Global Implications of the Ukraine Crisis
Russian Pol Urges Journalist Rape A far-right Russian lawmaker known for his outrageous speeches exploded during a televised press conference Friday and urged an aide to rape a pregnant female journalist who had asked him a question. The journalist asked Vladimir Zhirinovsky, the deputy speaker of the Russian Duma (lower house), about recent Ukrainian moves to crack down on Russian men entering the country. Bizarrely and incomprehsibly, Zhirinovsky blamed the Ukraine unrest on "uterine frenzy," then said to his aide, "OK, I'll say it and then you run up and start raping her hard." Then he started shouting "Christ is risen!" and pushed the aide toward the journalist, who happened to be pregnant. "Go kiss her! Go kiss her!" Daily Beast ~~ The _Deputy Speaker_?

It's a gift I have. Although I hate to say it but I usually only infuriate women that way. Typically when I'm being very respectful and/or busy I say something or text something and end up fleeing for my life. Sometimes to a different city. Merely being thrown out of a RP group is pretty mild by comparison.

"United States' claims at being a democracy seriously threatened"
Thanks for posting the story. I saw it and forgot to post it up. My solution would be to admit the strength of vested interest and put them into a 'House of Lords'. Badge them up. Let the representative from Exxon get up on his wee hind legs and speak directly. On a less panicky note I wonder how many of you have actually gone out and met the great public on the ol' campaign trail, besides GD? One explanation for the data is that normal people - the other group - are half-educated on most issues, and terrifyingly inarticulate.

I strolled up to and looked at a church. Close enough.

Please confirm you aren't serious. I doubt he is joking I don't think Val is saying it has never been done, but it is not joke that the ability to do it right this minute does not currently exist. If there were a compelling reason to go it could be put together in a few years time with sufficient funding no doubt. The main reason Apollo was cancelled and no other programs created is that it is prohibitively expensive to stage manned moon missions with not a lot of benefit to justify the costs (aside from exploration for its own sake) This is precisely why we have to militarise space. The only way to motivate humans to organise for the long term. Savage self-interest. I'm only 20% joking.

What you did today
Sinister quote of the day. Taken out of context that quote would have the FBI trolling this board in a second. Who am I kidding, they already are here watching Val, WoD & me! ATF and Secret Service, not Feebs. ;p

Mongolians, actually. Russians were cool when the Reich and the SS realized they're facing kitchen sinks. Kitchen sinks?

What you did today
Suddenly, and for no very obvious reason, I feel incredibly relaxed. As in sitting on a porch gazing at the sunset having drunk two beers and eaten a very good fish dinner that you caught yourself, while stroking a loyal dog - relaxed. How bizarre. Wouldn't it be awesome if I just stayed this way? EDIT: I'm still relaxed, but I have to admit that the most logical explanation is that I just suffered some sort of spontaneous brain damage!

Building up a modern military force does take time, like ol' Numbers says. You can run a browning machine gun off an assembly line in 20 minutes. But training someone to use it effectively (not just make it go bang) takes time. You also need a logistic system to get it into the field and keep it working and fed with bullets. And the gunner with beans. And medical support. Then he has to know where he should be and someone deciding where that is. Radios, trucks, training, organisation, trust. This is why I shudder at what is happening with the UK Forces. We've got a lot of expensive kit, and not enough expensive people to make the kit function. Anyway, I'm not sure why we're debating teh nature of modern warfare since this isn't about modern warfare. It's about domestic Russian politics.
