What games are using the Eberron Setting?
Loof replied to SteveThaiBinh's topic in Computer and Console
I feel that if magic exists in a setting and is anywhere near as powerfull as it is in D&D it's only reasonable that it would be used for commercial interests. Especialy since as far as I know there is nothing stoping everyone and their cat learning magic in the system. So I feel that everyday magic only increases the suspension of disbelief in a setting where magic is powerfull and aquired through booklearning. But I have no idea if Eberron is a good setting as I have never looked at it... -
If the game will suck I have no idea. But one of the reasons that games become shorter and shorter is the increase in graphics and sound quality, but since atleast the visuals of spore are suposed to be algorithmicaly generated by the game engine and not use as much prerendered models there is a pretty good chance that the game will not follow the current trend of shorter and shorter games.

Another slim but functional irc client is chatzilla which either comes with mozilla or you can download as a plugin for firefox (which I hope you are useing instead of IE anyway ) As for that rocketlauncher me dinks you would need some contacts as well as resorces to get one of those bad mofos. By the way ender who said the physical diciplines means the character wants to fight, I love making very social brujhas who dont want to fight at all but struggle terribly with their tempers :D Maybe I will make one and send in incase you need a extra npc idea or a standinplayer for one or two of the sessions (know the groups full and i dont realy have time for the ongoing game anyway).

Hmm sounds like a VERY low standard target number with a random range of 2-20 and an average of 11 from just the dice. How high are stat modifyers on average? Altho the basic system sounds alot like my favorite, which is a homebrewed cyberpunk 2020 system where i have stats from 1-10 + skill from 0-20 + 2d6 vs difficulty number (normal difficulty somehere between 20 and 25). I also change the stat and skill set from setting to setting but i have found that the basic mechanic can be used for most types of games (although I havent played that many with it I have done some system testing for sevreal different settings).

I would also like to point out that the players being able to wipe out a small comunity isnt realy a level based problem as players could probably manage that in most systems, it just takes more planning in some then others. The issue that irritates me level systems is realy unproportional increase in health compared to damage potential. Which means that after a while its more or less imposible to be killed in one or two blows. In my opinion some of the sence of mortality for the character disaperes when death no longer can come as a suprise. It also irritates me that the feel of the game is next to imposible to keep consistant when so many abilitys differ so much between a weak character and a strong character. Another reason that I dislike D&D is that for the relatively lowpowered groups that I usualy enjoy playing the random factor is simply to large compared to the statbased bonuses. But again these are just my feelings and I cant realy say that they make D&D an inferior system with conviction because of them. Just a system I don't enjoy playing with.

Then you better make sure you save by buffing up so you can kill some critters and lever up me says :D

When Ender gets back and everyones got a character ready and are available to play. As stated previously, we'll play via IRC or similar. and if youre interested in joining.. Is there anyone who would be willing and perhaps also able to GM a second game for Europeans? The timezones is one problem with the current setup, the huge amount of people who want in another <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Thanks for the info, figured it would probably be IRC but I didn't see anything specific while skimming the thread. And while it would be fun to play again I don't think I would have time for an ongoing campaign (at least not once school starts again). So I asked mostly out of curiousity. Also timezones would be a problem for me as well. Something I probably would have time for is helping the GM manage some NPC's in situations where there are to many for him to keep up with at once. But this is probably not as common a problem when playing through IRC as it normaly is (have never tried plaing over the net)

Concerning Kult: I have only played the original swedish version of the game so I don't know how much has changed since it got translated and updated. As to if its scary I would say that depends alot on the GM, all the printed scenarios I saw where a bit to much gore and puss and in your face for my taste. That being said the setting definetly has ALOT of potential for psycological horror as long as you rememeber to keep the supernatural elements of the setting unkown so the players never get any real understanding of whats going on. So my final verdict is probably worth checking out, but useing prepublished campaigns involves more reworking then normal.

What you say is all true, but what I reacted to in the review was that it sounded like the level at which some tests became so hard that your own level of skill became meaningsless and it was all about pure dicerolls was way to low. In my opinion a good rulesystem should neve even reach that level of difficulty... skill levels and abilitys should always matter even if it does take an exceptional success to fully succeed. But it probably boils down to us valuing different things in a rulesystem. Also the issue would probably be pretty simple to "fix", sounds like all that would realy be needed is an increase of the atribute range and possibly a corresponding increase in random range. The problem with those two changes is that while they are pretty simple changes to the rulesystem they have very far reaching effects in the amount of work one has to do to modify any creatures/characters that oneself hasnt writen...

