The Official Romance Thread
Blarghagh replied to Blarghagh's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
If I recall correctly, the most negative thing an Obsidian employee has ever said regarding romances is that Chris Avellone dislikes writing them. -
Dinosaurs are cool.

Nope. There are no evil reputations either. Yes, that's why "evil" is in quotes, obviously. Those were not random keystrokes, if I had wanted to say simply evil I would have done so. I meant reputation factors that people generally associate with the concept of evil. The cruel and deceptive dispositions come to mind, except instead of earning them people just assume they exist and they respond to you as if you were cruel and deceptive. Starting points in those dispositions could make a death godlike feel more in character without having to add a large amount of custom dialogue for this race, and would also simulate how hard it is to get out of prejudice by making it much harder to get a better reputation. I'm not advocating this idea be implemented as I have no idea in what way responses to the cruel and deceptive dispositions come to fruition in the game or exactly how death godlikes are treated, but I felt the idea was interesting and I was hoping for something of a more in depth response than the utterly lame out of hand dismissal of "nope". That's presuming death is evil in the first place? And if it is, why? What exactly is evil? If you ask me, I don't consider things as good or evil at all, but then again, others might not reason as I, so... In my view, it is not accurate to give Death either evil or good points since life doesn't fit into such ideas. I'm not saying death is evil in the first place. It was said that death godlikes were prejudiced against as being evil or harbingers of doom, not that they were evil by default. They're not getting evil points as there is no binary good and evil system in Pillars of Eternity. They would be getting points in reputations (reputation being how others perceive you) that are associated with the concept evil because of how prejudiced people are against them. The starting points would indicate that they, being death godlikes, are automatically seen by the populace as being cruel and deceptive even though they're not. Essentially a form of racism. This would counteract the problem given earlier in the thread such as how in Neverwinter Nights 2 you could play a drow or a tiefling and it had zero bearing on how people responded to you beyond the occassional dialogue blurb.

Hrm, that change bothered a lot of people but it never bothered me. I felt they made it perfectly clear that this was an exception, a single and last honoring of the old allegiance between elves and men. In fact, to me it strengthened that theme in a "exception that proves the rule" manner. Things such as Legolas' ridiculous takedown of the Mumakil and Army of the Dead swarming like ants bother me much more than that sequence (which is why The Hobbit films, while entertaining, are not nearly as good as LoTR - they're filled with ridiculous action sequences like that). I felt it worked quite well in-universe and didn't break my immersion or the world logic. A similar change is Faramir having a harder time giving up the ring - a lot of people hate the films for that but I think it makes sense. In the book, Faramir all of the sudden not caring about the ring at all literally stripped the ring of all threat and power. It's one of the few changes that I felt seriously improved upon the book. To each their own, I suppose.

Thanks Wals! I know what it is, but as a European I very rarely hear hype for American locations.

What, you're just playing, right. The girls definitely get their due, I can think of three mad, badass chicks off the top of my head, Eowyn, Arwen, Galadriel. Tauriel is a welcome addition, not a retcon. Retroactive continuity in LOTR is unpossible since it isn't ongoing serial storytelling. All six movies are essentially personal opinions, no reason to be injured by them. No canon were harmed in the making thereof. I'm going to give you Eowyn and Galadriel by default, they're awesome. But how is Arwen badass? If I recall correctly she barely even appears in the book.

Not particularely thought provoking, but I think this tree house is super cool.

There's hype for Tahoe? Anyone have some advice for people getting into running? I'm looking to start soon.

Man the turmoil in this thread sure came to a head didn't it? I had no choice but to face it head on. -
Thanks! I guess if you're going to introduce that character you're going to do it in a movie that paved the way by having a murderous, talking raccoon.
-
Did you stay through the end credits? Could you confirm for me if showed up? I read that enough times now to think it's not a hoax.

Have fun Bruce.

Previous topic closed for length. Last page was discussing Josh's claim in an interview that if Obsidian were to do romances, they would want to do them right and that a good romance takes time they did not have for PoE. As before, here are the rules: Romance in PoE Thread Rules - This thread is for people who wish to actually discuss the roleplaying merits of romances (or lack thereof) in regards to Pillars of Eternity. You can lament or celebrate that they are not included, argue why the game would have been better or worse, give examples from games that did it well or did it poorly, talk about modding efforts to add it in, or discuss how it might be included in future expansions or installments and anything related to those subjects, etc. - Anyone posting simply to make fun of or abuse people who like or dislike romance or to point out how often this topic has been done before will find their posts deleted. If the thread goes off-topic or gets very hostile, it will get pruned. - Other romance threads will either be deleted or merged into this one. Knock yourselves out.

The star denotes which one you voted for. -
Yeah, I guess that's non-combat if you don't count the bandits, dire [animal]s and the occassional dragon popping down on you.
-
Well, my interest is piqued anyway. Exploration sounds neat.
-
So non-combat, non-competitve MMO. What's the gameplay? Just walking around?
