  1. Off the top of my head: Ever tried to chop wood with a knife (to build improvised shelter)? Its hard and it sucks. But its much harder with a small blade. But what blows even more is carrying a bulky machete or woods axe on the backpack. So a big knife is a good compromise. Ever tried to pry something open with a small blade? It sucks because little blades don't offer much leverage, they tend to slip and snap possibly injuring your arm and hand. Big knife wins hands down. Ever tried to use the handle of a small blade as a hammer? It sucks because it does neither have the mass (Inertia) nor the stability to be used as improvised hammer. Big knife wins. Ever tried to defend yourself with a small blade? The longer, bigger blade is more effective, gives you more range and looks more intimidating to scare off two legged predators. Big knife wins. Ever tried to dig with a knife? It sucks, but it beats digging with your hands or a stick and a big knife works way better than a small one. Damage. The bigger knife will endure more damage before it breaks. Also in an emergency you can make a spear using the blade of the knife as head, to hunt and to defend ourself. Big knife wins. I wouldn't call a knife/bayonet that has been designed for and used by a military force a ''show piece.'' Looks nice though. This.. is so dumb, I honestly don't know how to respond. But you keep on digging, chopping wood, prying things open, hammering, testing the durability (?!) and spearing with your.. knife. I'll keep on cutting with my normal sized knife. That reminds me of a funny story. This was like 20 years ago, I was getting my scuba tanks filled in a dive shop in Dania Beach FL. This real knucklehead was in front of me renting snorkeling gear with his kid. He bought this huge dive knife, the size of a old style bayonet. He told his son they needed it in case they had to fight off a shark. I really think he was being serious. I laughed out loud at the absurdity of that notion. In Florida it would be exceedingly unlikely to encounter a shark that could eat you, and far less likely to meet one that would be inclined to do so. And if you did that knife would do you no good. Just remembered that.
  2. You know, I don't think I'd have drafted Sam if I were the Rams. If he stinks as a pro they don't dare cut him. All anyone would focus on was them cutting the gay player. No one will want to hear that he just wasn't good enough. They better hope he's got the goods. The it will be a win-win.
  3. Coors light. It's like sex on a waterbed... f---ing near water!
  4. Today I was on a two hour conference call in which I dozed off for a good 5 minutes. I don't think I missed anything. If I did I'll just say I was in the can and hope they forget I was on my cell phone. Then I completed and e-mailed the data sheets for the carrier expansion for the Fayette Mall in Lexington. Fortunately I won't have to go back there. Then I spent two hours splitting firewood, weeding the garden, changing the oil in the tractor, and playing ball with Tommy my dog. Now I'm sitting in my favorite chair, watching the Rays - Mariners game, drinking a ice cold Coors Light and catching up with you fine folks! Pretty good day.
  5. Completely lazy today. Woke up at 8, fed the dog, skipped breakfast, fell asleep on the couch while reading a book. Woke up again at 12:30, turned the baseball game on the radio, sat on couch on the porch, fell asleep while listening to the game. I woke up at 3, Rays were behind 6-2, turned off the game and fell back asleep. I just woke up again and I feel f'ing great! I guess I needed that. Lady GD will be home from work soon, time to cook up some dinner and wait for Game of Thrones & Penny Dreadful to come on. It was a great day.
  6. The strongest drink I've had this week was black coffee. But I had lot of that. My current work project is finished. There is nothing pressing to do around the house, and the Rays are playing at 12 so the dry streak ends today!
  7. That's interesting, the voting turnout figures for this South African election is 58 %.... which isn't bad ? You know I was reading an article today that talked about how the "Born Free" generation, the first generation to have never lived under apartheid have little interest in politics and low participation in voting. It's ironic that after so much strife to win them the right to vote so many are not interested in using it. Of course, the same could be said here. Youth participation in voting has seldom been real high in the US.
