Considering the total number of MMOs and the number of successful ones, I wouldn't get my hopes up for WoD. Also, consider how many of them try to copy WoW and how many don't.(all of those were supposed to be totally different from WoW, guess what happened.)

True but I don't think anyone else had managed to release a sandbox MMORPG as successful (commercially and critically) as EVE in the last five years. So calling them the master is only due credit. Are there actually any other high profile "sandbox" MMOs?

Sure, MMOs are at extra risk because of the long development times and the tendency to get cancelled after being announced.
