What you did today
Gfted1, just because you made it doesn't mean anyone can. Quite the reverse, IMO. So if I'm disagreeing with your politics you may take that as a sincere compliment to your personality. From my personal perspective, it's like arguing about antibiotics. Sure, you can heal without them, and you can also get really sick if you stay on them too long. Most people do neither. They take a hit, they take the drugs, they get better quicker. To understand the welfare state you have to understand why we created it. It emerged in the UK in the wake of WW1 and WW2. Three core concepts emerged: 1. A faith in organised motivated administration as a means of achieving the 'impossible' 2. A mixing up of social classes and a realisation by the successful middle and upper classes that the lower classes weren't workshy bastards, and were generally much more pleasant when they weren't starving 3. As JFSOCC already pointed out, it costs less to keep a man in his house and capable of finding a job than it does to have him homeless and effectively incapable Of course, the same mechanism for keeping honest men from ruin can be abused to keep lazy ****ers in clover in return for their vote. Which is why I find it infuriating that modern socialists p*** all over the noble principles on which it was founded.

What you having for dinner tonight?
FFS, Wals are you living in a POW camp or something? Can I send you a Red Cross parcel? Is James Garner cutting about having made some potato vodka? FFS, Wals are you living in a POW camp or something? Can I send you a Red Cross parcel? Is James Garner cutting about having made some potato vodka? Funnily enough I was considering breeding up some rats... No, the other night i grilled some supermarket pork chops and they came out BOILED in their own injected brine. Like eating pine boards. So I'm really fed up with supermarket meat, and am preferring to eat veggie instead, assuming I can't get to a butchers. Which I usually can.

What you having for dinner tonight?
Probably the single most useful thing I absorbed in my military training was the two can rule. Never have more than two drinks unless: a) You haven't any work the next day b) You have got your sights on a pretty girl c) You have decided to settle for a quite ugly girl d) You are in an odd mood e) Someone else is buying f) By doing so you can cause someone who is lightweight to drink far too much and get themselves into trouble.

Curiosity: Creating Reality in Virtual Reality
If you REALLY want to blow your mind, forget acid. [i thought I was going to talk about the stroop effect, but it turns out I've misremembered the name] Get some identical sticks, and colour the ends in different colours - red, mauve, green, etc. Hold you head still, looking straight ahead. Have a friend move one of the sticks from behind your head in an orbit about 8-12 inches out. Remember NOT to move your eyes. Try to direct your attention internally. When you can see the colour of the stick, say so, and have your friend make a note of whether you were correct or not. Provided you don't cheat you will find that althoughyou think you can see colour out to a wide angle, in fact you are almost always wrong at the extreme angle. To confirm this you can repeat, and move the coloured sticks round to the front. They actually 'change' colour. Basically, your eyes don't have red-green sensitive portions away from the centre of the retina. When we think we see in colour, we often aren't at the fringes. It's being simulated. EDIT: It occurs to me that if I got the original name wrong I might have misremembered the entire bloody exercise. Which would be entertaining.

Kenya Mall Attack
It's a good question, Bruce. I think the entire concept of intimidating/terrifying large groups of people for any strategic duration is completely bat**** mental. I mean when has it EVER worked*? It's not working for AlQ. It didn't work for the Allies bombing Nazi Germany. What's more baffling is that we thought it would work when we'd completely resisted the moral effects of the Blitz! If anything the Blitz only made Britain pull together more effectively. *NB I know it occasionally works against merchants/cliques of merchants. Viz the Anglo-Dutch wars. And arguably the jerries against the Low Countries.

I've just realised that the rituals require holy oil to be effective. In the absence of any better ideas may I suggest you write to Dan Abnett, with a return post paid parcel and some gun oil? Explain your predicament and I'm sure he'd be happy to wave a bolter around and utter some choice oaths.

Obvious question: have you considered going down the military simulation line?

What you did today
it is, I'm saving up for government exams, which cost about 1100 euro, I will also have to study about 700 euro worth of books, and I'll have to join adult education programs, also costing money. Currently I'm saving about 250 bucks per month, but some months I can't keep that up. Mate, I am very genuinely impressed. I don't save that much myself, full stop. I hope you get there.

Kenya Mall Attack
In fairness to the Al Qaeda franchise, I think I'm safe in saying that the bodycount is very typically mainly 'friendly civilians' for just about every political insurgency. It's just that 'Qaeda are particularly keen on using mass casualty attacks just to weaken public perceptions of government authority, make 'ze infidel' pay for insults to their mates etc. So you actually SEE the casualties, rather than them disappearing off the street, on a cold November afternoon. I make no bones about being hugely biased in terms of my perspective. But I hope you can see (looking from my point of view) that I'd be regularly annoyed by the news.

What you having for dinner tonight?
No meat in the house, so I'm going to have to settle for a vegetable soup, using meat stock cubes, and some toast with fish paste.

Curiosity: Creating Reality in Virtual Reality
We are all aware that the senses can be deceived, the eyes fooled. But how can we be sure our senses are not being deceived at any particular time, or even all the time? Might I just be a brain in a tank somewhere, tricked all my life into believing in the events of this world by some insane computer? And does my life gain or lose meaning based on my reaction to such solipsism? Kenya Mall Attack
No, sorry, mate. I didn't mean to jump on you specifically. I'm just talking the BBC etc. All these British jihadis talk about defending muslims. But it's the god damned jihadis who are killing thousands worldwide. But that's not what they see on TV. It's not what's trendy right now. The trendy narrative is that it's Ze Evil West, so off they trot to dust-bowl nowhere and start killing muslims. It's the ineluctable stupidity and avoidable circumstance of it which riles me more than anything else.

Kenya Mall Attack
I meant as in Bruce's comment that people were surprised that so many attackers were Westerners. I didn't mean that civilians getting killed wasn't shocking. Although I would observe that hundreds have been dying in a renewed wave of violence in Iraq, and no-one seems to give a flying ****.

What you did today
If you really are taking action on all those axes, then FFS why are you feeling like such a bum deal? You're not lying down and taking ****. You're getting on and making a plan, and following through. You'd probably find there's at least one or two quieter girls knocking around who'd it turns out quite like you if you took the initiative and noticed them. Seriously.

The Obsidian Cup
Am around this evening. Need to do some work, but probably do that in tandem. Otherwise good to go.

Kenya Mall Attack
Bruce, people are regularly shocked because it upsets the narrative that the violence is about some regional issue or other. Doesn't play so well when the terr is third generation from Bristol and the greatest hardship ever inflicted on them by The West is being forced to sit their GCSE exams.

Can I make the obvious suggestion? It's advice I need to heed, so it's not harsh. But it is adapted for you. 1. Fat - do some exercise. It might not make you thin, but you'll feel better. 2. Living with your mom - when I still had a mom I spent dud months kipping at home to save cash. Didn't stop girls getting interested. Typically they had their own places anyway. 3. No job - get a job, or start your own small business. The latter is hard work, but you'll feel really good about it, even if you're earning beans. 4. No education - I'm educated, but I've never much minded if my friends or employees are. Take an interest in something, though. Get expert in that. 4b. Being interested in other people is better (socially) than being interesting in your own right. I would suggest that you falling for this girl/other girls who are unobtainable is as much your subsconscious kicking you up the arse as it is about fancying them.
