  1. I would think that timed missions would be bad for an RPG style game. Time limits are standard fair for action games, but might get frustrating when applied to a game where one's mind isn't gear to thinking in limited time increments. However, I like the idea of time as it relates to the next series of concequences. It could be applied, instead of a time limit do-or-die scenario, as a means to generated a series of encounters or events. Say you spend a little too much time lingering around the corpse pile...corpses attract critters...some critters are big nasty critters....As you're poking around, you're suddenly pounced on by a big hungry critter who decided he wanted his dinner still wriggling. This type of time-controlled event would fit quite well into the RPG style of play. In fact, it would closer resemble the PnP style of play, where the controller is constantly rolling for chance encounters.
  2. It isn't a fault, it's more of a curse, if you want to call it anything. Having been a classical musician myself, I can relate to what you are saying.
  3. No. I can't think of a bigger waste of my money right now. I'd get more satisfaction from burning my next paycheck than spending a small portion of it on a Michael Moore flick.
  4. It is time to crawl up to the next level. The only time I use my CD drive anymore is to store the play disc for whatever game I'm playing because the game won't recognize the DVD drive for copywrite purposes. Like was said numerous times...DVD is way faster. I can install a game in less than half the time on my DVD drive as the CD. Another bonus to DVD is not having to store (and subsequently misplace or lose) a stack of install CDs. I vote for giving us the option to buy the one we prefer. I'd choose DVD. How many people said they wouldn't upgrade their music collection to CD in the eighties? Most of the people I knew. How many still have 3 tons of vinyl and audio tape stacked up now? One...he collects them now. I agree with Hades...it's time for the software to keep up with the hardware.
  5. Yeah, I know, it was a veiled protest against Lucas changing that. The original had Han Solo shooting first, no question; Lucas added in Greedo shooting first with the special edition, a move for which he was nearly universally lampooned. It was pointless, lame, made Han Solo seem less clever and less of a scoundrel, and made absolutely no sense considering (as noted in this thread) Greedo was at point-blank range. I'm sure George would want us all to believe that the reason Greedo missed in the redux is because he abandoned all of his bounty hunter school training. Instead of slowly squeezing the trigger...sqeezing the trigger ...squeezing the trigger... until >>BLAM!!!<< ...the round fired, surprising him, he yanked the trigger like a goober in a gangsta rap video. Han noticed this error in Greedo's style and waited to return fire. He did not want to be seen as a monster by the local Smugglers' Tabernacle Choir members in the room. Bad form. No...Han is supposed to be an honest smuggler...a guy on the up and up. So, he waited, and after everyone had the opportunity to see that Greedo had fired first, he returned fire, killing Greedo and causing several patrons at the bar to soil themselves....no droids were hurt, however. Then George tackled the whole "Luke knew he kissed his sister all along" bit that he meant to do in the original ...due in the next release...
  6. The game gave no reference to the books or the comic series. As a self contained SW Universe type of thing, broader reference could've been made, had it been important to the story line of the game itself. Hence, if Revan turns out to be simply a background character, they would not to have wrapped so much around him/er to pull off the new story. I thought for sure Exar Kun (40 years previous to KOTRO1?) was referred to. I think Jolee Bindo may mention it and possibly Canderous Ordo. Not a big factor in the game though and it was provided only for background/flavor. Right, but given the detailed stories found in the Exar Kun stories, the mention of him is fairly slight in KoTOR and has little bearing on the game itself, if any. It seemed to me that it was more of a way to give a hint to the unknowing that there is much more to the SW Universe than 5.5 movies and a really bad Christmas special.

  8. in the LS and DS endings he appears in front of a large number of people. The entire galaxy...billions of creatures?
  9. I'd prefer to see a better variety when it comes to armor appearance. Too many looked too much alike.
  10. 2 is still better than one. 4 than 3...7 than 5...etc, ect, etc. They're such small snippets they could add dozens per character. And...How many takes did it take to get "Down you go"?
  11. Just an idea. I understand the reasons people wouldn't want it. It does leave little to the imagination for creating your own personality. I just thought that it might be a next progression type of thing. Maybe once games start coming out on DVD they might give it a try.
