Poll suggests 1 in 5 Americans cannot make simple factual assessments
Orogun01 replied to Walsingham's topic in Way Off-Topic
What you are referring to is the story that was going around the Mediterranean which made it's way to the Bible. The connection between the Bible and Western civilization comes about through the Romans and there isn't much of Roman law in western civilization. Most adopt constitutional law. Also, the Bible as it is now wasn't complete until the council of Nicea and many of the books were modified before they became canon. So it begs the question of which transfer has survived until today and has influenced modern law. -
You don't seem to be a bad person so I'm going to just ask you politely to stop. The Portal memes got old years ago. Classic never go out of style. Maybe this isn't in the interest of discussion, but won't we run the risk of over analyzing a simple game. The game is an obvious deconstruction of classical storytelling devices.

Christianity is the dominant western religion, doesn't mean that it contributed to modern society when in fact has done a lot to hinder it. Scientific pursuit was often labeled as heresy, now science is the dominant word of reason and its the pillar of all modern life. It's hard for me to see how religion has contributed to the progress of mankind. Masons are of different variants but they all meet on the level, there is no religious intolerance or arrogance and for your info most Mason tend to refer to their deity as the Architect. Sort of the universal creator that all religions have. -

Dude, no offense. But how does a book filled with the same generic stories of all religions helps shape the world? The peak of Christian though came with the middle ages and it was wasted with nonsense and fear mongering, it took a revival of the old roman artistic traditions to bring the world back into shape. It's hard to see how any religious though has ever influenced modern society. Ps: there are several quotes from founders that state their thoughts against religion and fanaticism. Suffice it to say that they were mostly Masons. -

The Constitution was based on the ideas of John Locke, that is not to say completely ripped off. Locke argued for religious tolerance in his time, this transfered to the Constitution through religious freedom. I don't particularly know what you talk about. -
Your sister got kidnapped by aliens? That's exactly what happened to BW's talent, its being held up by a bunch of aliens who are forcing them to do everything ME.

Most male serial killers do, female serial killers usually don't exibit sadistic tendencies. Most women don't turn serial killer, and their MO is often subtle. Poison and things that don't require direct action, of course there is the exception to the rule e.g. Aileen Wuornos.

Mindless Entertainment + High Quality = ???

But once you destroy everything in Guerilla, what next? Though I did love that game. Destroy these two buildings! *run into one, destroying stairs so nobody can follow* *nuke the building next door* *jump out window and nuke the first building* *FLEEE* Yeah, I loved that game. Until I saw myself knee deep on EDF goons every mission, plus most of the upgrades are not that great, the sidequest and the main mission make no sense. But it has pretty destruction so everything is forgiven, -
Just like in a SRPG And where does the RTS part come in? The world map, managing resources to level up troops in a short time, and picking the right classes for the job whilst using the capital to build them up.

Impossible, for a state to be considered healthy it requires all those working together. It is fairly impossible for those to occur simultaneously. It's a kind of a Maslow social hierarchy of needs, safety and physiological needs come first than politics i'm afraid. The best political course of action is actual action, solve their problems and make your "idol" look good, soon you'll have an unifying messiah. If you can't find one make one.

This would only work if the statements come from a trusty source and for them that means someone they can relate to. If a westerner starts reforming their religious views they will respond with hostile force, even with one of their own the are bound to be dissent. It is precisely that kind of division that allows the current situation. There first must be an unification of sorts, at least a form of communication that's trusted and reliable for all the country. But most important the presence of enforcement in these remote areas. Charismatic people like that are hard to find, plus with no discernible medium of communication he would have to risk going to a lot of these villages. Even if we could charm everyone this only works as a long term plan, with the area as it is the most likely outcome is either the death of said person or a list of demands by each village. Stability should come first before solidification, the area is simply not stable enough that people will listen to promises.

I guess i'm a bit of an optimist. Still is sort of nice to have a backdoor into what the government is doing, the way the America media is, they could be gang-raping the Afghans and we wouldn't know about it.

The fact that some people have started calling it the secret war and that this country seems more focused on a Mosque and beating down Obama rather than on the War. The media has forgotten the war. Is not that they have completely forgotten it, is just that is sitting on the back of their minds and this is still an issue.

I disagree. Up until bombs were falling on Pearl Harbor the general public was clamoring for an isolationist approach to foreign relations so its not like being a superpower is all weve ever known. There is a great difference in the zeitgeist back then. Americana hadn't started, which is what people refer to when they speak of the "good old days" of America. Also back then we weren't as stupid, sad but true. -
The comparison really doesn't stand since what most individuals do has a limited impact on the world. The attempt was misguided and naive but it has brought back the subject of the war on everyone's radar and people need reminding that there is still a war out there that we are involved in. On a more personal note I believe that i'm somewhat entitled to know what my government is doing with my money; as long as it doesn't put lives in danger.

Started Disciples III yesterday, first impression is RTS meets SRPG. Very long and tedious moments with nothing to do, the difficulty scale is a little skewered and yet the game is strangely addictive.

You underestimate America's need to have the biggest **** in the world, being a superpower is as American as apple pie. Why, the day we aren't in a war or dictating the fate of the world we won't have anything to do. It is indirectly related to the subject since the lost of status will make Americans crazy and basically any idiot that runs with an ad saying that they can get us back to our former glory will garner the most support. -

I kind of see a parable here with the Roman empire, it wasn't built in one day and it definitively wasn't destroyed in one. It took a succession of petty emperors, if the damage done by Bush isn't fixed I see the US losing its status as the world foremost superpower. -
