Buying a New Notebook Computer - Buy or Wait?
Magister Lajciak replied to Magister Lajciak's topic in Skeeter's Junkyard
Control Panel -> User Accounts -> Turn User Account Control On or Off Makes for a much less unpleasant experience Thanks - I will turn it off immediately when I get my new notebook with Windows Vista. BTW: Any more upcoming hardware coming up that might be worth waiting for? -
Maybe they want to clearly differentiate it from the supposed disaster that was Starwars Galaxies by chosing a different era, while still making it a Star Wars game. Plus, the less well-defined KOTOR era enables more creative freedom than the more well-defined era of the movies and also by setting it in the KOTOR era they may succeed in getting some section of the KOTOR fans (certainly not me though). Of course, I am just speculating here - only the decision-makers at those companies know their reasons for that.

Despair not dear Magistrate Whateverwhatever! For such preclusion might transmute into the possibility of GLADIUS 2! I do not have a gaming console, so that is not much of a consolation for me, but thank you o' big cat warrior, for at least trying to allay my fears.

This is interesting, as you echo almost every KotoR I and/or KotoR II: TSL player I know - something that makes me wonder who the MMO will even target. Will they try to go after the very people who are against the product? Good point! I guess they will market it at the disappointed fans of Star Wars Galaxies. My response that I have zero interest in MMOs is misleading. I do have a negatively-based interest in MMOs in so far as they tend to ruin existing franchises by precluding further proper sequels from being made.

Paizo is doing exactly that with its Pathfinder RPG. It is creating its own system that will have a degree of compatibility with the D&D 3.5E system, but will be somewhat different. The process is currently in the Alpha stage and the Alpha release 3 can be downloaded for free from here: http://paizo.com/store/byCompany/p/paizoPu...r/pathfinderRPG In about 2 weeks (at GenCon), the Beta Release of the Pathfinder RPG will be become available. The Pathfinder RPG system uses the OGL and not the d20 license (which has now been revoked anyway) and is thus not subject to the vagaries of WotC.

Buying a New Notebook Computer - Buy or Wait?

Yes, part of it could be just getting used to a new system... Yes, this was precisely the source of most of the problems I have had when using Vista on the computers of others (such as trying to do some things on the computer for my sister...). I did not realize that the User Account Control feature can be turned off - if so, that does solve most of the problems with Vista for me. In terms of gaming, my sister has had some backward compatibility issues with older games, even though they were not all that old. There were issues with running Heroes of Might and Magic V (the only 'old' game we have tried running on my sister's new computer so far) and its expansions. Luckily, installing Service Pack 1, did solve that particular problem, but it left a bitter aftertaste in my mind about backward compatibility of Vista. Hopefully, it was an isolated incident. -
The only interest a KOTOR MMO gets from me is the negative interest generated by the fact that the MMO is likely to take over the franchise and preclude the possibility of proper KOTOR 3 being made.

Pathfinder RPG is not a d20 product. It is an OGL product, which essentially means that Paizo can do with it almost whatever it wants. Paizo can certainly license it for electronic products. Paizo people are well aware of that fact and have even expressed an interest in doing so: http://paizo.com/paizo/messageboards/paizo...icProductsCRPGs As a matter of fact, the d20 license for all publishers has been revoked by WotC with the advent of the 4th edition, though there is a grace period to sell of existing inventories of d20 products until the end of this year. By contrast, the OGL is irrevocable and cannot be pulled by WotC, plus it gives almost total freedom to publishers who use it. Here are the exact terms of the Open Gaming License (OGL): From: www.wizards.com/d20/files/OGLv1.0a.rtf As you can see, there is absolutely nothing there preventing the creation of an electronic product.

Thanks!

On another note, since the Beta of the Pathfinder RPG ruleset is only just coming out, any potential Pathfinder CRPG would at this time not be able to proceed far beyond the early stages of design.

Buying a New Notebook Computer - Buy or Wait?

Any other suggestions regarding whether I should order on 15 September or wait for a while? What is there that is coming up that might be worth waiting for? -
Just thinking some more about a potential Pathfinder CRPG - the ruleset is about to enter Beta, so it is far from finalized - only preliminary work could, therefore, be done on it at this stage.

And here's a great site for treating Diablo 3 developments: http://www.mycarpaltunnel.com/ Oops, I meant to quote this post.

Games that made you weep

I also disliked NWN1. In fact, I almost didn't buy NWN2 because of that and what a mistake that would have been. -
Games that made you weep

Dark Sun: Wake of the Ravager It was a sequel to the excellent Dark Sun: Shattered Lands and was a good game in and of itself, but had so many bugs and technical problems that in order for me to complete/pass the game, it required more ingenuity on my part to surmount these issues than to pass the challenges that were actually meant to be a part of the game. -
When is Red Alert 3 coming out? I have fond memories of the first Red Alert and would be interested in obtaining this game.

Ha, ha, ha, that was a good one!

My sister has a soundblaster card in that slot, but I don't know anybody else using it.

I thought the intention of Lucas was to portray the dark side as stronger in the short-run, but weaker than the light side in the long-term.

A pity - but yes, if it draws so much power, it is a non-starter for mobile computing.

My awful computer needs an update. Bad.
