Both the thief and car owner are black. I head the story on the news but I believe the driver's fingerprints are on the bag. However as I think about it the search was related to the car theft so there is no probable cause to search the car other than it being stolen. Meaning n probable cause insofar as the owner is concerned. However, TN has a "find law" meaning any illegal item found during a legal search is admissible against any potential defendant connected to the item. It is a horrifyingly broad law that is exactly the kind of blanket power governments love to give themselves.

So get this. This is making news here in Memphis. A guy gets his car stolen and reports it. The police recover the car and the thief. well they search the car and and found a half a gram of marijuana that they decide belong to the owner of the car. It probably did. So no the car owner has been arrested and is actually facing more time than the guy who stole the car. Government at work. All those goddamed democrats in Memphis clamoring for more government here is some more government for you.

I've read through part of this and still can't figure out if it's a hoax or not. It's hardly unheard to to write a completely bogus study that "sounds right" and appeals to certain biases just to see if it could get published. It is the exact thing you'd expect, pseudo-intellectual junk science that passes for legitimate studies. Anyone who has spent more than 5 minutes in the company of a dog knows that does not work. Hey, the are sweet, lovable, smart (in their way) but they are not humans. They can't learn to think like humans. But humans CAN learn to understand them. Of course the whole thing is not really about the dogs as it is about the human reaction to them. Which presumes dog owners don't really understand their furry friends. And for the most part I don't think that's true at all.

Yes. That is one thing. Why do I need a license to sell the exact, EXACT same vegetables the farmer's market does. Come to that why does HE need one? Why do the kids need a $129 license to sell lemonade for $ 0.75 a cup? Why does the guy outside the ballpark need one to sell cans of soda for $1? Why do I need a permit to replace a fence that ALREADY EXISTS on the property I supposedly own? Some things I can see. I understand why you need a permit to drill a well. There are good reasons for that. I understand my you need a permit to build a house, change the elevation of your property, etc. These things have effects that go beyond the borders of your property, But it has gone well beyond that. Now you need their permission to do every goddamned thing including landscaping in a lot of places. And that permission must be paid for. Which is of course the whole point. You might even call it a bribe. Or "tribute" to the "king." It amounts to the same thing. It's taking money to keep the police you showing up and shutting you down. The mafia does that kind of thing too. It's called protection. From them. And people think it's all done to keep them safe. Safe from what? Have you ever bought a sandwich from the roach coach? Or an ice cream cones from the ice cream truck? Did you die? Of course not. Do you expect that same quality from them as from Subway or DQ? Of course not.

My point being it should be OK to have more stringent requirements on larger professional business like retail grocery stores and restaurants at the same time as not making the poor guy selling cans sodas outside the ball park get the exact same kind of license. It's OK to not seize Tino's Pizza food truck and throw that poor guy in prison for a year because he can't pay the same fees as Pizza Hut has to. And I would hope people are smart enough to understand that if you buy a pizza from Pizza hut you are far less likely to get sick than if you et one from Tino BECAUSE of that. Caveat Emptor. I would HOPE people would understand that. Of course reading some of the posts on this thread gives me pause in that hope. Like I said it does not have to be all of one thing or another. You can have safe restaurants AND kids lemonade stands. Grocery stores AND community fresh markets. Well, actually no you can't any more. But if I decided to sell my vegetables from my home, it's illegal. This isn't a tax issue. Food is not taxed in TN. If the rain falls and irrigates my garden that is legal. If i collect that water in 50ga drums and use it to irrigate that same garden when it's not raining it is illegal. But since when did the government become our goddamned mother telling us who to buy from? Or who can sell? I just made enough watermelon wine this weekend to fill 30 16oz bottles. If I sell one of those bottles I'm looking at a $10k fine and one year in federal prison. That is government run amok.

I see the cops in Denver shut down some kids who were selling lemonade in a park last week. Well done City of Denver. Imagine, the audacity of a couple of kids wanting to sell $.75 cups of lemonade to people without getting on their knees and humbly begging the Crown for permission coupled with an abject offer of paying license and permit fees. Personally I'm really surprised the cops didn't beat the holy hell out of those children, shoot them dead on the ground, drop a "hot" pistol and their corpse then give themselves raises.
