  1. SJW dip****s. Hey, you went there.
  2. No it just means a statement about basic ethics and sexist trolls are separate issues and injecting the latter into the former is deflecting and diluting the former issue.
  3. Do you REALLY not understand what I just said? It's what GG stands for. The first part definitely. That's what nearly anyone would tell you, "this is about ethics". But obviously much of it has descended into a wider argument on gender politics and harassment.
  4. I'll tell how to #stopgamergate2014: - Adopt/Clarify/Reinstate an ethics policy. Do so loudly in clear, plain, straightforward manner without any unnecessary ramblings about politics or internet toxicity. Do not include in this section the 5 paragraphs about misogyny, save that itch for another time. Commit clearly to avoid or disclose any conflicts of interest. Commit to objectivity and impartiality as best you can, leave the ridiculous ramblings and snark about your strawman views of the real world application of objectivity out of it. - Cover the the harassment and doxxing of the side you aren't covering in a proper article. Condemn it in the same terms you condemn all other harassment. Admit that if you expect gamergaters to own up to their crap you have to own up to yours or if these people don't speak for you neither do random bigots speak for most gamers. Again, clearly, plainly, loudly. Admit that any double standards and hypocrisy on the matter are unacceptable. - Apologise, without reservation, without any between the lines jabs or the aforementioned 5 paragraphs about misogyny, in a plain and straightforward manner, to anyone who took any articles or social media statement by any of the site's staff made about the "gamer identity" as an insulting stereotype imposed on their hobby and themselves. Do so loudly in a manner befitting the scale of GG and not in some vague tweet. I don't care if you think you're misunderstood, include whatever "we didn't mean it like that statements" but swallow your snobbish pride and do it. Even if you aren't Gamasutra and the like still make a statement and clarify your stance with a healthy measure of respect for video game players. - Comment on/condemn the alleged blacklisting of developers based on the views the site's journalists/editors disagree with. Commit to covering what the public shows interest in with a measure of balance. - Now talk about misogyny as a toxic fringe that poisons discussion that while should not be ignored also should not be an excuse or shield held against the majority at large. Here you can run wild to your hearts content in the thesaurus and compete in the use of the most ferocious and melodramatic adjectives of condemnation like, horrendous, sickening, depraved. But mention again how it's an issue on both sides because man there is been hilariously plentiful of dismissing women and minorities as "straight white guys" and being made fools of on the anti-GG side. And if anything is 'problematic' that qualifies also. Whoever is still left in GG afterwards we can then talk about labelling as a misogynist mob. But this isn't going to be stopped by snorting acid at GG.
  5. Oh my. This is a definite no go for me then. I always use a custom control scheme.
  6. No the reason GG needs to shutdown is its utterly tainted. Its not going to achieve anything because of the extremist element that has hijacked its motives. Close it down and start some kind of group that can be regulated and raise the valid issues that you guys feel need to be raised You cant expect people who are influential in the gaming industry to support it because of the rampant bigotry displayed by some of the members of GG And no this doesn't mean I am saying you guys are bigots, I consider you moderate supporters of GG No. This would happen to absolutely any and all movements that go against the current social justice clique. it does not matter. They will always focus on the fringe that will always be present in any movement that is massively popular and paint everyone with the same taint through the power of their megaphones. A regulated group would change nothing the same way that the fact that the people who sent death threats don't even do it through the GG hashtag and it matters not. They will seek and find the supporters of your regulated group whom they can use to discredit you and pin them straight on you. Then demand you shut down because people are using your cause for harassment.
  7. And another day in irony:
  8. So can anyone explain how stopping Gamergate will make the crazies go away?
  9. Oh it's coming. The only way to stop all the bad things in the world is total control and lack of privacy.
  10. There is a place in the world where they have defeated internet harassment of at least one man. In the glorious republic of Astorska Belarus you can't use the internet anywhere without showing your passport and thus their radiant leader is protected from harassment.
  11. BW: "We can have a discussion when all harassment stops" (paraphrased) In other words, "When the sun rises in the West and sets in the East, when the seas go dry and the mountains blow in the wind like leaves."
  12. No face but damn.
  13. She declined according to the host.
  14. I listened to that huffingtonpost stream with Brianna Wu and god she's kind of an idiot. Her opponent brought specific comparisons and pointed to specific articles in the law and all she could counter with is "You're wrong because I say so". Note for potential idiots: No, this doesn't mean she deserved death threats.
  15. What they mean by that is if you're a man in the gaming hobby you're privileged over a woman because the industry caters to your tastes more. Or if you're a white guy wearing a hood less people will think you're a criminal thus your race gives you automatic privilege in how you're perceived. Stuff like that.
  16. What they didn't shout at nerds with enough fervour?
  17. Even though I never liked Moviebob much I sincerely thought better of him than this. No honour.
  18. Moviebob being his typical hypocritical bigot.
  19. I'm tired of grown men pretending to not understand how internet works in 2014 and what happens when things get popular. The numbers, ultimate ease of access, lack of any leadership hierarchy with moderator powers. Unfiltered crowd. You want to draw conclusions based on the >1% (and they know it's that) that you yourself keep highlighting and putting onto posters? Go ahead. But don't pretend you're being anything other than intellectually dishonest by choice.
  20. Well first "insightful" is not something I said. I said gravitate to. Second, companies didn't go against the trend, but did anyone prevent them? And third it may be the reason but you're stating it like an absolute truth and it remains to be actually proven in real life.
  21. And who made this decision? The Patriarchy? A huge free market. Thousands of competing game designers and you're telling me no looked into exploiting a market that is ripe for the taking because it is not occupied by anyone else. They all got together and said "nope"?
  22. There is no dissonance there. Women should have the opportunity to make games and have games be made to target their tastes. Denying them this is sexist. This however should be a matter of the free market and does not guarantee that women will take an equal stake to men in the dedicated "core" gaming space. And if this does not happen, it is not sexist. There is no need for some arbitrary representation number that has nothing to do with the choices people make. Why are most romance novel readers female? it does not matter. It just is. And doesn't require men in a bigger proportion to be "fare". If I were to speculate I would say game systems were niche technological gadgets and games were more mechanics based. And that is something men gravitate to more than women imo. This is why it evolved as a male hobby primarily. Now gaming has evolved since. Will AAA gaming attract women en mass in the future? Maybe. But there isn't any need for some arbitrary "equality" there. And certainly is no need to strong arm developers into that. It's an interesting question though as to what could get women into AAA console and PC gaming in those genres that that are "the issue". I'm sceptical it will be what people usually complain about in matters of gender representation. I am not convinced GTA (which caused much outrage) with a female lead would attract many women that aren't already into it. According to Bioware's own stats the vast majority played male Sheppard despite all the wonderful representation in Mass Effect mentioned here. I don't think it's Lara Croft with a hatchet that will get women to game more.
  23. No. "Why do women need the opportunity to get into video games?" This would be sexist. But we don't NEED more women in men's hobby any more than we NEED more men in women's hobbies. Just do what you want. People worry about creators being shamed and dragged through the mud when they don't appeal to all demographics. Because they don't have to.
  24. See no one has a problem with there being more of whatever. It's that "games need to change because the existing ones are terrible", it's the phrases like "the industry needs to stop doing X and think of what it is teaching society" kind of nonsense. People like Anita don't just want games for themselves. What they really have a problem with is that the ones that are really popular are "misogynistic and violent" and therefore they need to be changed.
