  1. Whilst there is a relation between genes and metabolism, IIRC there is no direct relation between genes and beer belly. Causes are most likely a combination of a slowdown of metabolism after age 40 and alcohol causing more consumption of food.
  2. You right, but since we are talking about immortality here simply elongating the sequence won't do. We are speculating here about the ultimate consequences of this technology, in case that the whole sci fi dystopia wasn't a big clue I don't necessarily think that genetic modification will cause mutations but we have no research whatsoever on adverse effects. Genetic modification may not cause mutations, but ultraviolet light and oxygen sure will! To truly have immortality you need either: a cure for cancer, or true AI (or to be specific, the ability to download a human brain and optionally and ideally transfer it into a new living host e.g. clone) Otherwise no amount of senescence prevention will prevent death. Actually downloading AI depends on how much of the actual consciousness is preserved. Plus the host may not take to the invasion, but these options are complete fantasy and off the point. Let's just stick to the genetic aspect.
  3. Depending on the results of the U.N meeting and whether Kim Jong took his pills that day, we may have a peaceful solution that won't trigger war. Although I feel that we are just postponing the inevitable.

  5. Not really, what you describe is the result of "true" immortality and not augmented lifespan. The cause for such behavior I would describe as being a overlong sense of stagnation since is mortality that allows for transcendence. Although seeing that we are discussing it I'm not sure that it would be possible to become immortal merely by removing the telemeters on DNA, just unable to age. This seem like something that could be the result of future military research, before it reaches the public. As such it would be part of many military application research developed from this technology and would see combat on such future. IMO, the power struggle caused by such advancement would global to societal, within such a chaotic society the scenario you describe could be true. Yet it all hinges on 1) this technology being the holy grail of genetic manipulation 2) a lack of ethical research and 3) external and internal factors that would make an individual pursue that course of action.
  6. I'd say North Korea is just about the smartest country in the world. Without any real economy to speak of, armed with outdated WWII era military hardware and despised by just about every nation on this planet, it managed to make the world greatest powers (U.S, China, Japan, Russia) dance to its crazy tune. Had any other country in human history been able to pull off such feat? Cuban missile crisis.
  7. Such behavior comes from an already disturbed mind, the elite hurt the lower castes by their disregard for the consequences that do not affect them. But to deliberately hurt someone seems like something out of their way. If they indeed they are so filled with ennui and insanity it would had manifested on our present. But seriously, how do you connect longer lifespan to insanity? After a certain age most people mellow out, they don't become psychotic at worst they are senile.
  8. It is, because the elite is not going to bother with killing all the folks. The two social classes are worlds apart and the elite only bothers with two things: making money and keeping their never ending vacation.
  9. Why should they? Because every five minutes there is some complain about the children; which really is a lingo for faceless political mass. At least in public schools the government should set a more strict curriculum. On the subject of American's opinions: You are not going to be able to make everyone agree but this is a vital issue that should not be left to be discussed. The USA always asks for the "Disney" solution, a fairy that's going to wave a wand and make all the problems go away.
  10. The problem here is more of a lack of cohesion on the national level. Sure democracy and free speech is great, but American schools have no solid base and they shouldn't be indoctrinating them before they have a certain amount of knowledge. By that same process I see the whole Senior High School bit as dispensable, I still can't put in my head that Cuba has better education that a world superpower. Things like theology have no place in a Kid's schools classroom, simply because there is no consensus about it, nor any facts and it's not the school's right to tell people what to believe. Evolution on the other hand is a widely accepted idea that provides a good starting point into the subject, even if is not completely proven it can put perspective to the matter and allow for an interest to grow. Basically all of America should start to agree in what a good starting point for a subject is and not whether one is more correct than another. That's just going to create confusion.
  11. On Communism: I don't that Communism is a cause of poverty rather a consequence. The proletariat is comprised of the poor and uneducated is most likely that a country that is already poor and has these people by the dozen will become a Communist country. With Cuba being the only exception that I know of. On to thread: Change for the better is easier to adapt to, the worse I've seen is people developing a sort of passive resistance to it. But this is up to the individual's level of adaptability and this is what will determine who thrives and who falls after drastic changes. What is most worrying is not the speed of this change but it's nature. This is genetic manipulation, if the ground rules for the ethical research are not set now the future may actually be in peril. I imagine that first would be the research on viruses and cancer, then on to improve the quality of life, then synthetic materials for all purposes from space exploration to pharmaceutics. This is the point were I begin to concern, this is all based on the chance that we actually master the "programming" of life and are able to write up as we see fit. Standing on the brink of such power, how do we stop from making a bad choice?
  12. This isn't sci fi, it's real life. For that matter sci fi has been declining since Kindred.
  13. The best DRM that I've have seen is the "release the PC version a week later"
  14. Why do you assume that immortality would lead to longer presidential terms? What's more this technology is still far away from drastically changing humans, since most of the human genome's function remain a mystery. I doubt that this will cause a technological boom that will sweep the face of the earth, it's more likely that the changes will be gradual allowing for adaptation and easing further use of this technology. On the other hand why must you be so negative?
  15. Gattaca Gattaca! Truly though, it could be the next great revolution. Completely virgin grounds with extensive applications, from the improvement of the already existing to the creation of something completely new.
  16. True, but we shouldn't focus on Korea as a whole and more on Kim Jong. Take out the head and ensure that the proper succession follows.
  17. Will it though? Who then takes the first step and decides not to run with it anymore? Seems to me that your hated Euro is going to remain for a little while longer. Plus the more it drops the better, I've been meaning to take a vacation in Europe anyways.
  18. If NK sunk ships on a monthly basis is bound to hit some that aren't SK. Plus there is the whole other aspect of them kidnapping people because they represent a "threat" to them, IIRC you posted about a journalist that was in one of their prisons. Let's say that there is another case like that and doesn't end well, how do you think that the international community will respond to that? NK is bordering between being the world's annoying neighbor and a genuine danger.
  19. Yeah, but the Chinese don't seem all that interested and I have to question the effectiveness of talking to Kim Jong. So maybe we are in a Cold War with NK that's just waiting to happen, with more of these antics it won't be long before they actually do something that would cause a war.
  20. You mean Kali because Shiva is a man.
  21. Their threats definitively are not empty. They have 5000 artillery pieces trained on Seoul, let alone their missiles, nukes and whatnot. They can effectively level Seoul any time they want and there is absolutely nothing anyone can do to stop them. For all the lol North Korea haha rofl from the west to try and make people think it isn't a problem everyone in power knows that it is and that there is precisely nothing that can be done. I haven't read the report (I probably will if it is made publicly available) but I'm at the point where I wouldn't believe the western "intelligence" community if they said the sky was blue. The problem with exerting that kind of force is that renders deterrence useless and then there is nothing stopping the rest of the world coming full strength on them.
  22. You need to step up on the psychotic ladder, just don't get to where LoF is. No coming back!
  23. He kills a couple of heroes (Which is par for the course) And, of course, sleeps with Aphrodite. Still they should have spent more time making kratos seem a BIT sympathetic at the beginning of the game. Why are you discussing the story? Just look at the gore wave your tongue and forget about the plot holes. Ps.On GOW IV you tackle hindu mythology with over 100,000 deities to kill. Have fun. After he killed them, wouldn't they just reincarnate? I forgot that Hindu life is an endless loop. Seriously though there is still a lot of Chtonic deities, primordial deities and personified concepts to murder and bang. The first 3 games just skimmed over the vastness that is Greek mythology. Plus the ending of the 3 left a lot open to interpretation and a possible comeback.
