  1. The Witcher 2 had an entirely new combat system, "fixing" something that wasn't broken and ultimately worked better in the first place. But there is a formula.. and all that I care about is new content, not new mechanics or gimmicks. Obviously there would be changes to the games mentioned as they'd be in entirely new engines to start with, but as I believe someone else mentioned, it wasn't the new mechanics that made said games good, and I haven't seen any game come close to those levels of quests and character writing. Of course new quests and stories would have to be made, being a new game and all. Keep the things that worked, fix the things that didn't but don't go overboard as it takes time away from content creation.
  2. We don't need new ideas. That's how you end up with garbage like the Witcher 2. We need games with good quests/writing/characters/dialogue worth the time it is to play them. And I'd much rather play an inspired game with a few bugs than some super polished but stale one.
  3. I haven't gotten the sense at all that Obsidian is currently working on a Bloodlines game. Seems to me that there's just been this **** tease thrown around a few times to see how interested people are in a sequel, but that's as far as it's gone currently. An Arcanum successor seems more likely right now. I'd welcome it, as it'll be in UE4 and surely more interesting than nearly anything else in the industry, but am the opposite of you in wishing it over a Bloodlines sequel.
  4. Nothing for me. AAA is flash, Indie rarely compels me to even play, much less actually complete. My gaming this past year has been nothing but old games and lurking to see what Cain and Boyarsky are up to.
  5. I still enjoyed the sewers in Bloodlines simply due to the lore placed in spots. Just goes to show, at least for me, that just a little bit of decent writing can go a long way. Too bad 99% of games can't even accomplish that.
  6. I wish I could get into games like that, but they're just mind numbingly boring to me, especially the combat focused aspect. If a thousand years passed, I still wouldn't have gotten myself to play that kind of game.
  7. I don't get why there aren't more games produced in the $8-10 million region. That's where Alpha Protocol and Bloodlines sat, two of my favorite games, which weren't profitable due to garbage reviews and probably some marketing. Today you wouldn't really need marketing that much, so where are those games? I hope whatever Boyarsky and Cain are working on is something along those lines, otherwise I don't care much about anything new, whether AAA or indie. Plenty of older and better games to play, save for the rare exception, and even that's a stretch.
  8. True. NV's third person is useless except for viewing your character every blue moon. Bloodlines has a good balance though, first person for interactions with people and environment, third person for melee.
  9. Why not have both? I much prefer playing New Vegas and Bloodlines in first person, for example, but it's nice to have the opportunity to toggle to third when needed.
  10. I liked the start of Dead Space, then it became too monotonous and I'm really not a fan of the design choice to make controls cumbersome as a means to raise difficulty. Even then, the only times I remember dying were in QT events, which were annoying also, and another sequence or two. So, ultimately, the crappy controls didn't make the game harder, it just added visual annoyance. If you click through the worthless, over written dialogue, the game is extremely short(Witcher 2). I won't bother with the 3rd game since I didn't enjoy the 2nd one, and I'm tired of that setting and those characters. Skyrim still has much better sprawling views.
  11. No idea why I decided to start another game of Old World Blues. It's not like I forgot how much of a boring and irritating slough it is. Overwhelming nerd humor, mind numbing repetitive "quests" and countless respawning enemies. Not one of Avellone's better projects. Also playing a bit of Lisa. The narrative of getting kicked around the whole way through is pretty enjoyable so far.
  12. They should. And it needen't even be a Fallout/Wasteland type of "desert & destruction" setting. Which is a damn shame as far as I'm concerned. Yeah. It's just what sells. Unfortunately even indie developers have to bend to the will of the consumer. And by the way it looks, this niche CRPG market will buy any game in traditional post apoc/fantasy/magic setting, rendering most attempts at something new a waste of resources. At least Obsidian is leaning towards something slightly different in Tyranny, but it's not different enough for me. Maybe PoE will be a steady enough earner for them to eventually do more risky titles. Hopefully whatever Boyarsky and Cain are working on is one of those things, otherwise it's awfully quiet on the Obsidian front, and it's pretty boring seeing no news, month after month.
  13. ^Good choice. No interest in FO4 either, but I still play NV. I'm not sure I'll get anything in the sale. Most indie games are too quirky and major published titles too stiff. Went with P:T and Arcanum on GOG for handy digital versions.
  14. Yeah... a Kickstarter wouldn't come close to accomplishing that.. Obsidian could just start their own Falloutesque IP, but they seem to be more interested in magic for the time being..
  15. Sounds as much a gimmick as a game. A shame, as it's visually interesting, although a little too influenced by Bioshock Infinite.. New Vegas did open world about the best as can be asked, breathing life into a stilted sim world via factions and branched quests. The quests were just mediocre for the most part though - the drawback of having a large game that plays partially like a quest sim. I don't think it's really possible to be both great at open world and quality quests. Happens to me at times - feeling like part of the crew instead of the intended audience, but I just remember that it's all theatre so the effort of illusion is still appreciated.
  16. It was a good game but not one that screamed sequel, though seemingly it'll sell well enough to justify it in Ubi's eyes.
  17. Sandbox games aren't worth getting until huge price drops, and even then, some like Just Cause 3 feel like a rip off at $5. At that point, you have to decide if it's even worth your time to play, and in most cases, the answer is no.
  18. Hard for me to be that interested in so many sequels/similar games in the best of circumstances to begin with, nevermind possible gameplay changes for the worse. Wasn't trying to be a downer though, just pedestrian amusement.
  19. Oh yeah, we've got plenty of fantasy RPGs which try to mix things up in their world-building. I mean, it would be a shame if majority of them was 'your generic fantasy 101' or something, right? :-P It highly depends on what they do with it of course, but while this idea is not anything original or innovative at all, there's a lot you can do with it - and I'm still waiting for a game to use such a mix to its full potential. It just screams generic Elder Scrolls with a sprinkling of generic sci fi, but maybe it'll be good(for you).
  20. So, their typical fantasy setting, but this time they're shaking it up with jet packs and a few concrete structures. Ground breaking development.
  21. From the opinions expressed so far, I'm happy to report that's not the case. I think it's a good tribute to the game that even on forums where old school RPGs reign supreme, that the original perspective is wished to be kept.
  22. I wouldn't be opposed to an Arcanum style game in Unreal, but those settings can easily become generic and it's hard for me to get too excited over them. I'm still holding out some hope that Feargus is intentionally being dismissive of a WoD game, and they're secretly mad at work on it. If there's anything to the "put two and two together" statement, then wouldn't it have to be either post apocalyptic, Arcanum or WoD? Why else even make the statement, unless you're bad at choosing words..
  23. Good lord I'm glad they didn't do a WoD game in that pitiful NWN2 engine. But yeah, it doesn't seem like this unannounced title is WoD related. I don't care to play the speculation game, as there's nothing else that gets me excited like a Bloodlines sequel would. AP2 would be welcomed but it's not that either. Hopefully it's not some medieval fantasy, wasteland/post apoc or uber rainbow colored sci fi setting that's been done in the dirt.
  24. Agreed about keeping with the formula, which I'd assume they would, but I'd rather all efforts be poured into a sequel than a remake. The original still plays well even as far as visual aesthetics and I still prefer it's real world textures/facial animations/smaller, purposeful worlds to modern big scale worlds of glitz and glamour that lack the intimacy of Bloodlines. I'd expect a sequel to follow the footsteps of it's predecessor with whatever minor adjustments the designers see fit.
  25. I believe the poster gave examples of what he considers AAA - New Vegas and Alpha Protocol. No ambiguity required. I think everyone knows what it means, just those that pretend they don't.
