I haven't had alt+tab problems with Kingmaker.
Which I've been playing too incidentally. Turn based help keep combat more manageable and I can switch to RTwP when faced with cannon fodder. The game's propensity towards rolling me 1s is just ludicrous though. My characters consistently fail to roll a hit against a target of 3. Reached chapter two, kind of stumped on the kingdom management.

If it's the game I know from my childhood, the objective is to place three of your tokens in a row to capture an enemy token, while preventing them from forming rows.
That highlighted square is news to me though.
Had almost exactly the same impressions as you. TTD can be used to analyze enemies, so even if you don't want to slow-mo hammer enemies with disadvantages, it's still useful.
