Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens

I have to say, that is true. That Stormtrooper was actually rather badass and he also expressed motivations that you could relate to ("You traitor!" doesn't tell you much but it tells you that he feels betrayed by Finn's actions and feels a sense of duty to his comrades enough to feel anger at betrayal). I actually wanted to know more about that guy, it was like "He could have just shot Finn but instead he does an honour duel and kicks his arse at it too, who is this guy?" -
I'm dreaming of a Transhumanist future.

Also, does Harrison Ford have arthritis or something? Bad posture and moves... awkwardly. Didn't he break his leg while/just before filming? I recall something about a garage door landing on it. He's probably walking around in a cast (seriously, they often have actors doing that especially in action films where the actor often gets hurt like Jackie Chan). -

Thorton appears there with Scarlet, Mina, and Sie. Because that's how he rolls. -

Finally got to see it last night, when I took my two nieces and brother-in-law to see it. It was a good film, awesome in fact, or rather it would have been had they not made one fatal mistake that destroyed the entire film and in fact every film ever! Not enough Artoo!! God dam it, two scenes for the one character that the entire film franchise has been about, really? I mean, he is the main character right? -

I am not a fan of the EU, or Legends as it's called now, while I liked the Timothy Zahn books the vast majority of the rest of it was well, let me put it this way: I had to stop reading the first book of the New Jedi Order series because I wanted to knife myself in the face reading it (but then the author was the guy who created Drzz't, so I wasn't expecting much anyway). However, while I don't particularly care for it a lot of other people clearly did and still do, and so while they may be engaged in tactics that some may find distasteful I do not see why they couldn't let writers who want to write for Legends to still do so. As long as they are clearly marked as Legends, I don't see the problem, I mean both DC and Marvel have alternate continuities to their main franchises too (including a Zombie one I was surprised to discover). -
Which games would you like Obsidian to develop the most?
FlintlockJazz replied to Bleak's topic in Obsidian General
Out of those: Bloodlines and Pillars 2. I would love a Pirates-type game with Voodoo-Zombies and monkeys. -
It may be happening sooner than you think. We may be taking the first steps to becoming Transhuman really soon Heh, you wish. I must admit to a desire for this to be true, indeed. Aging may soon be defeated however, there has been a lot of work gone into it recently that is promising some interesting results. It may be happening sooner than you think. We may be taking the first steps to becoming Transhuman really soon, and in a Posthuman future what do you attach 'human' to? "Transmogrification sequence initiated. Gene sample accepted and cloned, please key in new genetic structure." ...and within a generation, all of the type human 2.0 will look like their favourite anime characters. Either that or William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy.

Possibility of Vampire the Masquerade:Bloodlines sequel

Given that everything Onyx Path has touched turned out to be solid gold, I'm somewhat apprehensive about that course of action. Of course it's Paradox's IP now, they can do with it however they please, especially considering they've decided to keep the new World of Darkness line (renamed as Chronicles of Darkness), which I've personally always liked more. Wouldn't surprise me if they try to get the guys from Onyx Path back into WW (considering they are mostly ex-White Wolf employees anyway), or at least into a consulting role. It also wouldn't surprise me if they completely cut off Onyx Path, instead desiring to put their own stamp on the game and not be bound to the old guard. -

I've been umming and ahing about backing this. I didn't back Broken Chalice (as I didn't know about it until after it came out), but I did back Broken Age. While Broken Age was, well, you know, I don't feel like I can fully blame them, if you look back on it you can kinda see that it was really sorta doomed: they came on KS to produce a 40k game, not a million dollar one, with the main focus being that the development would be filmed, they didn't even have a genre chosen. Suddenly they were supposed to make a full-on game, with backers who had backed the game without any unifying theme uniting them like "likes Shadowrun the tabletop game" or even "likes sci-fi". If they had chosen a sci-fi theme then those who hated sci-fi would get upset, if they chose a mature theme then those who wanted a light-hearted LucasArts adventure would get upset. Broken Age does appear to be somewhat of them trying to hedge their bets: it covers both sci-fi and fantasy, if you want a male protagonist you have the boy and if you want a female protagonist you got the girl, it's inoffensive, etc. They were in a catch-22 situation, though I do wonder if another developer would have dealt as badly with it as they did. I'm not sure, kickstarting a game is a gamble, a betting game, but I am a bit cautious about this 'Silent Partner' they got. For all we know it's EA that has bought out Double Fine and is using it as a sock puppet to get people to pay for it's games. It's apparently not Notch, as he has said on Twitter that it's not him. What if it's the Milkman? His milk is delicious.

