Fear of women body in modern videogames
Orogun01 replied to obyknven's topic in Computer and Console
Come on man, pretty much all main male characters could drop their hero careers at any time to make a living as models, they all have great physique and they're all pretty! Chris Redfield, Ezio Auditore, Nathan Drake, Raiden (not the MK one), the new prince of persia, I could go on and on. And they're not sexualized? you can have freaking sex with Alistar from Dragon Age! And you could say that they all have good physique because of their line of work, but beign healthy and in shape doesn't mean that you have to look good, I remember Fedor Emilianenko had a pot belly and went undefeated for many years in MMA. Also their line of work doesn't justify them beign pretty and charming and all that ****. And to be clear, I have zero issues if a male character is appealing to the gaming ladies, but if a female character is visually appealing to men, well that's a ****ing crime now. The feminist rationale behind that is that the sexualization of males relates to their power, strong men with big muscles and that because of that it isn't the same as women's. Personally I just think that they are splitting hairs. -

Wouldn't that be more the problem of audience not seeing past the physical? Or assuming that any man MUST jump at any attractive woman like a horny animal? Don't get me wrong, I know what you're aiming at and I generally deslike fanservice and oversexualization - especially in anime. In real life and an Ideal world: yes In works of fictions it shouldn't be that way, the reason why is that characters are there for the service of the story. They are tools which the writer uses to communicate with the audience. Because of time constrains and the necessity of moving the plot forward, things like visual hooks, establishing shots and the like are used to quickly convey information to the audience. Part of the visual is the costuming and if clothes make the man they damn sure make the woman, character concepts are designed around a basic description of who they are; costumes follow this description. Also I don't assume that men must jump at any attractive woman, but I don't believe we are so far advanced that we are beyond basic animal instincts. Plus we are talking about overtly sexual, which is just a color in the spectrum of beauty one which plays to promises of sexual acts by showing nudity. The fact remains that when conceptualizing female characters in video games, one of the requirements seems to be sexy. There is no longer an excuse for it, since graphics are advanced enough that we don't need oversexualization to tell that the character is female (although, the specific case of Dragon's Crown I can see why it may be somewhat necessary) -

Explain please, why sexualization ( or big breast size ) of the character so bad? Really i don't understand. What's The Problem Here? The problem is that sexualization can detract from the character; I won't say that its absolute rule but generally if its just sex for the sake of being, then it does. Just imagine what the audience may have thought if fair Ophelia had a huge rack, swaying from side to side and her manner of attire was similar to that of Dragon Crown. The audience reaction to the whole play would had been different, those that are not imagining a series of ways to have coitus with Ophelia are asking themselves why that little whiny, queermo Hamlet doesn't put the moves on her. It would have completely destroyed the characters. I still believe that there is a place for sexuality in video games (hell, the damn thing is everywhere!) Since as a medium we do not have castings or real actors whose features are not the result of the creative choices of an art team; the reality is that the medium should step back from sexualization a little bit and just let the actual game shine. Unless of course the shine is there to hide how crappy, unoriginal and uninspired your game actually is. Also; on a related note: Why the hell every black woman in video games needs to have silky smooth hair? -

She seems dirtier and hangs around in a ship surrounded by seamen. -
There was a sad joke in my country about the kidnapping of citizens by South American regimes like Pinochet's; the joke was that people went to the police to report the kidnappings and disappearances that were being enacted by the police. Why in God's heaven would you trust the proper channels when the proper channels are the ones committing the crime? Its like trying to convince a cop to arrest himself for police brutality.

I did enjoy the fight scene with Russian Waldo a lot.

This program was being developed in secret, this is not policing this is spying.

