Designer Rambling 2: The Lightsaber
nightcleaver replied to Chris Avellone's topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
I don't personally think a lack of lightsaber will destroy the balance of the game, as lightsabers pretty heavily tilt the balance in a jedi's favor anyway. The only real difference between a lightsaber and a vibroblade is damage and the ability to deflect projectiles, yes? Of course, I could understand you not liking the idea of being a jedi with no lightsaber, but I don't see how it unbalances the game. Especially when, well... we haven't played it yet. slightly off topic - Drakron's being WAY more negative than hades ever has been, and his comments aren't nearly so humorous as hades' are. The things he dislikes about the game have nothing to do with why you like it, obviously, so get over it already... people seem to have taken to chastizing hades as a regular ritual these past months, and they always seem to say the same things every time (If I remember correctly, it usually goes something like, "You always say the same things, hades!! Stop it! You don't mean it!"). Hades' comments, on the other hand, are ironically quite varied, even if the tone always stays the same. Not meaning to be offensive here, just making a point... -
While they said, "Last of the jedi", they went through quite an effort to make sure it was clear that you were only necessarily the, "last of the known jedi at the time", which effectively puts you as the last jedi, because what can a jedi in hiding do to help you? Is a jedi that's thought to be dead going to be hunted?

Actually, cops are told to incapacitate if at all possible, and only when they or another is in direct danger from the person are they allowed to use excessive force. In practice, this isn't completely enforceable, but the Force in Star Wars never turns it's eye, so to speak. In star wars, Good and Evil is determined by the Force and perhaps, to a lesser extent, law and the Council, but in real life it's law and the individual's choice.

I think, perhaps, the Jedi code is as "strict" as it is partly for the benefit of newbie apprentices and Padawans and such who don't really understand the nature of the force and the nature of themselves fully. I can imagine the master's inflict these same rules on themselves to maintain an example, for the most part, except for a few "rogue" jedi that recognize there isn't any need to be quite so strict. To a certain degree, you certainly have to watch those emotions to not do evil in real life, but only if you don't know what to watch for would you need to even consider suppressing such emotions to avoid "becoming evil," which is easier to do with the Dark Side looming in the Star Wars universe. Real life religions, on a basic level, seem to say some very similar things to what the Jedi Code says, and yet certain "priests" ( or whatever else) recognize a need for their own "code" to not be so strict. There are practical and impractical reasons, I think, for the Jedi Order to be so strict. The most practical reason is that ambiguous rules are not easily understood, and to say, "no love" is a very direct, simple rule that allows little room for deviation from the ideals of the Jedi Order. People tend to stretch rules a little bit, too, so that's another point in their defense. Frankly, there is no right answer for the Jedi Order as a whole, and I think they took the better path in the largest sense to be this strict. People will rebel when necessary anyway, for better or for worse. It's best that people feel that it's their choice to follow the Council's wishes, but how would the COUNCIL make that clear? Maybe have covert Jedi to tell the youngster's what their choice is? Perhaps it should be made clear to them, that, if they do fall in love, they don't have to come to the council for punishment, but they do need to deal with it - something along the lines of contraception being used because of the mass spreading of STD's. There's a reason Yoda told Luke to face his father without telling him to do anything, except to give the incentive that this was his test (I think?). I think so, anyway - and wasn't he a member of the Council? Maybe he learned his lesson. This really applies to the case of Bastila Shan in KotOR I, I think, though I won't go into detail here.

Going back and playing KOTOR 1
nightcleaver replied to Tyrell's topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
If I hadn't lost one of the CD's, I'd be playing it right now Oh well... -
I didn't want to wade through a huge debate about the nature of lightside/darkside that seemed somewhat close to a flame war, and pages upon pages of it. I knew that Battle Meditation is a new force power, in fact, that's what I'm somewhat suggesting Obsidian has already done to "balance" the lightside and the darkside. I've paid dues quite enough for a lifetime, I think, in reading way more forum posts than I really need to and have time to read without actually getting anything out of it. I resent that you suggest I'm in total ignorance of the topic, but I'll put that aside...
-
I don't really feel like wading through this miscellaneous stuff, so sue me - I'll just offer my idea and leave. Something interesting I noticed from a link elsewhere in the forms, that seems to be the key to the reasons lightsiders fight and suggests their mentality when they do so: "Jedi see the bisection of a living opponent's body a form of butchery and try to avoid this. They use this extreme form mostly on battle droids. Sai tok represents a Sith-like desire to destroy the enemy. The goal of a Jedi in battle is an inner focus on defeating the danger of the opponent, rather than wishing destruction upon them." Taken from: http://jediarchives.bejedi.com/index.php?c=fighting_styles bottom of the page. So, technically, Obsidian COULD add offensive lightside powers - they would just be focused on incapacitating rather than killing. Things that weaken and/or damage stats, the power of the enemy combatants, or affects their minds in ways that makes them less inclined or capable to fight you. Endless combinations: Damage reduction, stat reduction, even the ripping of Force ability for a time from their body, draining their FP. Something interesting to make note of is that form 7 is dangerously close to being darkside, as are a couple of others, but lightside jedi still use them without falling. Does that mean powers such as Force Choke, when used in moderation, are perfectly acceptable as lightside powers? Luke does it at one point... Anyone see what I'm saying, or is this just a stupid idea? Has someone suggested this already?

