Pixies fans, Mr. Scott Ford just posted a great 1989 show on his blog: http://fordradio.blogspot.com It's super high quality, definitely a soundboard recording from the early days, so check it out! Cariboooooooooou!

It's just a disaffected bunch of amoral utilitarians trying to invert the political landscape, leaving themselves up higher. So you'r saying that the business of axes etc is just their way of 'getting a head'? I love this joke. Oh yeah, and Yeats FTW!

Yeah, they really fell off in the post-Berry albums. See attached for a really old R.E.M. picture featuring Michael Stipe as Peter Pan and one fantastic unibrow. the Hold Steady - Certain Songs i guess you're old enough to know kids out on the east coast, roughly twenty years old they got coaxed out by a certain perfect ratio of warm beer to the summer smoke and the meat loaf to the billy joel certain songs they get so scratched into our souls

I'm sorrrrrrrrrrrry Actually I love that instrumental break in the middle of that song. Mike Mills comes as close to a rawk star as possible in that bit there. Kings Of Leon - On Call Hey, yeah. I was listening to Eponymous today at work. Now I'm listening to "Blinded" by Third Eye Blind. Before that it was "Mexican Wine" by Fountains of Wayne. Goddamn... I am tired. And the Cavs came so close! Sure, dish it to Donyell Marshall for the last shot, great idea! He's been on fire today! sigh... I really want to go to bed, but I need to turn in several stories tomorrow and they aren't close to being done. Maybe one more half hour of work...

I also occasionally venture out of the music thread to read the work of Cant, the philosopher. ha ha ha... ... But seriously, carry on. I always like to hear about the quirks of different workplaces. One business-type I talked to recently had a slide installed in his company's workplace from the mezzanine to the office floor. It builds company culture and creates a fun work environment, he says.

Today was very cool. The wife and I drove down to my old hometown for my friend's bridal shower. Normally, that's not an event dudes should be within 10 miles of, but apparently it's the hot new trend to have "Jack and Jill" showers. I'm in two weddings this summer, and I'm going to have to go to two of these things. That said, they're fun people to hang out with, and the food was good. Then, later that night, I laid down some bass tracks for my buddy's new CD. This guy is crazy. He calls me up Wednesday and wants to know if I can play bass on some new songs he's going to record. Now, I've played bass maybe twice in the last two years. It's just not much fun to play bass unless you're in a band, and I haven't been for a while. Of course I said yes, because he's a good friend of mine and I love playing music with him, but it's a good thing he writes really easy songs -- I was pretty damn rusty. We did six songs. Here's one right here, brought to you through the miracle of the Internet!

Thanks buddy! This really is a great version of a great song. I haven't watched Pulp Fiction in a long time, but I still remember the soundtrack being very cool.

You mean this one? Sonny Rollins-- I'm an Old Cowhand ^ Awesome. Silly hipsters, low-fi is for kids! I'm listening to a Twilight Singers bootleg from '05. Specifically, a cover of one of the slickest instrumental jams ever ... the coda from "Layla." The bass player actually uploaded the show to megaupload from his site.

I spend a good portion of my day transcribing interviews for my job. I'm young and averse to spending money, so I use a fairly cheap pair of monitor-style Sonys. The cord is much longer than the earbuds I have for my mp3 player, and these big Sonys do a great job with music, as well as voice. Headphones They're basically a step down from LC's Sonys. No, they're not as good as $200 Bose headphones, but you can give the clerk a $20 and get back change. Er, get back shillings... or whatever they give you in jolly olde England.

The stakes weren't quite as high as Wals or LadyCrimson's purchases, but I kind of wish I bought a t-shirt at the concert Sunday. I established a "no more concert t-shirts rule" last year, because I've accumulated way too many t-shirts, and I'm loathe to throw out the old ones. Also, too many bands sell only black t-shirts -- and I'm really sick of black t-shirts. They make me look like some kind of punk or goth, and they attract heat on sunny days. So the band I went to see Sunday had the traditional black t-shirt, but they also had some slick-looking gray and blue ones for $15. I could have been the paragon of indie rock coolness... but I couldn't make myself part with the cash. I did spend $10 on one of their old CDs, but why didn't I kick in an extra buck to get a few stickers for my guitar case? Sometimes my cheapness disgusts me.

The Hold Steady - The Hold Steady - Your Little Hoodrat Friend This concert was awesome. Best $12 I spent on a Sunday night for a long time, that's for sure. Had a few tall cans of Pabst Blue Ribbon and enjoyed a hell of a rock show. They pulled a bunch of fans up on to the stage to rock out with them on the last song, which I thought was pretty cool. My buddy and I looked at each other and thought "What the hell?" So we ended up on stage with the Hold Steady and I high-fived the guitarist as he was letting a big G chord ring out -- what a beautiful piece of fan/musician interaction! Good times were had by all, and although I was a little late to work Monday morning, it was totally worth it.

Yesterday was cool. I went to visit some friends in Cleveland Heights. We went to some funky bars, including one where I got a Kalamazoo Stout, brewed in Kalamazoo, Michigan. It's a thick, creamy stout, brewed with licorice -- which was surprisingly good! Then as the night progressed, we regressed to cheap stuff like Miller Lite. Sigh. It wasn't hard to limit my consumption, which was good, seeing as I had to drive myself and my woman home. Today I did some errands, played a little softball, and had dinner with the mom-in-law.

These "Feist" characters seems to be the darlings of some blogs I frequently read. I've heard that song before, and I do like it. I'll have to give those other ones a listen. Last three: Dr. Dog - Ain't It Strange Giant Drag - Cordial Invitation The Hold Steady - Most People Are DJs Oh, and I'm psyched to see the Hold Steady tomorrow. Fountains of Wayne is coming in early June, and a friend of mine has an extra ticket to see Morrissey next week! This could get expensive...

Piddy sure went on a kick there. Whew, I thought he was gonna get the whole page to himself. Golden Smog - Scotch on Ice off their cleverly-titled new EP "Blood on the Slacks."

I love how that song is so raw yet it somehow retains that pop hook. The Undisputed Truth - Smiling Faces Sometimes Classic motown with a spooky vibe. I like how the girl takes a bit of the verse. "Can ya dig it?"

And here I thought this emergency meeting was called to plan a daring rescue of the esteemed Ms. Hilton from the joint. Also, I was told there would be punch and pie.

Awww yeah! And continuing on the Beatles kick (props for "Sexy Sadie" )... John Lennon - Instant Karma Man, Lennon was such a badass. He always had that edge about him that made him flat-out better than that wanker, Paul. At this performance, they mic'd Yoko Ono. That's normally a very, very bad thing, but here it's just odd. She's not singing, she's knitting... blindfolded. Lennon never fails to amaze me.

Yuengling is great. Some friends of mine once drove three hours to PA to get a keg of it. I'm probably in the minority here, but I'm not a fan of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. And the porter is even worse. Feel free to discount that viewpoint, however, because I just don't like porters. I'm drinking water now. I had a diet Pepsi for lunch, though.

The Beatles - You're Gonna Lose That Girl Ringo gets 10 rock star points for smoking a cigarette during this performance. But, hey, he's Ringo. He could be reading Ulysses, watching the Ed Sullivan show, and doing his taxes during the song -- he'd still turn in a spotless drum track.