  12. Just an idea. Voice acting the player character would require a significant amount of resources on the part of casting the selection of voices, and the coding to make it work, but given that this is the sequel to one of the most popular GOTY, wouldn't something like this be needed to aid in putting it ahead of it's predecessor? Maybe select from a couple of male and a couple of female voices during character creation? I don't know of any game out that has tried to do this, but this game already lends itself well to the idea, what with all of the relevant dialogue voice-acted in the original.
  13. Maybe they could pay the voice actors an extra day's salary to record more than one one-liner for each character? Insert a script to randomize from a selection of inane battle cries? Maybe? I would love to hear a Mandelorean-esque character call out "Go for the eyes, Boo!"
  14. Oh...follow-up to scenario 2. Keep in mind that Revan was already thought to be dead to all but a few select characters. So having him "disappear" in KoTOR II would not be implausible at all...most people already thought he was dead long before the battle at the Star Forge.
  15. At first read of the question I thought, "A good old double-becket bend should tie the two ends together," but then I decided not to be a smart@ss. I would say that the tie-in will be done one of two ways, whether I think they are creative or not, I'm choosing to focus on what Obsidian will probably do vice what I think they should do. 1. In establishing your character, thus your identity in the initial "Endar Spire" type opening sequence, the game will read your choices and plant a standard history. This would be similar to TOEE, where you get a different opening depending on the base party alignment. This would require two sets of scripts, thus a lot of space. Since KoTOR already had lt/dk options in the dialogue choices, Obsidian can choose to filter the script to allow for only one or the other, with maybe some grey area dialogue mixed in. This would solve the space-on-disc issue for having two complete sets of dialogue files and corresponding voice files. 2. In KoTOR II, you receive only vague references to Revan. Only that he was defeated after the battle at the Star Forge. Dark Jedi, whether Revan turned good or evil in the first game, would still be hunting for him, for different reasons sure, but hunting none the less. The result was a cataclysmic civil war with more forces leaving the Republic for the greener pastures of the Sith. The Sith movement gains more momentum, next thing you know, you're the "last known Jedi." Revan would be as vague as Exar Kun (et-al) was vague in the first game. "Oh yeah...that Exar whats-his-name guy...a powerful Sith lord kind-of dude." would be in KoTOR II: "Revan? Oh year.. the last guy to run around fighting with the Republic? Yeah. Not sure what happened to him exactly. Heard the Dark Jedi got him..." I would be afraid that the more you nailed down the specifics in the beginning, the more linear the game would turn out to be. None of us know exactly which way Obsidian is taking this part of the story into the next game, but I would bet that they are going to keep it fairly neutral, as in #2 above.
  16. Thanks, all. The debates are what really give you an eye into what a game is really like. I ended up finding a demo for Morrowind. Not bad, I guess, but it seems to have too much of an MMORPG to me. It's like I was waiting for someone else to log onto the server.......but they never did. I might get it, though, and play with the plug-ins. Some of the write-ups on some of the fan sites seemed like they'd be pretty interesting.
  17. The name... I always feel like I'm one of the older people on these boards. Avatar? Obvious.
  18. I've only been pc gaming, really, for about 5 years now, and have come to prefer RPGs. Before that, I was a console palyer. Now I'm exclusively a pc gamer, and am finding I've missed some of the best titles of the past 10-12 years. I tend to get wrapped up in one game, and fail to hit all the games as they come out, or soon there after. However, when there is nothing new worth playing, thats when I have back tracked and gotten games like BG. One such game that has been calling me, but I have yet to acquire, is Elder Scrolls: Morrowind. (I'd also like to hear your opinions of the first two Elder Scrolls titles.) I trust that most of the people here are RPG fans to a degree. Is this game worth the time and money at this point? I've played just about every other fantasy RPG I can think of. I keep meaning to get Morrowind, but then somethig like KoTOR comes out, and I get wrapped up in it instead. Is all the hype surrounding Elder Scrolls legit? Would it be worth it to get it?
  19. President and CEO. But I note that said position is currently not available on the jobs page. So, I'd go with "Idea Guy". Actually, my programming skills are limited to db, but I can write a good story now and again, so Writer (be it plot, back story or dialogue), I guess, would be my serious answer.