But is that a feature we realy want? At least for gameplay I can imagine it being very irritating for the player if the player is focusing on one object but the engine desides that he is focusing on something else... So far I don't think anyone has made a telepathic game engine Although I admit that it would definetly be a cool feature to have for cutscenes and such. and it might be usefull as a targeting indictor (by unfocusing all entitys that are not being targeted).

Yeah, that sounds familiar. Just a few hours ago I read a review discussing what you say here regarding creatures with high toughness values...I must I have read the same review you did. RPGnet review: Savage Worlds His was the only lukewarm review of the game, however, (though he admits he had problems with SW more due to personal preferences than because of faulty mechanics) as the rest of the reviewers gave it mostly 4/5 and and 4/4. Right now I am debating whether to use FUZION or Savage Worlds for my P-A game(though I am certainly open to other recommendations). And I would love to let you know how it goes when I finally get the time to work on this! <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Yeah I know there where alot more positive reviews then negative ones, but in my experience a negative review often tells you alot more about something then a positive one. A review that says everything is wonderfull doesnt realy tell you anything about the thing being reviewed just what the person that wrote the review liked whatever it was, whereas a negative one "usualy" tells you why he didn't like said product. Which gives you the ability to estimate if said feature would irritate you to...

Hmm why does everyone seem to like SPECIAL so much? Sure it was pretty good if you take into acount it was from a computer game (crpg rules are generaly pretty boring in my opinion). But if you dont take that into acount whats so wonderfull about it? It's level based (negative in and of itself in my opinion) It uses precentage based skills, which I think makes agdjusting difficultys bothersome.. It's a hitpoints/level system, and although it still manages to be somewhat leathal due to the critical hit rules, said crit rules are based on lookup tables that are far to complicated (I'm guessing a bit here) to be easily used in PnP. (Oh and just for teh record I didnt even think SPECIAL was that great in a crpg, I love fallout for the setting and the plot and not for its rules)

"Seasons of Mist" would be my vote to.

I have never played a Savage Worlds game but from a few articles I read about it, it sounded like it was a very streamlined fast and simple system. The one big complaint I heard about it was that it couldnt handle tough characters as the system seemed to have a rather small radom range in its dice rolls and pretty sall values for normal human atributes. So creatures with high toughness either take no damage from being hit at all or you score a crittical and all of a sudden you killed it. But as critticals from what I gathered where only based on pure dice luck after a sertain toughness level your characters fighting power no longer matters and it becomes a pure dicerolling game. But aside from this combat system problem it sounded like a pretty nifty system. If you try it or someone else has actualy tried it I too would love to hear your thoughts on it.

Yeah i have heard simmilar acounts from other players that play CoC as a campain game. I have never gotten around to playing" Mask of Nyarlathotep", although i have heard its one of the all time best campains together with "Enemy Within" (warhammer frpg). I tend to enjoy CoC more as a mini campain or oneshot game, in said onshots it usualy ends with the players dieing or going horribly insane (one notable and fun exception was the scenario where we where "rewarded" with imortality so that we could se the consequenses of our actions after having accidently managed to help all the old ones wake up).
-
I get the impression that our CoC games are VERY different from yours. When we play it's more of a mystery and horror because you know something is terribly wrong but you can't see it type of theme. So combat in all forms is next to nonexistant, an when it does occur its only against cultists or other human oponents and "never" agains any mythos creature (never as in yes it has happened once or twise but extreemly rarely). Also our characters generaly have very little mythos knowlage so the schollars dont nessesarily have less sanity, as tehir areas of expertice are more normal akademia such as ancient languages, history, religion and possibly normal occult knowlage (you know the things that dont work but that can give hints of the true horrors...). I also cant rememeber ever knowing any spells at all although its posible some character has known one at some time...
-
I don't think I have ever played CoC where any of teh players could be described as warrior/markesmen, we usualy all are scholars, craftsmen or something like that. Usualy works well anyway as it reminds us that combat is dangerous and shoudl be avoided at all costs. Although the running from cultists can get a bit anoying... But otherwise I agree with you agreeing with me :D

no no semi madness is a virtue just like lazyness, semi-madness in eccentric and lazyness saves on work :D