Much Ado About Lightsaber Forms
nightcleaver replied to yukisawa's topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
**mn him! Aside from him trying to make us drink... I thought I heard that you would actually learn the stances throughout the game as special rewards, possibly, or just by finding the right people at the right time. I hope it's like that, because that would be really neat - although it could potentially make it very difficult to have and try out all the forms -
Some game dialog screens
nightcleaver replied to Carth Vader's topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
6, actually, although the default non-stance could be considered another one to make seven... although they could've included that in the six. Whatever. -
I think they meant the game would be barely a little bit harder, and not necessarily the enemies.

Yes, precisely. I never said anyone was lying, although I did question their word of mouth. I wonder why that's wrong... Wow. you guys need to calm down. -

I didn't say it was a lie. Do a search of my post, if that's what it requires. Jesus. She still hasn't said what gaming company she works for. No one else has come forth with an OXM. I will doubt her word, healthily, unlike what everyone else is doing, until I see something confirming her word on any of this. Just wanted to point out that her word isn't absolute truth, despite what everyone wants to think. If she was just being irresponsible and... unintelligently persistent about the release date, she needs to not do that. -

Who's flaming? Let's face it. You don't have anything to back up what you've said. You should be more responsible than that, if you're not making stuff up. I only attacked your credibility. -
But.. OH, WAIT! What's this? Huh? At the official LA site it says Dec 6. What are you talking about? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I thought it was quite a well known fact that it had been put back...I've just checked no less than 5 online retailers and they all say Feb-March for the UK, same for the US. I'm also a games buyer for a certain retail website and the pre-release info I recieve says the same thing...not till early next year folks. Looks like the official website is in dire need of updating! <{POST_SNAPBACK}> March of next year. On X-box at least. Feb-march for the UK, same for US. I'm also a buyer, but you don't say who you buy for. Moral of the lesson: Before you go up against what everyone "knows" as "fact", back up your own facts a little better.
-
OK, I see what happened. I guess you missed what everyone else heard that the european versions were delayed with the PC versions? Yeah, well... that's why people were saying, "But they said the US x-box version was coming out in december", and you ignored it because you thought you knew that much about it. That certainly doesn't add to the credibility of anything you say, but at least you're not all that bad intentioned.
-
What is your job exactly? Who do work for? The friggin' CIA? I mean, seriously. You don't even say who you're working for - is there something your business has against naming themselves? LucasArts confirmed a while ago that they could safely provide a release date for december on x-box. They haven't changed the site. But your word is better than theirs. Sorry, but I think LucasArt's credentials stand better to the light of day than yours, at least so far.

In the case that Velocitygirl's not a hoax, well... Vader could only dream of? Hmm... I seem to recall that the whole galaxy was actually CONTROLLEd by the sith empire in the original series. Am I wrong? Wait, wait... did the Sith in the prequels have a Star Forge to build ships from? ... but something's fishy. One person: Read that, ONE person comes in and says that the release date has been pushed back to february/march for XBox. Then "she" starts a whole topic about something OXM allegedly said. Has anyone read OXM yet? Is it even out? Did it register on anyone that "she" has only 16 posts so far, and that she joined TODAY, just to tell us these two things? Find something more solid than your own word of mouth, velocity. Because that ****'s not flyin'. -
KOTOR II: Lightsabers at IGN
nightcleaver replied to funcroc's topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
It sounds to me like part of the strategy of fighting in TSL will be using the different forms. I would even say pretty confidently that that particular sentence is pretty direct in stating that you'll have to use the forms strategically, meaning you won't just go around with one form all the time like they did in the movies. I'll do form III mostly, if it's a choice. It's very authentically Jedi, I think, in the way I would play one. Maybe form VII or II. -

actually, the release date is still 12/04 for Xbox. Not 12/4/04. See the difference? And: Notice that little bit about the release date? -

I disagree. I think they look very different. The Handmaiden has a very roundish face, whereas "Atris" has a more narrow and angular face. The handmaiden also looks like she could be a bit older. The skin and hair color, even eye color, is almost exactly the same, but I just think the facial structure is too different...

PRIMA Strategy Guide for KotOR2
nightcleaver replied to SmkJaguar's topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
Have you seen the recent article on IGN about lightsaber's? Add that to the extra feats and force powers - it really looks like this game is going to be far more strategically in-depth than the first one. It looks like a great collector's item. -