  20. Serious question: I forget if this was asked before... Will we be able to have more flexibility to map keys? I wanted to make some adjustments that fit my playing style better, but key-mapping (or lack there of)would not allow it. I use a 5 button scroll trackball.

  22. To the mgnails syndicate. If you are easily offended and don't like to look at yourselves critically, do not read this post. This is not meant to be a flame, but yet another set of reasons why people feel the way they do about this whole grand mod thing. Thank you. I'm not sure what MG wants to do with the combat thing now. hmmmm whatever. Exactly what we want to know. Funny how he seems to think this thing is fairly far along, yet all of his associates who come here seem to be misinformed, or oblivious, as to what mgnails wants. Alot of people are working on this, and rather than alot of doubts we'd appecriate some enthusiasm if u don't mind. Keep in mind, the people on the holowan boards have been reading about this magical mystery mod since the beginning of the year. The initial enthusiasm is long gone. People want to start seeing something other than new web sites and forums every other month. It's kind of anoying to keep reading "it'll never get done" while ur working. Mods are made for the community, and the community should appreciate the efforts of those who try. Believe it or not, we are those communities. But lip service isn't enough. Alledged team members coming on board with "...I have no proof yet, but..." doesn't cut it. We work long and hard retexturing, modeling, writing, scripting, coding. If u have constructive comments and suggests about how we might better the mod then please post them, post ur ideas. Deconstructive comments about our imment failure however are not welcome. You don't have much of a choice. If you post and post and post about how wonderful and awesome something is, yet dodge the bullet every time someone wants to see it, you're going to get criticism. I've been working for a long time, and this is true of any endeavor. It's best that, if what you are doing is legit, you just let the critiques roll off...ie: grow a thicker skin. We do not work to be constantly told that it will fail, it will collapse, ur liars and cheats. Again...thicker skin. If you let your feelings and emotions control your life, and allow those comments to affect your thinking, you will not be as successful in life as your potential may show. U don't like the mod? fine, don't download it. What mod? OH! The one mgnails has alledgedly been working on since the beginning of the year. Big reason why I, personally, don't think this will ever get done unless someone new takes the helm... mgnails said himself that he can't code, retexture or work models. Yet he can do everything else. Take a close look at who you are working with here and read that statement again. Coding, textures and models are about 90% of a mod, are they not? The rest is story development, dialog and marketing. I will admit, mgnails can sure set up a web site and forum...and talk up a huge storm, but that is about all the work I've seen complete on this mod so far. We've posted screenies and still the onslaught of doubt comes. What do u want from us? a demo? we're not far enough along. The screen shots could have been done by anyone using a screen shot of the KoTOR 1 game and photoshop. Same with the armor reskins and lightsaber colors. There are many people who have the skills to do these simple tasks as evident on the KoTOR 1 mod sites. So, yes, until something truly original comes along, I think that most of us want to see a working model, at least, prefereably a demo, but a simple mpeg would be nice. We only started a month or so ago. According to my recollections, mgnails has been working on this for quite some time now. Whenever he posts about it, he speaks in near-completion terms...not planning-stage terms. "All we need now..." "We're almost..." "I just need....and I will be able to release..." Go back into the archives at holowan and read them. I'm not making this up. I've seen great mods with demos that take "YEARS" to create, and those were just the demo. We hope to get alot done in a few "MONTHS" major canges have not been as of yet completed. Therefor u would whine constantly unendingly about how little we had done. I'm not trying to offend u, I am trying to explain something. And so am I. I'm not trying to offend you, either. But be real. Many of the people here have frequented the holowan and bioware KoTOR forums. We've all read with enthusiasm mgnails claims and promises. We all waited. And in the end, all we got was one delay after another. One "I've decided to integrate the mod I've been workjing on into an even bigger one..." after another. No offense to you or any of the other relatively new team members, but the boy cried wolf one time too many...now we want to see some blood before we come running.
  23. Question: Dialogue Who gets to review the dialogue prior to final release? I am not a language arts teacher, but I did notice some errors in the text in KoTOR I. Not that it took away from the game play, but it did give me a feeling that someone A ) was either rushed to proof it and get it to the next stage, or B ) has a different interperetation of grammar and spelling than I.
