  1. Ya I was being a bit snarky. It's just a difference of opinion. We all admit objective xp feels different than the original way where you got xp for everything, quests, kills, exploration. Some view it very positively where others feel it turned them into "must find and kill everything for xp". We are just different. I like it better. It is going to affect how a lot of people end up enjoying the game. I may be converted but I've played objective based RPGs before. Some good some meh. I can tell you all my absolute favorites though impliment the xp style of combat xp combined with other forms. Fallout 1 2, BG 1 2, Wow, Dragon Age, knights of the old republic i could go on.
  2. Again that's a personal tail you weave about how you became a murderous mad man. However I played those games, love kill xp, and actually RP'd my way through the game. I fought when it felt appropriate for the situation or my character. This argument that kill xp turns everything into a slaughter fest is stupid.
  3. Well I feel it has but OK here let's go. Basically what if I don't have a bard, now the strings are only really useful to sell so that trip was a bust because meh usually money is trivial. Now i did get some xp for exploration, but it would have been nice to add in some experience for all the effort to loot a cave where i came up bust.
  4. I can name a hundred RPGs that are classic iconic games where you do. Including all the games that inspired this one. Again it comes down to preference.
  5. The real problem i'm having with this whole discussion is the fact that both sides think they are right because they are. Myself and others gain a lot of enjoyment from combat and the idea of it crafting our character into a powerful warrior while others find that tedious. So I've just admitted you're right so lets drop all the attitude back and forth. But you guys need to understand the REASON this topic has been discussed a ton of times is that a lot of people feel this way on both sides. This will affect a large portion of the audiences feelings about this game and may turn us away as it would you in the reverse. We aren't wrong and neither are you. Pepsi or Coke.
  6. I will say this though, if when the game comes out, it blows me away and I'm totally converted I will come back and publicly apologize for not being a believer.
  7. Just my opinion and I could be wrong but if the combat is too challenging with no reward other than an internal pat on the back, and the fact that this game seems to be, at least in part, heavily combat focused, I see people taking the path of least resistance. The will play the game once through to see the story and that's about it.
  8. I looked around some more and found another video where he looked competent.
  9. So I didn't see the stream live the other day but I watched 20 mins of a demo where the programmer was showing us an Ogre quest and I thought it seemed pretty bad. He couldn't even get to the quest. He just got slaughtered by beetles. They even stated they were playing it on easy. I'm all for challenging combat but that seems ridiculous. Does that programmer just really stink at video games? Was he out lvled significantly? Was that really easy difficulty? Was his gear Horrible? I dont remember IE games being that challenging for filler combat. I would post the link but I'm on my phone and can't figure out how to share it since YouTube is in mobile mode but if you just punch in Pillars of eternity gamescon footage it is the first choice.
  10. That's a wild generalization. I've never felt that need and i would bet there are many who feel the same. How could you possibly know how most people approach RPG. Not only that, but the games aren't designed in a way where killing every last creature is even necessary. I have played a lot of RPGs, if you do the quests laid before you, you will reach the appropriate lvl without having to kill every creature. Otherwise the game is a design disaster. Some people like padding stats and some people who aren't very good, need the ability to out lvl some content they aren't able to beat. My father is a miserable gamer. He can't beat anything unless he has out lvled it significantly.
  11. Well it's a mute point. All I can say is I enjoy kill xp. I'm not blood thirsty, i don't kill every NPC or enemy, I don't always choose combat options, I freaking RP. Some how I've managed to complete every IE game and countless others that do provide kill xp without ever, ever, feeling I could not progress or gain enough lvls unless I went on a slaughter fest. I don't know how it was possible before but now is so burdensome.
  12. Harrumph harrumph harrumph!
  13. In a game like this I won't key bind anything. I'll just pause. Don't see any need since there is no real rush.
  14. I agree completely. I can accept this game won't have xp for combat but the argument against it isn't sound. I honestly think it comes down to difficulty to balance and since there is limited time and money I can uunderstand that.
  15. Whichever class wears heavy armor and swings big weapons the best will be my class! Race is irrelevant! I will smash my enemies no matter what.
  16. This game was specifically designed to look and feel like an infinity engine game right? If I'm wrong about this i will recant but this is what the backers paid for. So well done. It looks close to perfect.
  17. I don't mind puzzles to a point. I don't play RPG's to slog through complicated puzzles that require hours thought, nor do Iike busy work of simple pointless puzzles. So if they strike a good balance and my progression isn't blocked by some crazy elaborate problem, I'll be fine.
  18. I don't want to believe it. What a sweet man. *sigh*
  19. The reason a lot of games go for a more cartoonish look ala WoW, Diablo3, Swtor, Wild Star is because those games don't look out dated as quickly as the hyper real games.
  20. I like to build the strongest as well, but don't think that a little halfling is going to be as strong a warrior as an orc or vise versa as a rogue. Doesn't mean I can't make a strong hafling warrior, but min max wise at top lvls he won't perform as well as an orc.
  21. I still like to try to build a strong chracter though, these kind of creating a character that feels more powerfull than the average character is part of the fun of an rpg with a complex character system like PoE. At least for me it is. Well there is a difference between making a strong character and min maxing. Min maxing is only really important at the most elite lvls of game play in PvP or Raiding. Raiding is really even less other than certain teams may not take you if your not perfectly built. It is the mathematical best a class can perform. It isn't necessary in a game like this.
  22. Well however they end up if they can only shapeshift once per day I don't think I will play as one. Turning into animals and gaining their strength is my favorite type/way they are sometimes portrayed. I would have liked nothing more than spending most of this game fighting as a giant bear.
  23. I enjoy xp from slaying monsters Balancing issues aside, which seems far less critical since this is single player. We are talking role playing. The more I fight the more skill and expertise I gain through combat. Seems very RP to me. It only encourages killing things if there is no alternative. Now money and time are a factor so I'm not really upset by the choice but kill xp is not an outdated concept. Personal feelings, whatever the motivation, is what people have against it. The concept is sound.
  24. If it is written well I feel there is always room for humor, even in the most serious of circumstance. In point of fact it would seem less real to me if humor was completely left out so I suspect that there will be some. Either through a smart Alec companion or through character dialog.