Funny how these compromises never involve the government giving up something to favor the populace. Also, its worth pointing out that said program has a margin of error of 51%. So depending on what actions are taken in regards to the information, futures will be decided on the flip of a $20 million dollars coin. http://www.popsci.com/technology/article/2013-06/concise-history-nsas-online-spying-program-prism

Worth pointing out that your average operator carries the equivalent of what amounts to a suit of medieval armor. -
Give that you're a Cuban immigrant, are you really surprised? I would have though that any Cuban would have a pretty good idea of the difference between the official US ideology and its reality simply by knowing anything of Cuban history particularly its treatment by the US. There always was some element of doubt as the only source of information on the island was the government and they ran what amounts to a smear campaign against the US. It got to the point that it came off as a little bit obsessive-stalkerish. Still, all of that didn't exactly prepared me for actually experiencing this gap. It has definitively gotten worse during the Obama administration, which I now feel comfortable saying that it may even worse than Nixon's.

It's an oligarchy ruled by a proxy government that stands in for the interests of corporations and massive private entities which are blatantly overt in their dealings with the government. If you have any doubt look for the Monstato Protection Act, this was a law that passed and it was actually written by a company. So when a corporation can be considered to be a person, money to be equal to speech and legislation is written by corporations rather than legislators; tell me, is that Democracy?

I find the issue of women being misrepresented in Video Games to be a narrow view of a much larger issue which its the over-representation of beauty in media. I tried really hard to remember the last time I saw an ugly female protagonist; and whilst everyone may have differing views on what beautiful is there are generally agreed upon subjects which qualify for one or the other. The fact was that I couldn't remember one instance were it was universally agreed upon that the main character was unappealing, they are at worst average. Now I consider this to be a non-issue for being more a matter of style rather than an actual actively aggressive campaign to brainwash everyone into a standard of what beauty is. It is something that I believe people should be aware of as it is seen in every form of entertainment that's available, which means that ever since birth this information is being pumped into your brain to the point where it becomes unquestionable to have a hot chick in a game where the stylized proportions tend to lean to the grotesque (e.g: Gears of War) It has sort become the default and I believe that if the medium wants to grow and become a legitimate art form it must shed some of these conceptions, or at least create an alternative to them. -
@To everyone that says they don't mind not having privacy: "Can I put webcams all over your houses and share the videos with whomsoever I please?" At this point I really think that anyone that believes that the US has a democracy its either deluded or retarded, these type of post 9/11 paranoia programs are unconstitutional and quite unnerving to know that every day privacy erodes more and more. BTW, I haven't found any mention of what level of clearance you need to access the information gathered by the program?

Because every game has women in skimpy outfits and Dragon's Crown is therefore the norm? -

We are discussing drawings, and that's art weather you like it or not, we're not talking about mechanics or programming. And all core gamers are 16 years old, where did you get that information? from the same place where you learned about applied art and fine art? insulting gamers in general (when you're in a gaming forum discussing games) and pulling statistics out of your butt. Man.... this forums. Your argument was that the transformation of that said drawing into a game asset negated it's properties as art; my response was that while it doesn't negate them it doesn't necessary transfer them into the medium in which its portrayed. I said that the core video gaming audience is in the age range of 16 not that all gamers are 16 (check your fallacies). I didn't pull any statistics and the only person who is seemingly immature enough to be offended is you. If you can't rebut the actual point made in my post I would kindly suggest that you cease and let the discussion take it's course. I mean no offense. -

So, if you'rere drawing of a woman it's art, but if you animate that drawing, give her hit points and mechanics it stops beign art? Man... this forum. There is a difference between fine art and applied art, video games are not fine art because what makes them a game is not art. Also the fact that the core video game audience is a bunch of 16 years old is plainly evident as that article was written by one. -

On the other hand we could just entirely dismiss anything that Kotaku writes as retarded and think of them as the Fox news of a journalist industry with no standards, shame or concept of what their job entails. Quite an accomplishment, like being the extra "special" kid on the special needs classroom. -
Have you started having sex with corpses yet?

So democracy is dead because people are uninformed and impotent, the government has an all warrior caste and can launch a war at any time, plus they can drone American citizens on US soil. What else is new? This is why whenever I try to explain my thoughts on the US I always tell them that it's like Star Wars, there is an evil empire that bombs down planets that's being opposed by an order of religious nuts that came from a sand planet.

Are you basing this on the American/European markets or on the Japanese one? Because there are a lot of PS3 exclusive JRPG that don't make it overseas.
