  1. Merged. Infinitron tells us that cooldowns have been confirmed: Not a fan of cooldowns, I imagine they were trying to cater to people that don't like to pause often, but I hope that's not the primary mechanism for abilities or it won't be great.
  2. I like semi-random for barrels, chests and other things when done right, but as Infinitron says, I'd like to see enemies drop stuff that actually corresponds to what they have. You could use a combination, e.g. Bandit A always drops leather armour & short sword, but may have a random list that includes small gems, gold, scrolls, etc.
  3. It would be nice to do without boob armour, as I've seen little to suggest it is historical or practical in any way. That said, I'm mostly happy to avoid thongs and bare midriffs. (Besides, if they did have bare midriffs, you'd be seeing a six-pack...)
  4. We can always review it, but of course, no promises. We're always happy to make edits for people as necessary, so you don't need to feel bad about it.
  5. Are you close to wrapping it all up courses-wise? I don't want to presume, but it's always sounded like you weren't that passionate or certain on your specific degree, either, which means you don't want to spend too long there. I'm doing a PhD because I love it, but if I recognise that if I didn't, I'd want to get out ASAP. It's tough, but when you've had a ****ty few years, there's two ways to go - either you persevere and make it out of there, then those ****ty years become 'character-building' years or something, or you go under, and then those ****ty years define you. That is to say, it's what happens next that makes the difference, not what's already happened. Currently reading Wittgenstein. I suppose if you're that brilliant, and lived a hundred years ago, you get to write without any regard for structure or method or conventions. Lucky bastard. Great read.
  6. Love the backer reward dungeon idea, hopefully we'll get to at least 5 levels on that. Banner Saga, which was kickstarted, is rolling out betas to all 20,000 of its backers over the next few weeks. I'm one of those, so I'll be able to see how such a large beta goes for them. Of course, at the moment only a few thousand pledged enough for betas in P:E, right?
  7. I played it through 5 times before the DLCs came out, now I can't make myself do it again. Maybe Sawyermod can help, but VATS really is a load of herp derp crap.
  8. It would certainly make a difference from 'please kill me i'm sorry i have to eat your brains boo hoo' zombies, or 'I linger in this world because I have Freudian issues with my former life and am actually really jealous of you' ghosts.
  9. I liked the Spirit Meter, but Dead Money did a much better job of it for me. It used a variety of mechanisms that interlocked in an isolated setting to create that sense of desperate survival and hunger, whereas MOTB took a standard, sprawling, take-your-time RPG world then tacked on a meter. Of courfse, we can't equate PE's souls with MOTB at all - I imagine it will be very different, and I'd like to see it bled into all the features and mechanisms in game design.
  10. Merged the cooldown thread, since it's really parts of the same discussion. Apologies for the confusion.
  11. Well, there is no 'every other country', since by and large, the only countries that really makes games are US/Canada, UK, France, Germany and Japan, with smaller/individual cases in places like Sweden, Belgium, Poland and Russia. (Germany might go here, too.) But yes, European games have been making rounds reasonably well the last 10 years.
  12. Asia is a very, very different market, both compared to the West and between each other. Unfortunately, I simply have no idea how the 3 poll options correspond to that reality. if I take Korea, which I know the most about, hurdles include incredibly high piracy rates, a huge penetration rate for grind-heavy MMOs and other multiplayer-oriented experiences, an even more widespread view that games are about quick relaxation or resolute powergaming, etc. There's simply no avenue for advertising any game, let alone PE, in a 'late night TV' in Korean terrestrial broadcasting setup, not everyone Asian reads manga, and I'm not sure what 'websites for the rich' is meant to imply, since disposable incomes are extremely high across the board. Europe has always been favourable to Western CRPGs, of course, and we are already getting the FIGS localisation. Russia and Poland love these types of games, though fans there are pretty used to playing them in English.
  13. It's incredible anyone ever found NWN1 good-looking. I remember waiting and waiting for it after Throne of Bhaal, then when it came out it looked like a bunch of blocks and jaggies.
  14. Traditionally, cheats have fulfilled this function better than most 'easy modes' could - because then you can control just how much you want to make it easier. If you're asking for a very, very easy mode just to get through the story, would that not be a good solution? e.g. it was a trivial matter to give yourself a few levels, or even heal your characters instantly, or even insta-kill individual monsters in IE games with cheats.
  15. I don't think the ego thing means companions who think the PC is the bee's knees all the time. It seems to be more about how the companions will always impress upon the PC the importance of PC's quest and of his/her role in that quest, and show that, whether they love or hate him/her, the world to a large extent gravitates around them. Obviously, there are people who wouldn't like that either, and want the world not to give any kind of crap about the player. I like that too. But I'm just trying to clarify what it means (in my opinion).
  16. It is an opinion shared by Chris Avellone and Josh Sawyer, as well as many other designers, by the way. That is, story is important, but you write the story in order to provide excellent gameplay, not the other way round.
  17. Arcanum was tricky to get into for various reasons that don't all have to do with combat difficulty. I really doubt it will be like that with PE; if I had to guess, the curve will probably resemble BG or IWD much more. That said, arcanum is a fantastic game and deserves a few hours of your time, once you get used to it it shows you how special it is.
  18. I'm sure you can adjust combat / standard difficulty, yo ujust can't turn these special modes on and off. Which makes sense, really, for them.
  19. I'd rather they do what P:E does, but sure, a new IE game would also be good.
  20. Hopefully, including these modes officially makes it easier to mod them - e.g. imagine having an .ini file to change many of the parameters.
  21. One of the worst things about the NWN series was its UI. It felt like I was in a jewelry shop playing with cheap board-game miniatures on the countertop. I do think minimaps are great, as long as they aren't full of huge markers and flashing lights telling you where to go. Just a mini-map, literally.
  22. It would be nice if people took the time to read what each other are saying then respond thoughtfully, but at the moment it's a lot of new people coming together and there's impatience in the excitement. Most people do seem to be OK with discreet kill animations.
  23. I wouldn't mind, as long as it was quick. No close-ups, no slow-mos, and nothing as farfetched as Fallout.
  24. Wasteland 2, Dishonoured. I think that's it on my waitlist. South Park might be good too, pity it's based on, well, South Park.