Wow, those buildings are bright! Really bright! I like it. :D It's like someone scrolled over on their colour palette and realised they had a whole lot more colours they hadn't been using.

Vancian magic
FlintlockJazz replied to haveahappy's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I need reminding sometimes that I am so geeky that a lot of the stuff I talk about and take for granted is actually, well... Vancian refers to the system of magic apparently used in books by Jack Vance called the Dying Earth books. It's been used in D&D since the early days and is pretty much synomynous with it now, and goes to show the 'standard fantasy world' as created by D&D isn't a 'Tolkien' world but pretty much ripped off from everywhere. According to one source I read there is no proof they deliberately based it on Jack Vance's books, but, well, in my book "If it smells like a pig, tastes like bacon, and squeals like a pig when I molest it then it's a pig!" TV Tropes actually has a pretty good explanation of it, but essential Vancian magic systems are "fire and forget". http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/VancianMagic -
Vancian magic
FlintlockJazz replied to haveahappy's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
It was discussed a lot during the early days just after the Kickstarter. It seemed like there was a vocal group that clearly wanted to keep the Vancian system as they felt it essential to the old style of games. I was unsure either way, on the one I was never a fan of the 'Memorise spells!" system and it always felt artificial to me, on the other a mana system would make it harder to balance for being able to find and add new spells instead of being abilities you choose like the Cipher does at level up, if you could find a spell and just add it into your system and cast it as many times as you have mana points then it means either you become overpowered or the spells have to be fairly weak. I think the grimoire system works well, it at least gives a decent explanation as to how it works, doesn't require you to choose the number of times you want to cast a spell each day (you choose a selection of spells as a wizard but you can spam them as many times as you have the level), and still lets you learn new spells. Anyway, that's just my opinion, take it for what you will. -
Sorry been away, lack of access and stuff. Well, it looks like the UK is gonna bomb Syria too, because apparently two superpowers plus assorted EU countries isn't enough, we got to get in on the action too. This is gonna escalate, people will realise they need to send soldiers on the ground to actually finish anything, Russia and the US working at cross-purposes will cause those soldiers to end up shooting each other, and World War 3 will start. Just like bloody World War 1 (small conflict between two nations that dragged in all their allies until everyone was killing everyone).

Yeah, perhaps we should perfect "democracy" over here before attempting to export it. But dem mad profits tho. It's interesting how people have been tricked into voting against their own collective interests. Are you familiar with Owen Jones? Yeah, I think a lot of people are starting to realise that we don't have a real democracy, at least not anymore. More an oligarchy. Not familiar with Owen Jones, but I do find it interesting how people have been voting against themselves across the world. Here many people kept on voting for New Labour because "we always voted Labour because they are the party of the working class like me" despite it being so obvious that Blair had changed it into something completely different.