  8. All of the sudden the Marlins are not looking so bad. I still hate Loria with a passion though. He's got to go. I'm also hoping Jeb Bush will buy the team. Not only will that give them a decent owner it will keep him out of politics. It's a win-win.
  9. Especially Tulo, he's having a career year so far.
  10. In the US election day is on a business day. Usually we get pretty good turnout on Presidential elections but in the off year or Mid Terms, when most governors are elected, only those who really follow politics show up to vote. That's why we end up with jackasses for Presidents and pretty competent folks for governors.
  11. The high priest of the black ant tribe prayed to Woldan to aid them against the heathen red ant invaders.... alas, Woldan did not heed their prayers!
  12. I'd just like to say how much I hate... HATE... HATE the Stihl M180c chainsaw. It is without the crappiest, most useless, unreliable, chewed up, spit out dried up piece of monkey poop that has ever been stuffed into a chainsaw case. It won't start, it floods the engine on the second crank unless you go to half throttle but it won't start from half throttle unless the engine is warm but it can't get warm because it won't start. And even if, by some chance, miracle, or divine intervention you actually do get it started the chain will lose tension after just five minutes of light use. Then when you try to shut it down to tension the chain you find out the damned thing that would not start, now won't shut off because the wretched little cheap misbegotten spring from the spring loaded shut down switch broke. And this miserable SOB was expensive. I could have had a mid model Husqvarna for the same price. Heck I'd have been better off with a box full of trained termites. If I did an Indian rain dance and prayed for lighting the strike the tree it would probably have gotten trimmed a lot faster. I hope the little twit at Ace Hardware in Millington who sold me this thing dies a slow and painful death and that he takes the engineers who designed it with him. /rant Hey guys, I've got a two year old Stihl chainsaw for sale, hardly ever used.PM me if interested.
  13. Pizza from the little pizza joint in Covington. You know how every town has that little hole in wall restaurant that doesn't look like much but has really good food? Well.... this wasn't one of those.
  14. Well, the NBA season is over for me. I have to say it has been an up and down ride. Mostly down the beginning of the season with Gasol out, mostly up the second half as they just out hustled their opponents to get to 50 wins (no small feat in this division). This offseason they need some offense. Especially an outside shooter. They are dead last in the league in 3P and near last in shooting percentage. That make is hard to keep up with teams like OKC. They could also stand an upgrade at small forward. Hmmm Lebron might be a free agent right? I'm thinking Rudy Gay might be more likely if he decides to leave Sacramento. Anyway, on to the next round as I move to the disinterested observer seats.
  15. An MLB game in May stressful? Seriously? I barely pay attention until August. Hay every game counts. That's why they keep score. Losses in April & May can easily make wins in August irrelevant.
  16. Watching Yanks & Rays. It's bottom of 13 with 2 outs & two on. Very stressful.
  17. Tale I've told you this before, switch to writing non-fiction. That will solve all your character problems!
  18. I'm making this for dinner tonight. Lady GD went shopping to I get to cook! http://www.tasteofhome.com/recipes/mexican-style-stuffed-peppers I'm also making char grilled corn on the cob. But first I'll warm up with a glass of fine single barrel small batch bourbon with two ice cubes. Or two.
  19. Woo Hoo, double header sweep of the "Sawx" for the first time in club history. Great games too, I watched them both. That might be just the thing the "reelin" Rays need to salvage this road trip. Now, on the New York!
  20. The Grizz lost a huge chance. Now game 7 on the road... ugh.
  21. That is no joke. One of the best benefits of being in good physical condition the mitigation of and quicker recovery from injuries.
  22. HA! He always was sort of an angry dude!
  23. That was f-----g OUTSTANDING! Go Grizz!
  24. On a non draft note I love the Bucs choice of Lovie Smith. After two extremes, Rahim Morris the nice guy with no discipline, and Greg Schiano the total a$$hole with no charisma, they final struck just the right balance. Now I hope they get some O-Line upgrades in the draft because it does not matter who the QB is if he spends the whole game on his back.
