heavy" by the Beatles came on - and the light bulb clicked.
  5. Witty! The Atomic Bitchwax - Gettin' Old
  6. Steve Earle - Tom Ames' Prayer Here's the first half of a great story/song. Everyone in Nacadoches knew Tom Ames would come to some bad end Well the sheriff had caught him stealin' chickens and such By the time that he was ten So one day his daddy took a ten dollar bill And he rolled it up in his hand He said "I know you're headed for trouble, son And your momma wouldn't understand." So he took that money and his brothers old bay And he left without a word of thanks Fell in with a crowd in some border town And he took to robbin' banks Outside the law your luck will run out fast And a few years came and went 'Till he's trapped in an alley in Abilene with all but four shells spent And he realized prayin' was the only thing That he hadn't ever tried Well he wasn't sure he knew quite how But he looked up to the sky He said "You don't owe me nothin' and as far as I know Lord, I don't owe nothin' to you And I ain't askin' for a miracle, Lord Just a little bit of luck will do And you know I ain't never prayed before But it always seemed to me If prayin' is the same as beggin' Lord I don't take no charity."
  7. Have you guys heard Halford's "Resurrection" album? I remember picking up a two-song demo tape of it at some concert. It was the title track and the song with Bruce Dickinson, "The One You Love To Hate." Pretty cool stuff, especially the title track, which was killer.
  8. Ripper Owens = The pride of Ohio. He's from Akron, ya know, the Rubber City. Well, him and Michael Stanley. Although I personally am more proud of The Black Keys, Guided by Voices and Cincinnati's own GREG DULLI!
  9. Thanks Bok. Guess not many people around here played it. Seems like it could be a fun game though, and five bucks won't break the bank. I'll probably get it.
  10. As with most tribute albums, that one has great moments and awful ones. The most horrific misstep was probably Adam Sandler howling his way through Werewolves of London. It is actually better than it sounds, but how can you cover Werewolves of London without the piano part? The piano part makes the song!!! For all those pixies fans, Black Francis and company are on the tribute album too - they do "Ain't That Pretty At All." Pink Floyd - The Final Cut
  11. Jeff Buckley - Last Goodbye Fantastic song.
  12. Shenmu 2 is five bucks used for the Xbox at my local video game fence. Is it worth my money (and time)? Notes: I have played a bit of the dreamcast game at a friend's house, and I was impressed. I did not purchase it, however, but then that was before I started playing RPGs.
  13. Yessssssssss..... Matthew Sweet - Winona I needed some calm music the last few days, due to a very hectic weekend.
  14. Matthew Sweet - Nothing Lasts
  15. U2 - Stay (Faraway, So Close!) Feel the groove. It's nice, isn't it? It's also nice when Bono isn't trying to save the world and just writes about love. Example no. 2 U2 - In a Little While
  16. Twilight Singers - There's Been an Accident photo by Joe Del Tufo, 5/31/06, Philadelphia
  17. Also, today I heard "Wonderwall" in a Burger King bathroom. Cake - Alpha Beta Parking Lot breathing in the fumes of so many idling cars right beneath the sign with the dusty yellow star watching the sun go down I wonder if he's talking about Gold Star Chili? Many college campuses have a Skyline or Gold Star Chili-type establishment, often near fraternity houses...
  18. That is some interesting stuff about the falcons. I've been to South Dakota myself on several occasions, but never to the northern lands. I've even got a Wall Drug bumper sticker on my guitar case. My fiancee's brother is stationed at an air force base in North Dakota. He hasn't said much about it, except that it was exceptionally cold in the winter, and he's a Cleveland native, so he's used to cold winters.
  19. I had an all-Oasis weekend a few weeks back. It was so refreshing to hear a song like "Some Might Say" again and say "Damn, nobody's making music like this anymore." I think SA's Dr. David Thorpe said he had heard "Don't Look Back in Anger" on the radio, and it was the best thing he'd heard in a while. Of course, he then followed with how that song is awful and it's a real comment on the state of modern music when Oasis sounds good by comparison. I laugh, because it's funny, but I really do think Oasis is pretty good on their own (until Be Here Now, of course). Tom Waits - Small Change (Got Rained on with His Own .38)
  20. I'm no guidance counselor, but my advice is to intern at a neighborhood weekly-type paper one of your first few years out of high school. They usually need the help, and that way you'll know for sure if it's something you'd want to spend the rest of your life doing. In hindsight, I wish I had done something like that. Academics in college is generally presents the noble profession of journalism, but at an internship you would see the grim realities of the industry. i.e. Let's do another story on the big car dealership doing a renovation, because they're our biggest advertiser. Or let's critique the police force's spending because the chief's been withholding public records.
  21. Those guys are really good, although occasionally depressing. I don't know the song you listed, but I do know a big heartbreaker by them called "She Takes Her Clothes Off." And she said, "I'm gonna be another Marilyn, Bleach my hair, and get real thin, And everybody's gonna wanna dance with me"
  22. Sometimes, like when you get to tell a great story of amazing people beating adversity into submission with a sharp stick, it's worth it. The rest of the time, it's a pain. Awful hours, awful pay, and dealing with lots of people who a) don't trust you or b) want to use you. I never wanted to work for a daily, but like many young idealists, I thought I'd review albums for Rolling Stone. That dream died when I went to college and realized how many people had the same idea. So trade weeklies became the new dream job after a slick internship with a magazine that covered the plastics field. Problem is, the good ones require three years at a daily before they'll hire you. Three years at the daily I currently write for would be like 30.
  23. Ooooooooooh! I've never heard the original. Ted Leo's cover is pretty cool though. the tyranny of distance couldn't stop the cavalier so why should it stop me? i'll conquer and stand free (those may or may not be correct, kinda off the cuff)
  24. I am often nostalgic for my old summer janitorial job at a school. I could just go off on my own for hours and clean desks, shovel mulch or mop floors. Nobody bothered me, I just received my orders at the beginning of the day from the head custodian and did my thing. Now, people are always bothering me. Write a story about this, write a story about that. Write a story about my new business and write it just like this. We need you to get so-and-so to say this particular thing, there's the story. Don't these people know my creativity must not be caged?
  25. Heh, and besides, I wouldn't want them to get too rich so they'd lose their street-cred, now would I? Wilco - A Shot in the Arm
