  1. Removing health pickups because you don't want the player to explore doesn't even make any sense. So I guess it's a good thing that isn't their rationale at all! This is the exact reason the Call of Duty series now uses regen. Its developers want players to move from one intense action scene to another, they don't want players to get to the end of a battle and search around for a health kit because they are too injured to continue, and feel the need to reload because they are too injured to continue. You survive the battle or you don't. He even addresses your "Its all part of the fun" point. They know many people like that aspect it's just not something they are doing. While it may be part of the fun for some, the fun isn't dependent on it. Regenerating health is simply the removal of the health-kit hunt element, that's all. It doesn't effect exploration is any other way. In theory, sure. In practice it's never been an issue for me, thanks to an abundant supply. Never once have I needed to go looking for health specifically, it's always something I come across while doing everything else. Woah, you don't like finding audio logs? Without those Bioshock and the System Shocks would be much lesser games in my eyes. Logs were always the most interesting thing for me to find.

  5. Well I'm excited about ME2. If only I could see the truth like Pidesco, then I could, er, not be excited, I guess. You're wrong because you're a victim of hype is ultimately as meaningless as You're wrong because it's popular. A product succeeds because it does something right. That doesn't mean that everything or anything about it has to be the highest quality, it just has to have something that appeals to and pleases the consumer. If the final product has nothing the nothing the consumer wants no amount of hype or "brand management" will change that. Advertising can make people interested in something they might otherwise not know about, but it can't force them to like it.

  11. Moore may well have had a vague idea of how he wanted the series to end, but he has been pretty up front about the fact that he's making it up as he goes along. For example, they didn't decide on the final four long before they revealed it to the audience.

What scale did FEAR use? 1-10? 4-6? If we accuse them of lying about the scale they claim to use, such accusations are based on our own biases, not the actual truth. Knowing there is corruption in an industry is not the same as knowing who is corrupt. "I don't think this game deserved a score of x, but the reviewer gave it x, so clearly they are lying to us. I don't have any proof, I just know how the industry works." How so? How, for example, if we ignore the score, is the Eurogamer Street Fighter 4 review mkreku linked to a joke?

  14. No. The Computer and Console forum isn't strictly for RPGs. The only specific title the OP mentions is an FPS. It certainly does for some, every time Bioware announces a new RPG one of the first questions is "Will there be romances?". People seem to like that stuff, even if you don't understand it. Did you play LEGO as a kid? If so, were you confused by kids playing with the town theme sets instead of the space and castle themes? Do you only watch movies or read books that take place in fantasy worlds? If so, you're definitely in the minority. The Sims is far more popular, more mainstream, than any RPG or wargame could hope to be.

  16. That's not actually true. The colonial centurions wanted to become more human, but they were failing. The Five gave the centurions the power to create skinjobs, which ended the war. Under the guidance of the Five, the centurions and the skinjobs might never have returned to destroy the colonies, they may well have advanced to the level of the Earth cylons with the ability to give birth, hell they might have one day integrated with the humans. Becoming more human is clearly something cylons want - humanoid bodies, the ability to having baby. The Earth cylons succeeded and the colonial cylons probably would have too with the Five, but there was a fly in the ointment. Cavil wasn't like the other children, he didn't want to be human, he hated being human, stuck in that miserable old body when he should be a perfect awesome machine. So he got rid of his masters, and murdered the beloved brother that was most like what he hated. After the destruction of the colonies, the other models began thinking they made a mistake, which lead to the New Caprica experiment, but Cavil has never wavered from his desire to wipe out all that is human. He calls it "justice" to convince the others, and perhaps himself, but that simply isn't true. Notice how when Ellen asks the centurion for help out of the tub, and it extends a claw, before turning it into a hand? The centurions aren't used to being treated nicely. Cavil doesn't see them as "his people", they're "his tools". He was against removing the limitations on the non humanoid Cylons and those that were for it became his enemies.

  18. I don't think Cavil is insane at all. The fact that other Cyclons are now his enemies when they were once his allies isn't really an issue either. They were made to be like humans, and humans change their minds. I mean is it a plot hole that Boomer released Ellen, going against Cavil? As for limits on raiders and centurions, that's because the humanoid Cylons are as bad as the humans that created them. Is it really so surprising that Cavil wants to control "his people"?
  19. ^ That's not a plot hole, Cavil is just a huge jerk. He wants to be a perfect machine but he's more human than he realises.
  20. It seems people are responding to the thread title without actually reading Kaftan's post. The reason I brought up The Sims 2 is because, besides giving sex the silly name of "Woohoo", is treats it as just a normal part of life, and it's ultimately a far more mature depiction than something like The Witcher and its medieval mens magazine cards. Kinda like actions movies where the male and female leads have a sex scene. It's all about titillation.

WalMart may well be less likely to stock games that feature sexual content, probably largely due to idea that games are "just for kids", but this doesn't really say anything about why developers don't create games about relationships, of which sex may or may not be a part. I'm sure WalMart wouldn't have a problem with games about platonic friendships. I also think relationships in games makes for a more interesting topic than Americas fear of sex and nudity.

  23. The Sims 2! It's chock full of love and sex. Made by those uptight Americans. Of course if you want a story to go along with your human interaction, you're out of luck.
