Ego Draconis was easy because damage was level-based, meaning if you outleveled enemies eventually they would do 0 damage to you even when you fought naked. This basically broke the game once you knew what you were doing.
DKS removes the level-based damage, but it was possible to get some weapons & armour with overpowered enchantments very early, again making the game very easy for melee characters (it's easy for a mage & archer regardless). This has been patched recently.
DKS also removed some high-leveled mobs and changed the design of certain areas completely. In my experience, the beginning in Broken Valley is (much) easier, but the rest of the game is about the same difficulty overall.