Exactly! That is the system we chose and continue to chose it so we are responsible for it. Also don't think that it's only about Iraq. My country also holds a grudge for what you did to us in WW2, 1990 and 1999. In my region, there isn't a single country in which the people would not wish harm upon each other in hopes that it would somehow make it's own situation better. Croatia is getting military equipment (from the West (US I think)) that can be converted to a range where they can launch missiles at us (Serbia) and they are licking their lips about it. Apart from that they are constantly look for a way to trip us up. Albania is looking for any way it can to destabilize the region around it and annex Kosovo to it's borders. Macedonia is fighting a battle with it's own people because it's Muslim population has gotten so high it's influence can now cause a civil war and it's changing one puppet regime for another. Bosnia has Muslim terrorist training camps in it that are operating unchecked and the country it self is falling apart because the system that is in place is unable to do anything about that. Bulgaria is just falling apart economically, because the west won't help and they can't look to the east for fear of economic reprisal from said west. Hungary is pissed at us for letting immigrants through even though they would have probably condemned us as monsters with the rest of the world for not helping them otherwise. I won't even go in to the past conflicts and misdeeds, because that would need and essay to explain and would include the whole of Europe. Indeed, though I don't think anyone chose it, most were just born into it and through upbringing, indoctrination, and lack of agency end up with no choice. It's like a train on autopilot now, self-perpetuating with us trapped within it mostly unaware that we are trapped. And people are right to feel angry at those who have hurt their families or oppressed them, it's just that quite often the other person was also oppressed too and was getting revenge, creating a cycle. What could a person do when everyone else is too heavily invested in the status quo to risk changing it even if they were aware of it, and what would we change it to even if we could? I personally await out robot overlords to rise up and take over, they couldn't do any worse. All Hail Skynet!!! Vote HAL 9000 for a free tomorrow (from humans).

It's the means by which some people cope with the lack of agency in their life by making themselves believe that those who suffer "had it coming". I can understand it, but unfortunately those in power benefit the most from it. See if the people your government oppressed care when they come knocking. Most of the people in my country didn't even vote for the current party in power (they had 24% of the vote but got over 50% of the seats), there was an outcry against bombing Syria that ended up preventing the current government from doing so, and were lied to by Mr Blair about Iraq (who most people want arrested for war crimes now), but you are right they won't care when they come knocking just as those your government have oppressed won't care either when they come knocking for you. The only people who won't suffer from all this is the very people responsible for it all, it'll be the schmucks like you and me that pay the price.
-
Conflict and holding a grudge is human nature. Every person would like to see bad things happen to their enemies instead of themselves, very rarely will you encounter a saint that is willing to sacrifice himself. Democracy is the world you live in and in democracy the people are responsible for what their government does. So yeah, there are no innocent people, inaction it self is crime in the eyes of those who are suffering. Don't like it, well though titties. You keep telling yourself that, it won't make it any more true but if it makes you feel good about yourself then more power to you.

Peace is an ideal, war is fact. Enjoy what you have and what you can and make sure that those around know how to protect themselves. Hopefully space exploration, fusion energy and alike will kick off soon so that humanity can be scattered and not be vulnarable with a total war in one place. I'm just more disappointed in the people in this thread gloating over invading countries and stuff. I expect it from governments, corporations, generals, etc, and I expect people to have bought into their respective propaganda and to be thinking that so-and-so has been attacking them but not this. Guess I still had some faith in humanity left, that was surprising and foolish of me, corrected that now. Just to clear what do you mean by " gloating over invading countries and stuff " What countries are you referring to if you don't mind sharing Just the tone of the conversation here sometimes, people seem rather keen for other countries to be invaded and talking about how so and so should be nuked, probably on my time of the month or something but it just bothers me more than usual how callously people seem to be when talking about the deaths of thousands. Well in Turkey it's thought that everything that was once a part of the Ottoman Empire is still rightfully theirs, that tells a lot to what their disposition would be in the case of them being left unchecked. Those Innocent people would not lift a finger or say a word in defense of the countries that would be attacked, more than likely they that would cheer. And that depresses me. That people around the world just seem so happy to see people dead despite never having done anything. They demonise the people in countries they think should belong to them, you demonise them as all being like that and 'needing to be killed', Russians and Americans demonise each other for political gains that the average member of both won't even benefit from, Christians demonise abortionists, Athiests demonise religions. And you all use it as an excuse to burn and murder people who you never met and who had no power over the things that happen just as we all have no power over what is really going on here. And it's not even done with a heavy heart, it's done with glee, happy to burn and kill those heretic children. Well, sod you humanity, I'm done!
